what do you do when your dog has a blockage?

so last night. my dog threw up twice and couldn't hold down her food

i figured she'd either eaten something and she'd picked up a germ -- or had a blockage of some sort

this morning she shat{sic?} a big green piece of plastic she must have picked up somewhere. she had a blockage!!!

i'm wondering if there's something i can do in the future to help her with pasing this crap along. pun not intended.

I would recommend speaking with your vet about this. Blockages can be pretty scary sometimes and often require exploratory surgery to see what is going on. This surgery is painful for the animal and expensive for you. You don't have a lab do you? They are notorius for eating things. I assisted a veterinarian once while she removed a diaper from the stomach of a lab. It was very painful for the dog; she almost died from it.

she's not a lab. she's a pit mix
she's always had this habit of picking up random pieces of plastic and swallowing them whole. like a shark. with fur.

the blockage is out. there was a little bit of blood which i'm keeping an eye on
if i notice any discomfort i'll bring her in to the vet
which scares the living beejezers outta me!

figure this'll cost a pretty penny just to make sure her gut is in good shape.
probably around a grand i'd say??

If you notice your dog is having discomfort, definitely take her to the vet for an exam and a series of x-rays. This will probably cost you a couple of hundred dollars unfortunately ... NY vets are expensive.

she's not having any discomfort now
just sleeping and snoring.

i worry mostly for the next time she decides to scarf up garbage
she's 6.5 now. when she gets older. stuff like this won't pass through her as easily

don't ever try to pull it out of her butt. You can really mess her up doing that. If there's something that is still in there and hanging out, like a garbage bag, just keep trimming it close to her butthole rather than trying to pull it out.

same thing. I learned this when our childhood cat ate tinsel. Tinsel can wrap around the intestines and if you pull it (or something else stuck in there) you can slice your pet open (like a papercut). Ouch!

Q, i'd agree with what everyone else said here. if Kika got into something and was vomiting for more than a day and not pooping, then the safest course of action would be to take her into the vet's for an Xray. that'll cost you around $100 bucks (maybe a little more). if there is a foreign body and it's small and smooth-shaped, there are things the vet could give her to help her pass the item (not $$$) . if it's too big, or jagged, then surgery is the only truly safe option (very $$$). and folks, Flexi is right about tugging on items to...er... dislodge them. can cause more harm than good,, though i've got this hilarious story about a rottweiler who liked to chew on barbie dolls, swallowed a head, then passed it. head came out but some hair was stuck. dog ran around the backyard like a demon was chasing it! little barbie head smacking the poor giant dog in the behind the whole time it was running around. that was a situation where a slight tug was a good thing, or the dog was gonna have a heart attack!

glad your girl is better, Q. watch for blood. watch to see if her appetite changes or she becomes lethargic (more than ususal, HAHA). just feed her some boiled rice and/or canned food (no kibble!) for the next 2 days. if she doesn't seem right, take her in.

I wonder if the rottie/barbie incident scared the kids from ever playing with barbie again!?

(on a side note, my friend's toddler nephew was crawling on the floor in front of a bunch of company once when they noticed a string out of his ass. He had put a tampon up his butt and told everybody that he "had his period just like mommy". ay yi yi).

my old cat had a bad bad blockage once.. found out it was the start of renal failure, actually.

Go to the vet anyway, even if he's feeling better.

took her jogging this morning
we saw shiskbab even!

while running she had to poo
and her poop was the most amazing poop ever!
firm and moist and just the right shade of brown
and..... no blood O:)
i was so overjoyed i almost cried

only a fellow dog owner could empathize with my joy
