Framed in Brooklyn — Brooklynian

Framed in Brooklyn

I'm looking for recommendations for a frame shop in PH or beyond. The pictures are fairly valuable, so I want someone experienced, professional, and careful (and, hopefully, not too expensive).

I have a rec in Manhattan, but was hoping to find something closer to home.

  • I have had excellent results from NuNu Gallery on Union in Park Slope.

    http://www.nunugallerie.com/

They're not cheap, but they have a good selection, are friendly and helpful, and do a very good professional job with both framing and matting. They also pack the finished product nicely for a safe trip home.

I don't know if this a a regular thing for them, but when I brought my first picture there to be framed, they gave me a coupon for $50 off my next one. So if you have 2 things, I'd recommend you bring the first one separately so if you get the coupon, you can use it toward the second one.

**I have no financial or other interest in NuNu Gallery**
  • I second Nunu. Expensive but they do a FANTASTIC JOB!
  • This is going to be vauge, as I can't really remember the names of the places, but here goes. There is a framing store on 5th, near Berkeley, that has very nice prints in their windows - they cover two store fronts. I think they're called Brooklyn Frame Works. They are way overpriced. There is another store on 7th, also near Berkeley, whose name I also cannot remember. It's a very narrow store. I brought a large print, about 36x24, to both stores, and asked for a lower-end frame with matting and a glass front. Brooklyn Frame Works was over 100$ more, for what was essentially the same thing. Not being a framing expert, there may have been some difference in quality between the two frames I was offered, but they looked to be about the same to me. The store on 7th Ave was much more helpful and friendly. The presumed owner at Brooklyn Frame Works didn't really listen to what I was asking for - an inexpensive frame - but instead kept showing me frames that were well above average price, and left it for me to dig out the cheaper ones (which weren't priced directly on the item).
  • There's a good one on 7th btwn 11th and 12th that I've used. They did a really nice job on an antique poster that I had framed.

They have a large selection of frame samples, all marked with prices, and they will let you get back behind the counter and go through them yourself if you like.
  • The framer on Fifth Ave near Berkeley does quality work but the owner/operator is cranky and can make any transaction needlessly irritating. There used to be a woman who worked there who was great . . . but if it's a short guy in the store, run away!

The place on Union at 7th mounted an old map on to foam core for me . . . very reasonable $ and nice to deal with . . .
  • I've really like the guys behind the Pool/Air Hockey on Flatbush, they are on 7th.

    That's NuNu.

The place behind the Pool/Air Hockey place seems to be closed a lot during normal business hours. I had tried to check that place out before going to NuNu, but was never able to catch them open.
  • Pat, one of the bartenders at The Gate, just opened up his own shop on like 3rd Avenue and President. He does a great job (he framed a poster for a friend of mine as a gift, so I dunno how expensive he is), and a friendly guy to boot...

Yeah, that place is called San Art. They do a good job and are cheap, but they take a long time, usually. They're sort of like dry-cleaners--if you don't say you NEED it right away, they'll take a really long time. The last things I had done there probably took four weeks--but at least they're upfront about it.

True, they are slooow but they tell you ahead of time. I found a Chales Fazzino at the Salvation army store, it was all f-'d up and the frame was banged up and the 3-d print had fallen off center, so you could'nt see the artist signature. Anyway they fixed it up nice for me and even cleaned up parts I didnt even ask for. They are great, but slow.
  • Subject: frames

We use Yale at 770 5th Avenue which is near Greenwood Cemetary. It is a large commercial framing business with good prices. Note it is owned by religious jews so no Saturday hours, nor are they open evenings.
  • If you're willing to venture to Cobble Hill, I really love Make-A-Frame on Atlantic (just past Court, across the street from Sahadi's). The guys there are really nice, have great, creative framing ideas and are always willing to work within budget constraints. We won't go anywhere else now. Reasonable prices too.
  • I've gone to Prints Charming several times and have never been disappointed. They're a bit pricy but you get a wonderful finished product and they're really good at helping you find an appropriate frame and matte. They're on Sterling b/w Flatbush and 7th inside a b-stone.
  • The Flatbush and 7th place is pretty good. I've had four things framed by them. Though one of the people there is a little snotty (the guy who looks like he just dying to start a conversation with "I was listening to Fresh Air, and I believe that the UN Commerce Secretary blah blah blah"). He seemed to think that the photos I was framing had little if any artistic value.

If you are looking for a simple job, try ordering the stuff online. Framesbymail.com seems to have excellent prices, you'll probably spend 2/3 less than you would getting your item framed here in the city.
  • I would second (or third?) Prints Charming; I'm a photographer and had all the prints for my last show framed there. I thought they were professional, quick and friendly. It's the only time I've used them but based on that experience I would go back.

The other place in the hood that I looked at was NuNu and I had a less-than-awesome experience when I went there for estimates. I think, though, that was probably just a fluke as I've heard good things about them too.
