This Friday: Raul's African-Hungarian jazz in PHeights
Subject: This Friday: Raul's African-Hungarian jazz in PHeights
Brooklyn, Budapest & Conakry: three cities with 2-3 million people that dominate their larger political units (New York City, Hungary and Guinea). Each is known for greasy, heavy food and is surrounded by unswimmable waters.But... there's a musical groove that connects them all, and that will be examined in detail this Friday at 8. Here at the convergence of Underhill, Washington, fashion, art, European folk rhythms and ancient African melodies, you can have your fill of Guinness and you don't even have to leave Prospect Heights. How great is that?
This is a rare performance of Dallam-Dougou, my African-Hungarian jazz band. The group features me on cello and nyenyeru (an African fiddle), Famoro Dioubate on the balafon (a West African xylophone), Sylvain Leroux on European and West African flutes, Avram Fefer on Reeds and Tzafrir Lichtenshtein on drums. We're playing for the first time with a hotshot fiddle player named Jacob Shulman-Ment. Special guests include Missia Saran "The African Tina Turner" Diabate on vocals, and Tim Abdullah Fuson on gimbre (parenthetical note deleted for the sake of brevity).
So y'all gots to represent. Here are the details:

They serve Red Stripe and Guiness, but if you're really into African music, you have to drink Guiness. It's not really an option.
Howdy, Stranger!
