Subject: yoga classes
Try the Slope Health & Fitness on the corner of Union & 7th Avenue. They seem to have a lot of instructors, and now you can buy just to take classes without having to join to use the entire gym. -
there is already a similar post on this board
try Jaya yoga on 8th ave, windsor place (street after 16th st.)
Great place!! and very unpretentious, warm and inviting. -

Subject: Yoga/Pilates in The Slope
Does anyone have any suggestions on yoga and Pilates fitness training in Park Slope which offers yoga and/or Pilates early morning (7-8am) or late in the evening (8-9pm)? Thank you! -
I would like to second this question. AND if there are any Yoga studios on this site take notice. I would love to do yoga before I work.

It appears my assumption was correct and there are no yoga/Pilates classes offered early morning/late evening in The Slope. If you'd like to have early morning/late evening classes, please respond to this posting. I'll keep a list and try to "pitch" it to local yoga/Pilates venue to see if we can pursuad them to create a few classes. Here's to keeping people healthy and Zen in the Slope (so we can continue to circulate our favorite bars.)

I have the fall class schedule for the Slope Health & Fitness in my hand. On Mondays at 7 a.m. they have Vinyasa Yoga. On fridays at 7 a.m. they have Hatha yoga. On wednesday morning at 7 a.m. they have pilates.
In the evening on monday at 8:30 p.m. they have pilates, tuesday at 8 p.m. they have hatha yoga, wednesday at 8:30 p.m. they have Capeo Yoga, Thursday ay 8 p.m. thay have Iyengar Yoga.
I don't understand why people post things without checking out the facts first. -
I still think you should try the Slope Health & Fitness hey have some great Yoga and Pilates classes.

Body Reserve has Pilates classes on Tue and Thur from 7-8pm, with Susan, who is a wonderful teacher.

Thank you for the postings. They're very helpful.
Garfield Girl, what's up the frustration and hostility? I have researched yoga/pilates classes in the slope several times. Your suggestion (Slope Health & Fitness) is the only venue in the area which offers consistant early morning classes. It's all good.
Again, thanks to all for the input. Very helpful. -
Most people who are serious about yoga aren't interested in taking yoga at a gym.

I disagree. I've been doing yoga for 10 years. I have seen a variety of styles, methods and locations. Gym yoga gets a bad rap because many times gym managers try adding yoga because it's popular without knowing how to test or recruit a decent yoga teacher.
However, I have been to a few gyms where the yoga teachers there also (or have before) teach at studios where they have been thoroughly trained. Some train in gyms because of convenience, location or pay. Several have been BETTER than teachers I have had in pure yoga studios.
I also know of at least one local yoga studio where I don't value the credentials or the teaching methods of the owner/main teacher.
It's all a matter of trial and error until you find a class, a teacher and a space you like. -
You're right Flexi, I was more annoyed by the constant promotion of Slope Health & Fitness. I would agree that in New York City, there are many qualified yoga teachers working in gyms. One of the best teachers I ever had primarily teaches in gyms at this point. And going to a studio absolutely does not guarantee you'll get a good teacher, though I think in general, your chances are better. Certainly in a studio, you're not likely to get a teacher whose only yoga experience is a weekend "Yoga Butt" certification.
A gym doesn't seem like a pleasant environment for practicing yoga, but I haven't tried it (gym yoga classes) so I don't really know. -
There are times that I prefer going to the gym to do yoga because I can also do cardio before/after, I can shower and I can use the rest of the facilities.
Two of my favorite teachers teach at studios and also at gyms.
Yoga studios usually have the advantage of better rooms (heat, flooring, etc.), props and are usually more quiet.
