Help! (landlord/rent payment issues)

so what happened?

Sounds like you need a new bank more than anything, to be honest - forget about the landlord's conduct and your bank still seem to have acted very inadequately.

Honestly it sounds like they're trying to force you out so they can charge more. Seems real sketchy - especially if you've been a good tennat thus far. This is what happens - landlords think tennants are idiots and thnk you won't bother trying to call their bluff and without anything you do to legally disprove them, they can say you faulted on your lease agreement and force you out after your lease is up in 6 months.
For a building with less than 8 apartments in it, the landlords can do whatever they want with regard to rental increases adn lease agreements on that front. Anything OVER 8 apartments and they hvae to follow a set of standards - again - sounds like they're trying to pull one over on you. I'd say def. make notification and copies of EVERYTHING you do in this issue in case they do get you out and for whatever reason dont' recive your security back (then you have paperwork to throw at them). Also - try calling 311 (or your lawyer if you have one).
My landlord is an ass and never fixes stuff i ask him to but i chose not to make a scene since i live with other roommates and we get a good deal on our place. I want to stay here as long as possible... and i can't afford the place on my own. -
i love my apartment in fort greene i live in the armory towers and my boyfriend and i pay $1857 the first year and its going up to 2200 in 6 months.. its a big apartment and very much but not in the best part of the town but everyone is super nice

Have a friend dressed in a suit come over and pose as your lawyer or something. Make them sign a receipt that they have received the checks from you and maybe call your bank while they're there to confirm all of those details again. Ask them to cash the checks on the next day and call you right afterwards to tell you what happened. If they dick you around like they did you have to cover yourself once and for all because you don't want to go through this situation every month. Maybe a more "official" approach will teach them...

Update: so I handed them a check and it cleared just fine and they never were able to provide proof that any of my checks ever bounced at all.
