donna's were fried in lard, with lotsa salt. and a bit of ash. yeah, indoor smoking, people. power to the .... cooks. -
i actually ate real shredded hash browns at Eatery in Manhattan, on 9th ave at 53rd st. they came with the "E-Benne", the eggs Benedict, as what is traditionally the english muffin. it was called a 'potato cake' i think, but there they were, delicious, perfectly crispy, shredded potato.
And covered with a poached egg and a chili hollandaise.
yumyum! -
I want that!

That's similar to what Beast does, but with home fries instead of hash browns, of course... it's very good.

My employer's cafeteria service both home fries and hash browns during breakfast. Unfortunately, said cafeteria's off limits unless you're either an employee or a visitor.

Y'all don't know from hash browns unless you've been to the Waffle House.
Scattered, smothered, covered, chunked, topped, diced.
It's all good, and I never say "it's all good". -
Subject: New College Hash Browns
New College (4th and Union) usually has hash browns (or at least they used to?).... -
applewood - miraculous grits, in particular
stone park - food look normal, but tastes exquisite!
dizzy's - good hearty stuff
12th St B&G - fine food
...and the new N'Orleans place on 7th seems to have a promising brunch menu... anyone try that yet? -

Oh, we do! I luurrrv tater tots.
This is off-thread, but  it's a thread I started, ...and I'll get fried (no pun intended) for liking this place, and you all probably know this already, but Trash on Grand in Williamsburg gives you free (FREE!) tater tots, all you can eat. All you have to do is ask. I am not making this up. ...It's an aptly named hipster rock club with a dive vibe, and it's absolutely littered with the hoody-and-Chuck-Taylor crowd, (not that I mind that crowd, personally) ...but, holy crap, free tater tots!
:!: I repeat, holy crap, free tater tots. :!:
Back to business: I appreciate the suggestions and the vigorous, and somehow scholarly, potato discussion, but I have to say that Bar Toto (Sixth and 12th) deserves at least an honorable mention in the brunch half of this thread. It may be too far south for some of you, but it offers a semi-creative bistro menu (eggs, panninis, pastas), friendly and competent service, and good stiff drinks. That is, as we say back home, the titty milk.
Also not shabby are Magnolia (Sixth and 13th) and Cafe Steinhoff (Seventh and 14th). -
My bf and I went to Magnolia for brunch once. The food wasn't very good, the bloody mary tasted weird, and neither of us cared for the atmosphere (I felt like I was back in Michigan for some indefinable reason). We won't be going back.

Have never had brunch at Magnolia but have been there for dinner many, many times and loved it. I like the atmosphere, though, it is a bit dark. Maybe that is more conducive to dinner time?
