FreshDirect... what the heck happened?!

Anyone else noticing that more and more their deliveries are being thrown around? The last 3 times I have ordered from them I've had things broken open en route. Its starting to feel like its not worth it anymore... their prices aren't all that great anyway. Anyone else noticing its getting really crappy lately?

Or maybe they just throw my boxes around alot.

are you ordering during the same delivery window each time? you may want to try a different one. the same dudes tend to work during the same shifts, so if you're noticing crap service during a certain shift, it might be worth it to switch. I did that - I used to get stuff during the early morning Saturday shift and switched to a later morning one because of too many missing boxes. (generally the ones that were labeled "heavy" and contained either beer or wine)
  • This is good advice... I finally found a delivery window I'm happy with. I was tired of exploded yogurt all over my stuff.

Though, I've had issues lately w/ items missing from my orders (the past 3 orders have been incomplete). They always refund my money, but it's annoying when it's something I need like milk or my wine.
  • Yeah, I totally vary, since I work from home. And all the boxes get here, but usually with a few busted eggs, yogurt ooozing all over the insides of the boxes and the fruit... tasteless and either very underripe or just about to be overripe. The list of things I won't order from them is getting longer and longer...

no eggs, no milk, no yogurt, no produce... i'm down to detergent and cat litter which they can throw around to their hearts content.

i really want to like them. but i just don't anymore.
  • i've never ever had that problem..

:( I've found the saturday 11-1 delivery to be ok. but I tend to order a lot of bulky, non-explody things.
    fairway?
  • you know, keyfoods delivers for free too.

i always order saturdays between 3-5p
    no problems

    Me either.

Me either. I've heard a lot of broken eggs complaints, but have literally never had a single broken egg from an FD delivery. The worst I get is the occasional not so tasty fruit (but almost never blatantly bruised or overripe, etc.), and a missing item, which they don't charge you for if you let them know. Plus, sometimes they mess up orders in reverse and add free things that I didn't order, so it kind of balances.
  • well thats good to know.
I think I might just have to stop ordering yogurt from them. it seems like they throw things into boxes somewhat recklessly, but i am glad to hear the rest of you are having better experiences than i am.
  • I had 3 orders in a row with things missing and no packing slip that went from a piece of fruit all the way up to a $18.99 case of Boylan Soda. After a year of no problems, (and in addition the last of the 3 being LATE and losing the soda to boot), I wrote and complained and insisted that they credit my bank account instantly instead of waiting for a credit as I was not sure I would ever shop there again. They also had a team who left the front door of my apartment building hooked wide open after they left and I complained about that too. Since then, I haven't seen that team of guys. One would hope they were fired. I tried them again after about a month and it's been better but I'm still wary..... they need to clean up their act.
  • and sometimes you get free stuff... i got an extra airborne b/c two were taped together. we also got a can of tomato sauce for some reason.
  • We went through a stretch of missing items, broken containers (they totally mashed a box of cookies once, they were just dust) etc. But they always made good on what they broke. We've had about 8 months of really good service now, same shift and same guys. We really like the quality of the food and the service so we really have no complaints
  • out of curiosity, for those of you that have found the "good shifts", what day and time generally do you have? i just ordered for the first time moving here from clinton hill, and its coming tomorrow from 8-10p... i hope those guys dont bust the kitty litter i have comin!!!
  • I have used Fresh Direct several times, including the day before Turkey Day this year, and I've never had any problems. I usually give the guys a nice tip for humping my groceries up three flights of stairs. The only thing that happened was they gave me 4 cans of vegetable beef instead of chicken soup. No biggie.

I don't order eggs from them because I like to personally inspect my eggs before buying.

I use the 6-9 pm window. They always arrive between 8.30 and 9 pm. They have never been late. At least one other tenant on my floor has regular deliveries too.
  • oh god. they hump the groceries before they bring them???? i hope that they refrain from humping mine.

    *i keeeeeed*
  • For the first time ever last week, I got an order from FD where one box was really overstuffed, with a heavy jar of salsa on top of some soft breakable or squishable items (chips, bread, cereal). I sent them an e-mail and they replied within 24 hours, crediting me with a full refund for the affected items, no questions asked. I don't think you can ask for better than that. And honestly, I think that the overpacking of that box may have in part been a response to criticisms they've gotten about wasteful packaging.
