Wow, ditto and ditto! We just discovered the Bandit stuff a couple of weeks ago and are big fans. We used to get Black Box wine from Love's (which is a majorly good deal...$16.99 for four bottles' worth of very drinkable wine) but after we got spoiled boxes TWICE, we sort of stopped trusting it. At least from there.

But our liquor cabinet is, considering our salaries, hilariously highbrow.

i highly reccommend it. its even better than hollandia, which sometimes tastes a tad bit off...
REEEally...hmm, that's a bold statement. We'll have to try it. Especially since it is in fact CHEAPER than Hollandia too (which I didn't know was possible!)

I've got a bottle of j.w. black that I need to pour more of. too smoky for my taste but I keep trying to drink it. I will donate it to the effort. no one is touching my stoli and presidente stash. unless I like you.

i will sooooo volunteer to take that jw off your hands, hehehehe!

you and ms. sine will have to come over. which means I'll have to clean. shit. I need someone to clean my apartment.

what's this bandit thing? I drink a lot of spanish/south american wine b/c it's far, far cheaper than anything else at a decent if not fantastic quality. but boxes of wine, and any low-brow presentation of booze, are highly appealing to me. I'll take the good stuff, too, of course. I just won't pay for it.

    :)

Actually, they've started putting some really good wine in box form--it's not just Franzia anymore ;) Boxing wine is MUCH cheaper than bottling and corking, with virtually no degradation in taste.

Anyway, the Bandit boxed wine is from Three Thieves ( http://www.threethieves.com/ <---great web site) which also bottles in jugs. (Boxes are cheaper, though).

Oh! this is the stuff at fermented grapes. they have the little boxes for like $7 or something? I bought one once and didn't finish it that day. it went to crap overnight. I'm sure storage-wise it isn't bad but I think the stuff degrades at a much faster pace than bottled wine. next time I buy a box, I'll be sure to finish it.

    sure -- if you're mixing!
  • Yes. That's strange, though; we've never had a problem with boxed wine going bad overnight. In fact, those big boxes of Black Box we would have for quite a while (well, like a week) and they were always fine to the last drop (except when they were bad from the FIRST drop. *shudder*)

note: they took it back without any problem both times that happened.

ah. I'm thinking of the tiny box, sorta like a carton of soy milk, but boozier. I'll have to check out the big box o' love at love's. maybe tonight ... but wait, I have upper canada in my fridge!

I'm guessing that's because most boxed wine has preservatives added to it to keep it from souring. 3 thieves doesn't so you gotta drink it. I use a vacuum seal on my bottles that aren't immediately finished. There's some debate over the effectiveness of that, but as a rule, I never let a red sit more than 2-3 days or so once opened and I've never had a problem.

Yes, you're thinking of the right thing as far as Bandit is concerned. It's tiny.

The big box is "Black Box"...comes in a cabernet and a pinto grigio, if I'm remembering correctly. The white won a boxed wine blind taste test in Real Simple a while back, so I tried it and was not disappointed.

daveB: Yeah, we do the same thing with bottles. On the rare occasion we have one more that lasts more than a day.
  • after the nice man at the place on flatbush between sterling and plaza told me (half jokingly, i think) that he'd "not deign to speak to a woman who dared drink what i was drinking" - a cheap bottle of pinot grigio - i've not been back. partly his snideness, but mostly because i've developed a new obsession that cannot be sated at said liquor store: vinho verde, from portugal. literally "green wine," it's young and bubbly and delicious, and between $5-$7 a bottle. anyone know if you can get it on washington? i've taken to going to the place around the corner from video edge (on the slope side of flatbush, *gasp*) which is much nicer than i thought, but a washington outlet would be nice.

I've seen a pricier version at Fermented Grapes (I love this stuff, too -- you should get that wine store in union sq. to deliver a case to you -- they have a $5 version that I really like, do free delivery to PH and offer a 15% case discount on still wines.) I'll check at Love's tonight. I'm pretty sure Grand Plaza does not have it. No clue about the place at St. Marks & Washington -- it's a confused mess in the wine section and I can't find anything there, especially when I'm a confused mess 99% of the time.

you know there are 'verde' variations from spain and italy, too, right? all yummy.

You'll appreciate this -- I was at Brasserie 8 1/2 last night (for work, I can't afford that shit) and they had a vinho verde on their by the glass wine list for $10/glass. hysterical.
  • I got a small jerk chicken at the Islands. that's enough for two meals. excellent.

at Love's, I got a black box o' white, a bottle of verdicchio, and a four pack of tiny bottles of riuniti lambrusco. what a haul! I'm proud of my restraint, though, because I was really excited about a giagantor bottle of white sangria for $5.99 but I passed it up. I'm not as strong as I think I am. (oh, I didn't see any vino verde)

for your viewing pleasure, photos of the inside of my fridge. I really am female.

I figured it out when I bought some Three Theives this afternoon. It's not that most boxed wine has preservatives, it's that most of it is packaged in a sort of bladder inside the box that keeps it airtight (and thus fresher longer--fresher than bottled, even) even after it's opened. Three Theives just comes in a box the way milk does, so it's exposed to air once you open it and thus likely to spoil if you don't drink it quickly (though really, when is that ever a problem ;))

Sorry, that's just been bugging me. Carry on.

you know, that black box thing is DANGEROUS. I am treating it like my endless supply of wine, thus, I will probably kill it later tonight (if I ever get out of work). dangerous in that I have zero clue how much I've had. oops.

proving a few points ....another photo post. here is the denuded black box. I got home from work at 11:45 p.m. and have been working from home since then and having a few drinks while databases play together. I'm left with:

    later edit:

so I milked the udder and...well, I guess wine doesn't breed or anything. this shit is done, eh? oh my.
  • Yes, we always end up milking it for those last precious few drops too.

    Glad you liked it!

(Hey, it costs less per glass than a case of Bud; at least you're not breaking the bank)

Edited to add: By the way, the red comes in a silver pouch, so you can't see how much is left even when you open the box. You can feel it, though. And there's always one last glass's worth left when it gets to box-opening time.

it's totally amusing to be so interactive. and way less wasteful than the piles of wine bottles i'm generally left with. i wonder what they'd do if i walked in today and bought another box and the giant bottle of white sangria....

  • BTW, the liquor store on Bergen and Washington stays open EVERY NIGHT until midnight, always has. It's one of the reasons I felt safe moving here 4 years ago. You guys should try coming down this way sometimes.

that place is wildly disorganized, though.. it stresses me out. and .. it closes early on sunday. before fermented grapes closes. or it did, the one time i went there on a sunday at like 8:30 p.m.

yeah, my fridge is pretty ghetto. I need a new fridge -- one that doesn't require defrosting and one that will hold industrial strength sizes of stoli bottles.

i used to have the same model fridge- we had to defrost it at least three times every summer- if it was really humid, once every few weeks.
  • Subject: Vinho verde = summer time drink of the gods

    Crusty,

Check out Casal Garcia vinho verde if you get a chance. I've seen it as cheap as $4 a bottle (given, that was a while ago), and it's amazingly tasty. NYC prices are probably closer to $6.

Tonight in the interests of... science.... I'll be conducting a taste test between Belvedere vodka (about $22 per 750ml) and Smirnoff ($10 per 750ml). Given my recent lack of funds, this is a very important experiment.

Because I wanted to be the very best barkeep that I could possibly be (and because I just love good likker), I did quite a few vodka taste tests... and tequila taste tests... and whisk(e)y taste tests... bourbon taste tests... :D Out of the middle tier vodkas, I like Stoli. Oh, one that's also quite often overlooked (and pretty damn cheap) Svedka. It's no Grey Goose, Belvedere, etc, but it's not bad...

What kinds of vodka drinks do you usually have?
