  • so
not only do we have a new commanding officer and one new captain
    but
Det. Raton has left as well, leaving us with 1 community affairs officer: Det. Mclean

we have a huge precinct, and even with 2 CA officers, i found it hard to make contact

it is up to Deputy Inspector Cosgrove whether or not to assign a replacement for Raton,
I think this would be an important meeting to attend to voice our concerns...
  • Det. Mclean=ParadeRest? :-k
  • Any idea where Raton has gone? I liked him. Although he didn't have any answers, he had worked in the area for many years and was definitely a believer that the precint especially the east end was slowly starting to turn around.
  • Make sure to ask about the recent Black Panther activity on Kingston Avenue. The last few nights the Black Panthers with blood and crip gang members have been meeting at a "wellness center". The first night there was a near riot situation on the street and last night there was a "listening party" and open mic night at the wellness center in which the Panthers openly invited all neighborhood gang members in the hope of "uniting" the opposing forces.

You can't make this stuff up.
  • is the meeting 6:30 or 7:30. The original poster has two different times

There was a third CA officer introduced about three months ago. I just don't remember his name. He'll probably be at the 77th Pct. Council meeting tonight though.
  • @ tootsie: the meeting is at 7:30 (my original post was at 6:35 am, maybe that is the confusion)

@ paraderest: why don't you come to the meeting and ask yourself?

just for the record, i brought up the new black panther party about 3 months ago at a community board 8 police committee meeting because they were leafletting on my block and both Jesse Hamilton and Det Raton looked at me as if I had two heads...
  • I'll be there.
  • how was the meeting? anyone have a report? oh wait, it just started. sorry, I'm in pretend time in the pit of hell (aka downtown wilmington delaware)

    That is TEH HORRIBAL!!!

and you would prefer that they *not* talk to gang members? or...what?
  • pitu wrote: and you would prefer that they *not* talk to gang members? or...what?
I think he questions the ultimate goal of uniting them...
  • I went to this meeting. I stuck out like a sore thumb. But I found the other two who did not camouflage very well either (Neene and Gregory), and they seemed to know many more community-active people than I did, which isn't hard considering I knew zero and they knew a number that was non-zero.

Because I work nights and can't attend these meetings. Is that okay with you?
  • it has nothing to do with me

    on the other hand,
someone suggesting what i should or should not talk about does.

while i did speak with Det. McLean about it (and the trees) privately, i didn't feel it was the right time for me to bring this up.

the meeting actually was focused on an award ceremony for the kids who excelled in what i am gathering is the PAL,
all i know is that the community turned out full force to honor these kids who get up at 6 AM to play sports and the officers who take their time out to coach them.
    imho
giving the youth of crown heights an alternative to the streets is as important to moving forward as is any discussion of gangs and it didn't seem the moment to focus on that aspect of life here...

    @ rawb
    lol
i think i have always stuck out like a sore thumb
it has never occured to me to camouflage it
  • and paraderest,
would you call the community affairs office (718-735-0634) and report what you know about the meetings and their location?
there was a genuine interest in that,
(or pm me and i'll do it)

and did i get any more info about the trees
    no, not really
conversations with nypd often seem to be like that to me
    but
did i get the impression that the precinct knows that this is a concern of the community?
    yes
and that is half the battle
  • I had to leave at 8:30 to pick up my daughter.

Could someone tell me what James Caldwell was talking about? All I got was something regarding a black police chief. If your going to talk to the press at least you should make a courtesy call. I know that most of the dialog was directed at Tish, but I'm clueless about the backstory.

I was surprised about the lack of questions to the new commanding officer. In my opinion the only question of substance was why don't we have a replacement for Det. Raton. I guess it was a honeymoon meeting.
  • The 'New' Black Panthers and their Rhetoric
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    The Panther’s Roar
A new black-power group with an old name.

    By Geoffrey Gray
    New York Magazine
    December 18, 2006

In the wake of the police killing of unarmed bridegroom Sean Bell, the New Black Panther Party is trying to make its presence felt in Queens. Don’t expect leader-lawyer Malik Zulu Shabazz at Park Avenue radical-chic cocktail parties. “Years have proven that some alliances just don’t work,” Shabazz (real name: Paris Lewis) says of the old Panthers’ efforts to enlist whites to their cause. But the New Black Panthers aren’t really Black Panthers at all, the old Panthers say. According to a letter from the Dr. Huey P. Newton Foundation, the New Panthers are “angry young militants full of fury” who have stolen the Panther name. Al Sharpton isn’t taking the group seriously either, insulting one of their rallies in the Daily News. “Recklessness will only make it look like Sean Bell and his friends were reckless and deserved what they got,” Sharpton said, noting the Bell family’s repeated requests for calm. But Shabazz doesn’t really care. “Sharpton’s tactics are far too nice for myself and many in the streets,” Shabazz says. “In a time of war, when the police are attacking and raiding homes and shooting black men and the people are frustrated, I wouldn’t have run right to the mayor for a public-relations opportunity When you’re at war, you don’t immediately negotiate with the opposition.” At a recent rally, Shabazz organized gang members from the Bloods and Crips and had them point at police and shout, “Fifty shots for 50 cops.” There were signs saying death to the pigs who kill our kids. So far, he claims to have 5,000 members around the country—about the same number as the Black Panthers had in the late sixties. In response to Shabazz’s rhetoric, the Anti-Defamation League is calling the Panthers “the largest organized anti-Semitic black militant group in America.” (Shabazz says he’s “anti-Zionist.”) The group is initiating a boycott against non-black-owned businesses during the holidays, and is planning more anti-cop rallies. “We have to go further than we’ve gone after previous police shootings,”he says. “Clearly, there is a large swath of territory that is open to those who are uncompromising.”

Det. McLean is still in Community Affairs.

Any information that I might have will certainly not be given to Community Affairs who are absolutely useless in this matter other than to deny that there are any problems or tell us that they'll look into it. My info is given to those in the precinct and out that can actually do something with the info. What is Ratton or Mclean going to do? Their purpose is to address the needs and concerns of the residents and to give out information that may help the public. Legitimate info regarding illegal activity should instead be sent to Special Operations or the Squad. I have no use for Community Affairs, sorry.
  • @paraderest: if you have already provided the information to the people who you think can act on it, why would you want me to raise a question, in a public meeting about something that i have only heard about on a message board, posted by someone i do not know?????
quig wrote: I was surprised about the lack of questions to the new commanding officer. In my opinion the only question of substance was why don't we have a replacement for Det. Raton. I guess it was a honeymoon meeting.
funny you should raise that particular point as that was actually one of 3 questions that were posed...

i tried above to explain above why i thought the meeting went the way it did:
easily 2/3rds of the people present were there for the awards:
    half of them were children,
the other half were there to support the kids,
the remaining 1/3 was the core community.
as i said the focus of this meeting was a bit different from normal; it was to honor the kids and i think some questions were held in respect of that (i know that is why i was not as vocal as usual)

as far as what caldwell was talking about, well that's not always clear but he seemed to be making 2 main points:
    • he wanted everyone to call assemblyman elect hakeem jeffries (718-622-5380) in support of the Atlantic Yards projects as he feels it will bring jobs to the community
sidebar: if you are against the yards you might want to call to jeffries to counteract this
    • and i believe that there was some sort of release, which letitia james was part of that addressed the issue of diversity when it comes to appointing the commanding officers of the precinct and that caldwell did not agree with this, BUT i might have this ass backwards so someone correct me if i am wrong
greg wrote: There was a third CA officer introduced about three months ago. I just don't remember his name. He'll probably be at the 77th Pct. Council meeting tonight though.
there was no mention of a 3rd CA officer
  • I suggested that the topic be raised because I think that it's an important issue and the people who live in the area may not be aware that the Black Panthers are setting up shop on Kingston Avenue. I find it troublesome that the Panthers are urging opposing gangs to gather together. The flyer that they sent out actually gave travel directions so I'm assuming that they are trying to gather gang members from other areas in our community. I don't see anything good coming out of this.

After reading that the meeting had alot of children present being honored by the community, I agree that it was not the perfect forum for a more in depth discussion about the gang problem. Better luck next time. Hopefully I'll be off.
  • I also find it interesting Shabazz has set up shop here in NY. He is a college grad with a law degree who if I remember correctly is from the west coast. Wonder how he managed to find his way to CH?
