Dean St. btwn Bedford and Nostrand — Brooklynian

Dean St. btwn Bedford and Nostrand

My girlfriend and I are taking a 6 month sublet on Dean St. between Bedford and Nostrand. I was wondering if anybody had anything to say about the block in terms of safety, etc.

We jumped on the place because of the price and the space (and because the timeframe fit our needs), but scouring the web today we've come across a bunch of stories that have made us sort of wary - not about that block in particular, but about surrounding blocks.

We've been living in the south end of 5th Ave. Park Slope for the past couple of years.

Thanks for any advice.

  • Hey, I just moved to Bergen and Franklin a month ago. Dean between Bedford and Nostrand is a pretty nice block. More people seem to care about the neighborhood on that block. I moved from 5th Ave and 4th Street, I loved Park Slope but it was too expensive. The area I'm in now is rough but it's ok and it's definitely changing. Just don't wander around at night flashing money looking like a target and you'll be good. Good luck!
  • i live on bergen near franklin, too. i agree with the above poster- it's still a rough area so you gotta be cautious at night, but people have been fine to me for the most part since i moved here about 5 months ago. not sure about that block of dean, but my block can get pretty loud when the weather's warm- but it's mostly just people bbq'ing and playing music.
  • Cool. Thanks for the info. I think we're probably gonna take it. The block looks real nice. Gonna bike over this weekend to check out the neighborhood in the day. Any more comments are appreciated!
  • We have lived the next block over for 7 years and have felt safe and like the neighborhood, etc. There have defintely been changes since then. I like the block you are looking at--beautiful buildings. It seems pretty quiet and safe when I walk down that block.
  • My boyfriend lived on that block for a year, and I visited on weekends. We both really liked the area. When the weather isn't too cold there are a lot of people out, sitting on stoops, or hanging out - it feels like a family block and people were friendly. We moved to another place in the area, since the rent was going up and the new place was a better deal, but I was happy in that area. The worst part was parking, but it isn't too bad if you don't come home too late. There are usually more spots between Franklin and Classon.
  • Just out of curiosity, how has the area changed?

That block surely is nice! It is part of the area being considered for Landmarking by the Landmark Preservation Commission. The architecture is wonderful but too neglected. Hopefully that will change once the landmarking is approved.
