Come meet our elected officials and share your concerns. The Prospect Heights Neighborhood Development Council hosts a community forum with the elected officials who will address development, security and quality of life issues in our neighborhood over the next several years.

As I mentioned above - PHNDC, Prospect Heights Neighborhood Development Council, which also hosted the Congressional debate at Duryea over the summer.

This is not a naive question! I was involved in PHNDC for a while, and I hope I can answer the question propertly. PHNDC strives to represent all the groups in Prospect Heights, and so it does not take a position in favor or against the Atlantic Yards proposal. It is a member of BrooklynSpeaks, but it is not a member of the Develop Don't Destroy coalition of neighborhood organziations.

Sorry I didn't get a chance to reply to this before the meeting took place.

Raul is correct is indicating that PHNDC's mission is broader than Atlantic Yards - it includes zoning, traffic calming and landmarking. As for Atlantic Yards - PHNDC opposes the project.

Here's from its website:
"PHNDC shares the concerns expressed by other local organizations regarding the scale and density of the Atlantic Yards project, its potential to create traffic conditions that overwhelm local roads, the disruptions caused by its protracted construction period , and its potential use of eminent domain. In its comments on the DEIS, PHNDC recommended that the ESDC disapprove the Atlantic Yards project as presently constituted."

I was curious if anyone on this board got a chance to go to the meeting last night. It was a really lively crowd - even Foxy Brown made an appearance. Atlantic Yards was only one of many issues raised by raised by the audience.

I would say the hot button issue of the night was rats. All elected officials stressed the importance of calling 311 with details every time we spot a rat. Having the sightings on the record helps electeds make a stronger case to city agencies. In addition to residential infestations, the manner in which businesses and PS 9 handle their trash has contributed to the issue.

Did bedbugs or random shootings come up as well?

no mention of bedbugs. But dog poop was a hot topic. A lot of sanitation/environment questions in general - illegal dumping, rodent response, flooding...

And yes, there were lots a of cop-related questions. The CO of the 77th Precinct was there, and of course our new State Senator, Eric Adams, is a former cop. There were questions about shootings, the various special units, police harassment of black youth, cops running red lights or parking on the sidewalk, even the precinct boundaries.

And of course the obligatory Atlantic Yards questions - though the evening was notably free of confrontation or extreme emotion concerning this topic.

I've decided to call St. Johns Place "Doo Doo Lane" due (pun intended) to all the dog shit up and down the sidewalk. I'm thinking I should carry latex glove with me in case I see someone walking their dog and not picking up it's shit. Is it fair game to pick up said shit and rub it in the face of the perpetrator? :-k

Was the Underhill playground rebuilding mentioned at all? If so, did they say when it will be done?

Council Member James said she had spoken this week with Parks Department, which told her that it would be done by May. Last time I walked by, it seemed like it was almost finished.

It is absolutely fair, but could be construed as assault...

I wish there were an efficient way to identify and penalize those a-holes who are too good to pick up after their own dogs...any suggestions?(besides flinging poo at them?)

I thought it looked like progress was being made too. The sign says "Winter 2006"-- I don't know why it takes so long! THanks for the update.

I've noticed lots more dog crap on St. Johns place over the last few weeks. Someone is brazenly leaving big piles of dog crap in the middle of the street. The irony is, the old neighborhood residents think its the "new" people leaving dog doo on the sidewalk and many of the "new" people think its the "old" residents letting their dogs crap on the street. I say we set up a few hidden cameras and figure this out. From what I can tell, the crapping takes place between 4am and 6am.
