Nasty Fairway Produce
Their produce looked so beautiful and fresh when they first opened, but things seem to be going rapidly downhill. Lately a lot of their vegetables look old and tired. Two weeks in a row, I bought a bag of apples (prebagged) and most of the apples were so badly bruised they weren't edible (not just little bruises you could cut off but half the apple rotten).
Last Sunday, I bought a bag of potatoes. Pulled it out tonight to make latkes for Hanukah dinner and discovered that several of the potatoes had turned into a vile-smelling ooze. Which leaked all over my cabinet and then the floor. It was foul. I've had potatoes sprout into little potato trees in my cabinets plenty of times but I've never seen anything like this. Really nasty.
Am I having bad luck or is their produce not what it was? This might be enough to send me back to C-Town.

I haven't had any problems with the produce, but the pre-bagged stuff generally tends to go bad quicker.

did you pick it up outside the store, out front? Apparently, that's the "riper" fruit, or so I've heard.

We have had problems with the produce. Fresh Direct is usually much fresher and usually tastes better and it is easier to return when we get home fruit or vegetables that are off. I have also had problems with their organic milk lasting less then a week while Fresh Direct lasts for a month.

i agree. Produce at Fairway isn't that great, you really have to watch it.
I keep meaning to try 3 guys from Brooklyn on Ft Hamilton Pkwy and 65th St -

Yeah, it was from out front. I will definitely be more careful about that, and the prebagged stuff. But still, potatoes and apples should last a good long time under the right conditions; I think they must be handling those bags of apples very roughly.
I don't love Fresh Direct's produce, either. Looks pretty, and it's packaged to survive a small explosion, but it often isn't very tasty. Maybe I'm too picky. But those potatoes were absolutely vile. I Lysol'ed and mopped and the stench is still hanging around my kitchen. -
Gross. I've had great luck with Fairway produce, but I've always picked it from the inside. Beautiful stuff, and tasty and fresh. I also bought a pre-bagged of organic apples for use in a Thankgiving recipe there with no problems whatsoever.
