the Key Food 8-year-old cashier: anyone saw him?

He's the managers son, I've seen him work a couple times. The hilarious thing is that he's one of the most efficient check out people they have! He's really good at it! Usually one of the regular cashiers will bag while he's working.
-
Good for him! I used to wait on customers at my parents' hardware store when I was a kid in exchange for a small commission on all my sales, and I think it instilled a pretty decent work ethic.

which key food is that?

The much maligned 7th ave Key Foods

Maybe, being 8 yrs old, he still has a bit of joie de vivre, in comparison to the other checkers, who appear to have had all personality and life drained from their bodies.

Wow. Now child labor in the Slope ... and the kid probably is smarter than all of those cashiers there. -

I know in NC where I'm from the labor laws are WAY different the child is a son or daughter of the owner or manager of the store. Its legal for wayyy younger kids to work in those types of jobs (not working with food/knives/heat etc) I don;t know about NYC but I would imagine its the same, esp considering the amount of family owned businesses. -

I think you can get a worker's permit at age 12 for certain types of work (I remember getting one at that age). -
Yep, I had "working papers" when I delivered newspapers in the afternoon and on Sunday mornings. But I was at least 11 or 12 years old.
Can a kid process credit/debit card transactions? Though one had to be 16 or above to do that ... just a guess. -
dw438, I don't know of any limitations by the credit card companies on the age of employees that use the system. I do know that most technology these days is designed to be operated by someone with the basic skills of a 3rd-4th grader. McDonalds started leading this trend years ago when they moved from regular cash registers, to registers with the product names on buttons, to buttons with the pictures of food on it. The idea is that for a lot of these jobs the workforce has limited education or in some cases limited language abilities, so they try to make the process as simple as possible.

This must be a joke. You must be 16 to work at Key Food. -
No, it's not a joke - federal and state labor laws don't apply to family owned businesses when the minor in question is a member of the family. Now, if this guy is just the manager, ie an employee of the Key Foods Chain, and not a franchise owner... that would be a different story.
