Norman Siegel Flyers
ARRRGH! One of my major pet peeves about our wonderful neighborhood is all the crap that people dump on my stoop everyday -- ads, menus etc. I'm not a neat freak, but it makes me nuts having to clean it up. Anyway, today there were these stupid Norman Siegel flyers everywhere. So I sent the guy the following message. Please feel free to pigpile on him if you feel the same way.
here's his email address:
[email protected]
here's my message:
I know nothing about you or your campaign other than the following -- this morning I found 5 of your flyers scattered around my stoop. Almost everyday I find myself in the annoying routine of cleaning up menus, car service business cards, grocery store flyers and so on. So at first this was just another irritating ad that delayed me on my way to work. Then on my way to the subway I saw your litter scattered throughout the neighborhood -- on the sidewalks, in the street, in the bushes. Disgusting. Disrespectful. Politically stupid.
Although our neighborhood is often thought of as a dumping ground by politicians, those of who live there feel otherwise. These are our homes, our neighborhood. We work hard to keep to keep it clean and livable.
I hope that you have your mess cleaned up by the end of the day today. I will be posting a copy of this message onto our neighborhood blog.

While I agree that the campaign "litter-ature" is out of control, I hope you can see past it to look at Norman Siegel's credentials as a Public Advocate candidate. As former Executive Director of the New York Civil Liberties Union, he has a long history of fighting exactly the kind of battles that the PA is supposed to be waging. I think he would be a return to the kind of strong, active type of advocate that we as NYers need and deserve.

I totally agree with Bral re: the flyers on stoops and cars. They end up littering the street and are a waste of valuable trees. I personally refuse to use any business that uses flyers. I have also complained to some of the local businesses that do so hoping they change their marketing efforts. I am not sure if it has work, but if enough people complaint I bet they would reconsider this practice.

I don't know his politics at all -- I just thought scattering his litter all around my neighborhood makes him seem more like a public nuisance than a public advocate. I'll reserve final judgement based on how his campaign responds to my email.
All this makes me feel like a cranky old man -- but I feel passionately that about the need for basic respect for each other as human beings. Dumping garbage all over me and my neighborhood is disrespectful. Full stop. -

Teensy correction -- Siegel is the former ED of the NYCLU; he resigned in 2001. -
Subject: We need Norman Siegel
As time goes by, I have become more and more involved in local politics. I have been active in DDDb because I want to keep out Ratner's architectural rubbish. And as of last week I became the Brooklyn coordinator of the Norman Siegel for Public Advocate campaign. I live on Prospect between Flatbush and Carlton, so these are very personal issues to me. In fact, I nearly got beaten up by Blackwell supporters because I took down some of their posters.
So let me state as clearly as possible: Norman Siegel is on our side. He has been in charge of the DDDb legal campaign against the abuse of eminent domain. Also, it is the policy of the campaign not to put up posters in public areas, including the illegal but common practice of putting signs on street polls.
Norman is trying to run a (literally) clean campaign, and littering is against the campaign's policies. I apologize for this incident.
I just found out about the flyers on Carlton, and I biked over and picked up the pieces that I could find. I will also speak with the team of people who threw them around, and please contact me personally if there are any further examples of our literature being littered about.
In spite of this bad first impression, I hope everyone here become active Norman Siegel supporters. If he gets elected, he will use the office to fight abuses of eminent domain, not only in Prospect Heights, but in Harlem and other neighborhoods.
If you have other concerns or questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
Raul Rothblatt

Wow, alright then. Thanks!
