its not PC...but — Brooklynian

its not PC...but

its funny as heck and spot on.. :D

What White People on the subway want Black People to know:

1. If there are two inches of space between two people on a seat, it doesn`t entitle your big [censored] to squeeze in that space!

2. Eating Popeye`s Chicken, pizza, McDonald`s or cheese puffs is not permitted on the train.

3. Just because you got the latest 50 cent CD, doesn`t mean that the whole subway car needs to hear it

4. Your kids should not change the destination signs or spin on the poles like strippers.

5. Men: Yes, we know your penis is big. Now close your legs so someone else can sit down!

6. The very last car is not the "Smoking Lounge."

7. Girls, before leaving, please wipe off the seat if your cheeks are not covered by your shorts.

What Black people on the subway want White people to know:

1. Your laptop and Starbucks coffee did not pay $2.00 to ride, move it so I can sit down.

2. When you yell at your kids, it`s OK to cuss them out & smack them along side the head.

3. If someone is in the doorway, and they are not budging because it is too crowded to move...DO NOT PUSH THEM...just a kind warning.

4. White chick, if you don`t stop flinging your hair back in my face, you ain`t gonna have any hair.

5. There is no need to completely spread out your Wall Street Journal during rush hour.

6. Staring too hard at her round booty might get you knocked out.

7. Don`t brag about how well your 401k plan is doing.

What ALL people on the subway want Asian people to know:

1. Let the people OFF the train first!

2. DO NOT eat garlic or ginger first thing in the morning.

3. The seat goes to the person closest to it, not the one who can run the fastest.

4. More than 4 plastic produce bags per person are not permitted on the train.

5. When in groups of 2 or more, please speak English, and make sure you keep the volume under the decibels of any busy airport!

6. Let the people OFF the train first (worth repeating)...

7. Just cause you are tired, doesn't mean you can fall asleep against the nearest person.

8. Just because you kept ya hands clean all day in the deli doesn`t mean that you can now pick your nose in front of others!.

9. *And thanks for those $1 batteries.*

  • Why is this here? Not even funny. Just really, really sad reflection on the poster. Perhaps next time you post racist trash you can post your name and phone number as well.
  • oh please don't be so uptight....I found it funny and yes I have had those thoughts....if the mods think its offensive they can remove it

its a lot less racist than some of the posts I've seen around here :)
  • Thalia, this is EXCELLENT!!!. Nice to see people in this city can have a sense of humor despite the stress of living/commuting here. People are waaaaaaaaaay too PC nowadays, whatever happened to 'funny'? This is funny. People are too quick to be offended, everyone in this city is looking to fight or sue each other. Anyone who finds this racist probably IS a racist at heart.
  • I'll only say that I've never seen anyone of any persuasion smoking on the subway. Does that happen?
  • white people against blacks. blacks against whites. and all against asians. i see how this works.

/stocks up on guns and ammo

    come and get me!!!
  • sadly, I have only seen someone smoking crack on the subway, though that was quite a while ago.

I don't really have any problem with this myself (the post, not the crack smoking), I think we would all be better off is we could stand to be made fun of more often
  • Drano wrote: I'll only say that I've never seen anyone of any persuasion smoking on the subway.
Agreed. I've seen a few people on platforms, but that's it.

There have been many late nights where I wanted to smoke on the subway.

    WTF?

This kind of humor is generally improved by being actually funny. Too bad we had to get rid of karma, because this is the variety of post it was made for.
  • I give it +2 Karma points

Yeah, I don't get that one at all. Decibel-wise, the group I have problems with is high school girls. All that screeching and silly forced laughter echoing at ear-splitting levels.

I know what you mean. It's like they are trying to convince themselves that they are having some grand, HI-larious time.

I really think armchair_warrior is the only one to have picked up on the actual subtext of this post. The observations about whites and blacks are so commonplace as to be utterly banal and unfunny (wow, white people like Starbucks? and black people listen to rap? You don't say! ). Those not-so incisive observations are just an excuse, or cover-story, to repeat a bunch of xenophobic canards about Asian people--the actual purpose of the piece.

So yes, I do think it's offensive. However, I think it would only merit removal under a "kittens and rainbows" rule, which is not what we're about. On the other other hand, I find it sort of disturbing that this appeared ex nihilo--I feel like most times when people post offensive thoughts here it's in the processing of actually thinking through an issue. In this piece there's not much thought and no issues.

thanks for posting this, Emily. I've been struggling to figure out something to say beyond "what a racist, lame pile of crap" and, obvi, was incapable. so I'm really glad you did. and yeah - for once I agree with AW.  :D:D
  • i make no apologies for my sense of humour..not only do I find it very funny...I've had those some of those thoughts on the subway and yes even joked about it with friends..ayes.. some of it is stretch...but there is some truth there..and I don't see a problem with laughing at it

I guess some people on this website would rather hide their real
racist thoughts behind coded the coded language I see here all the time..but no lemme guess..yu don't see colour, right?

and no..it was not a coded racist post intended to stimulate even more coded discussion
  • I agree that high schoolers should be banned from subways....They suck.

    yay! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godwin's_Law
in any case, I do think it is racist to, for instance, single out Asians for speaking a foreign language. and to find that humorous.
I also don't really think sharing your racism makes you any more righteous than the closeted racist.
  • yep..I'm racist against..black people, white people and asians...lemme guess I'm hispanic..dwl...

you really need to go check the definition of racism before you start throwing it around..here I'll save you the trouble (better yet why don't you try living with it?):

Racism is commonly defined as a belief or doctrine where inherent biological differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, with a corollary that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others.

now where did I say what I found funny on that list?

I'm not the one who's been self righteous here.. most of these are fairly common place observations of what takes place on the subway..I've certainly seen it..difference is I'm open enough to admit it and have a laff...

now go find something real to protest about :)

btw: I did not create that list...it was on another website..I am guilty of finding it as funny as heck and posting it here
  • thalia wrote:

Right, that's why I said it was xenophobic.
  • y'all are even funnier than that list...lol
  • Emily wrote: [quote=thalia]

actually, I think it's both. xenophobic - fear of the foreign. racist - superior race (whichever it is - just not asian, from the text of the "joke") rules over inferior race (asians) by dictating behavior through mockery.

in any case, even if I felt like buying into a bunch of shitty stereotypes, the "joke" still ain't funny.
  • thalia wrote: y'all are even funnier than that list...lol
So, shall I mark you down for one "doesn't know what 'xenophobia' means," then? I agree with you that there are more important things in life. But you're certainly not taking much responsibility for the content of this post, and you posted it! And I came here because someone complained to me about it, FYI.
  • no, Mam..I don't know what the very big word means..can you please spell it out for me..lol..keep the names coming you might actually hit on one I agree with :D

Precisely..what is there to take responsibility for? I think its funny and I posted it...what else?..

if others don't find it funny...that's life..did I not say in my second post the mods are free to remove it...? but no..you'd rather try to chastise me into making me believe I'm something..ain't gonna happen.. [-X

I belong to one of the groups on that list..I'm not getting my undies in a knot over it..because you know what..sometimes within (the) group we actually laugh at ourselves..imagine that

and the other poster all she cares about is that Asians are on the list..if that's not irony I don't know what is..lol
  • Emily and Alfairnidia.

Do you think any observations that are based on generalizations about an ethnic group are bad?

I see an awful lot of comedians on tv making fun of their own ethnic group (forget about making jokes about others for a second)

I saw a black comedian a few weeks ago who made a ton of jokes about blacks along the lines of those above.

This humor is part of our culture. We should embrace it instead of rejecting it out of knee jerk political correctness I think.

Of course, I'm just a jew boy that likes to make jokes about everything and shit Jewish comedians are a dime a dozen.
  • I don't get the supposedly "Asian" stereotypes in this thing as being Asian, except for the produce bags. My reaction was basically, 'Huh?'

And the "please speak English" thing is just too stupid for words.
  • Okay, steve, I think we are more on the same page about this post.

First, it sets white and black people in humorous contrast (each group speaking about the other) and then says a bunch of things about Asian people, apparently in the voice of both white and black people, while never giving these supposed Asian people a chance to make fun of white or black people. That seems somehow unfair and imbalanced, even in the context of the joke. As AW says, the punchline comes off like "But after all, the one thing white and black people can agree on is how much we hate Asian immigrants!"

Second, it says things about white and black people that I can imagine members of each group saying about themselves, but I have more difficulty imagining Asian people finding "you should speak English" or garlic jokes funny. I could be wrong about that, but the evidence so far (AW) suggests that I'm on the right track.

Third, I don't see this as a racial thing at all. I see it as a natives-versus-immigrants thing: white and black people, presumably born here, implicitly ganging up on Asian immigrants. I don't think it's funny when people are jerks about how others should speak English, whether the others in question are Latino, Asian, or from wherever else. Most people who make a big deal about how others should speak English are huge assholes about a variety of other issues affecting immigrants, so I guess I don't like to let it slide.

So no, I certainly do not think that all jokes based generalizations are bad. Often, they are pretty funny. What I object to here is items 2, 5, and maybe 8 on the list about Asian people, which I find xenophobic, mean-spirited, and so far, not funny to any member of the group in question--which makes what you say, while interesting, not entirely germane. I couldn't care less about the lists of observations about white and black people.

And to thalia--the general spirit of this board is to debate things rather than censor them. I'm a Site Admin, so I could easily delete this entire thread if I felt like it, but that's not how it's set up to work. You are free to ignore me, and the only penalty is that my opinion of you won't be improved.
  • I'm one of the folks that brought up racism with respect to the supposed humor. in essence, all three of the lists, with a few exceptions, are issues of simple courtesy and are descriptions of discourteous behavior perpetrated by all sorts of people of all different backgrounds. so to list them as behaviors of certain racial groups ONLY, and to describe those behaviors in a mocking, superior fashion, is racist. I may be the only person who thinks that reading this thread, but I kinda doubt it. I also don't think it's PCness that leads me to believe what I do.
the exceptions, as Emily notes, are xenophobic. I'd also describe them as racist, but again, I may be alone in that.
finally, I do have a sense of humor: I laughed hysterically during the film Borat. and that movie is based entirely on setting up situations in which people behave in a stereotypical way, especially with respect to their mania and prejudices. but, rather than setting up a joke that pokes fun at black people, white people and/or asian people, the joke is set up to make fun of the mania and the prejudce. that humor can be just as base as good ole racist humor and I find it a hell of a lot funnier.
  • alafairnadia wrote: I'm one of the folks that brought up racism with respect to the supposed humor. in essence, all three of the lists, with a few exceptions, are issues of simple courtesy and are descriptions of discourteous behavior perpetrated by all sorts of people of all different backgrounds.
While the lists threw a humorous light on awkward moments between passengers on crowded subway cars, I did not understand why specific bad manners were attributed to specific ethnic groups. When riding the subway daily, I see people of various backgrounds acting badly in various ways.
I can relate to some of the experiences the lists described, such as seeing some idiot spreading personal objects on a free seat, but can't relate to the notion that only certain ethnic groups do specific annoying things on the train. This joke could have been told in another way, without the racism.

Didn't you know all Asians speak Chinese?

Just kidding. I had the same reaction.
  • What bothered me the most was the idea that black people lean towards violence. I've seen plenty of white boys snap in rage.
  • so I'm roaming around this ever sooo liberal board and look what I run into on another post...it's almost too much of a coincidence..lol...there were a few more comments abput people eating food on the subway..but as no specific group was named i guess they're acceptable.. :D

    I also can't stand:

    1) when people eat fast food or any other stinky food on the subway (i'm not sure how they can eat a meal in such a unappealing environment anyway)

    2) nail biting/filing

    3) constant gum snapping/cracking (experienced this one last night)

    4) people who use their tongue to "suck" the food out of their teeth- such a gross sound.

    5) When people sit across the aisle from each other and carry on LOUD conversations (esp when in Chinese)

    6) When people spit on the subway: I saw some teenage boys hock lugees and spit them on the subway floor.
