  • AFN..so you like Borat...go tell that to the people who felt they were humiliated by that movie and are suing him..

    yep...you are predictably just what I expected

    personally I would not waste my money or time seeing that movie...
  • Emily..I'm aware that you're an Admin (the title below your name is a dead give away..lol). I'm, also, aware that you have the power at the delete button at your fingertips.

    I don't get a "spirit of debate" from you. What I am sensing is an attempt to brow beat/chastise/guilt me into seeing things your way. Why the need to add the comment that.. if I ignore you..your opinion of me won't improve...why would I care? I'm not too impressed with you either.

    you throw around terms like xenophobia and racism..dollars to donuts these are only concepts you've studied..but never actually experienced..or you would not throw them around so lightly..so please go try that head trip on someone else :D

    I bet you guys cannot even have a real dialogue with a person from another race because you're so caught up in the not highlighting the differences
  • raw wrote: [quote=alafairnadia]I'm one of the folks that brought up racism with respect to the supposed humor. in essence, all three of the lists, with a few exceptions, are issues of simple courtesy and are descriptions of discourteous behavior perpetrated by all sorts of people of all different backgrounds.
    While the lists threw a humorous light on awkward moments between passengers on crowded subway cars, I did not understand why specific bad manners were attributed to specific ethnic groups. When riding the subway daily, I see people of various backgrounds acting badly in various ways.
    I can relate to some of the experiences the lists described, such as seeing some idiot spreading personal objects on a free seat, but can't relate to the notion that only certain ethnic groups do specific annoying things on the train. This joke could have been told in another way, without the racism.

    RAW..just to pick a couple

    AA men do tend to sprawl and take up the seat more than other people and yes I've thought damn is it really that big..I've had conversation with male friends and asked them why they do that..
    Chinese people do tend to make a mad rush for the seats...I have no idea if this is a cultural thing like the Japanese pushing to fit in a subway car
    Caucasians do act out the hair and newspaper thing

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    At any rate.. I don't have an issue with peeps not finding the jokes funny....some people like Borat..others don't..lol
    just don't try to label me because I do find them funny, zeen?
  • laura wrote: I don't get the supposedly "Asian" stereotypes in this thing as being Asian, except for the produce bags. My reaction was basically, 'Huh?'
    And the "please speak English" thing is just too stupid for words. :roll:
    go figure..I don't find the produce bags thing specific to Asians at all.. I come from a culture that conducts plenty of produce bag shopping..every Saturday I struggle home with at least 4 or 5 plastic bags of produce which I then recycle into garbage bags...only difference is my bags are so darn heavy I take a taxi home
    now if you tell me you don't see Asians selling $1 batteries...I won't believe you ride the subway..
    Well, yes, that was exactly my point. Perhaps I was too dry. The stakes are not particularly high. Who really cares? I bring up objections to your post and you ignore them; there are multiple ways of interpreting that and I have mine.
    thalia wrote: you throw around terms like xenophobia and racism..dollars to donuts these are only concepts you've studied..but never actually experienced..or you would not throw them around so lightly..so please go try that head trip on someone else :D
    I haven't mentioned "racism" at all, despite your repeated and dishonest attempts to put the word in my mouth. And I certainly don't think I use the word "xenophobic" lightly; I chose it carefully and have explained why. You're right that I haven't really experienced either. But do you really want to imply that I shouldn't call it like I see it in that case? I can't imagine that many people on this board would be fans of the logical conclusion of that line of thinking.
  • Emily..I would have some serious issues if I gave a toss about what some faceless person in cyberspace thought about me or if I let them define me... I don't even know if your real name is Emily...I know nothing about you and you only know what you think you know of me...how can your opinion of me matter...at the end of the day I can only be true to myself
    and FYI my first response about racism was not directed to you at all go back and read it.. the second (or as you call it repeated) response was to you and AFN..hope that settles that
    i guess it never crossed your mind that you may actually be exchanging remarks with someone who has experienced your so-called "xenophobia" and therefore may actually have a real clue? Now how close minded is that???
    ..we disagree about the jokes..i won't let you or anyone else on this board define me.. I think I'm kind of through with this convo...don't intend to offend..I just don't see it going anywhere and I have a short attention span
    take care Emily...peace
  • OMG..AFN. :lol::lol: ..I know you did not start a post with the title below (and to think I almost overlooked it..just a couple of posts down)??? this is exactly the kind of harmful coded language this board specialises in and there you are going on and on and on and on about so called racism...you're turning out to be more hypocritical than I even thought..or maybe you're just clueless? No.no.. lemme guess..its not a shitty stereotype aimed at Asians so its all good.
  • Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh!
    Sorry, just had to get that out.
    right... so all the people (aside from the romanians - exploitation isn't my bag) who articulated their beliefs in that movie were humiliated? lame lame lame. if you say something racist, classist, sexist, xenophobic, etc, at least own up to it. don't sue someone for making money off of your idiocy.
    yep, that's me. clueless. sarcasm isn't part of my game. so, in light of my previous post, if anyone took my post to mean anything racist, classist, xenophobic, etc, I apologize. I was joking. the joke was severalfold: several posters, like young snitch, LeeHo and devincf complain incessantly about the "fear mongering on the board"; other posters, like ParadeRest, are accused of fear mongering because they post about violent incidents in the neighborhood; finally, random individuals who post about violent incidents in which they've been involved are often supported or attacked by people on this board - either encouraged to tell their story or stampeded for telling it -- as such, I posted the taser glove how-to as a tongue-in-cheek joke in light of these general trends I've observed. perhaps that was in extremely poor taste.
    if anyone took offense, I genuninely apologize.
  • nice one :D when you do it...its tongue in cheek..other people are racist...and a nice apology wipes the slate clean...
    and you find the Borat movie funny..lol
    a perfect example of why I won't let some cyberspace persona define me
    you can't even define yourselves..of course this is only another cyberspace perception
  • its funny when you make fun of everyone. but when you exclusively make fun of one group, thats just racist.
  • Emily, I thought your response to my post was spot on, and I see your point about language.
    Thalia the more you right, the more you sound like Kmom. You're getting increasingly defensive and lashing out more and more. Try reasoned debate, it works great!
  • Thalia, I'll have to disagree with you on one thing--the Borat movie was hilarious. :lol:
  • escap wrote: Thalia, I'll have to disagree with you on one thing--the Borat movie was hilarious. :lol:
    She hasn't even seen it, so her opinion on it is kind of irrelevant, no?
  • Steve..have no idea who/what the Kmom reference is about
    Please highlight where I'm being defensive or unreasonable.. :) .i certainly don't have anything to be defensive about...maybe getting a bit impatient
    AW-Although what i find humourous about that thread is the fact that every gets zapped. I don't think that's an accurate discription of racism.
    "its funny when you make fun of everyone. but when you exclusively make fun of one group, thats just racist."
    Carnivore..you are right...my opinion is irrelevant because I've not seen the movie...however the commercials just don't stimulate my interest..it doesn't look like my kind of humour..lol
    Sacha Noam Baron Cohen uses his racist character, Borat, to reveal the racism of our politicians, neighbors, and other real people that Borat interacts with. People usually sue Sacha Noam Baron Cohen after their racism is revealed in a candid, televised conversations that they believed would only air in Kazakhstan, but actually air in their own diverse country, the USA, to offend millions of viewers. Borat is a great tool for ripping hoods off of America's in-the-closet Klu Klux Klan members.
  • I'm curious to how many people think that this original post is racist, xenophobic, etc, enjoy listening to Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, old time Howard Stern and think, or thought, they're funny. I for one support Rosie O' Donnel on this one.
