yoga instructor for physical therapy?

cythren
edited November -1 in Prospect Heights
I injured my back about three weeks ago, and have really bad sciatica. I can't stand up or walk without limping and having lots of pain. I'm walking like a penguin!

After talking with my doctor, a chiropractor, an acupuncturist, a massage therapist and doing a lot of research on this condition, I learned that what I need to do to recover is physical therapy and exercise.

I'm looking for a yoga instructor who would be interested in working with me one-on-one for a few weeks or months until I am well enough to join group classes. Does anyone have any recommendations? Someone who has some experience working with people with back problems?

  • I might. I will email her and if she's interested, I'll send you her info.
  • Sorry, cythren, I heard back from my friend/yoga teacher. She's already booked up with private clients.

Hope you find a good one and feel better
  • My partner occasionally visits these boards and directed me to this particular thread.

Cythren, that's awful. Does your doctor or chiropractor know the cause, I mean what exactly is irritating the Sciatic nerve? As you probably know from your research, that's the tricky thing about Sciatica-- the root of it can be a number of things. I've just completed my yoga teaching certification and learned in our anatomy classes that pin-pointing what the condition is that is causing the flare-up will determine what to focus on when sequencing a lesson.

I'm glad to hear that you've decided to remedy it with yoga. I have classmates whose Sciatica has not flared up since they've had a consistent yoga practice. And I give you a whole lot of credit for being pro-active about it. Usually when you're in pain, the last thing you want to do is move!

Definitely PM me if you'd like to talk about lessons. This is one of the things that I've wanted to specialize in as a yoga teacher-- helping students with conditions of chronic pain. My training is in vinyasa, but I could put together a practice for you that's more about static poses and breathing into them. As you develop strength and flexibility in the right areas and your symptoms become less severe, we could gradually incorporate the vinyasa flow.

Anyway, I hope to hear from you. If not, I wish you well on your yogic journey to wellness.

    Oh, and happy holidays!
  • Hi Bendy Broad -
I'll send you a pm with my email and we can talk privately.
