BONITAS II — Brooklynian

BONITAS II

http://www.clintonhillblog.com/?p=224#respond

I haven't been yet, might hit it up tonight, but was wondering if anyone else has been yet and what's the general opinion about Bonitas? I loved the Williamsburg location but with Pequana's (sp?), Castro's and Los Politos III I'm wondering how it'll do in this area.

Comments

  • I went on Friday night. I had the fish tacos, my beau had the fish burrito and we shared some guacamole and chips. All dishes were absolutely DELICIOUS, and they gave us an opening-night discount, too. Great vibe, totally packed and hopping with energy. Nice tilework all over the walls, too. We'll be going back very, very soon to try everything on the menu.
  • It knocks the socks off Pequena, by the way. Everything I've had there pales in comparison to the three dishes I tried at Bonita. And, as I've said before, I think Los Pollitos is totally bland. Never been to Castro's, though.
  • We went last night. For some reason we were seated right by the kitchen and bathrooms even though there were a few tables up by the front. The food was great though, definitely better than Pequeña. Although our chips and salsa did come after we got our entrees. Lots of people and families there around 7pm. Very tasty though, and not too expensive.
  • We've been three times already. Hands down the best Mexican food in the area. The tequilla menu is superb as well.
  • Phenomenal. Just went and had the pork enchiladas, which were the best I've ever had in my life. Killer Margarita as well. Great addition to Dekalb.
  • u also thought the best steak you ever had was in my apartment when i cooked costco ribeye on a castiron and sliced it to perfection at a pink wet medium rare....wait, are we talking about steak here? hahaha..
  • wifey & I had a good time there when we went.

Unrelated: are there any good (i.e., better than mediocre) Thai options around here? Been to T101 once and thought it was ok, not particularly good and bit greasy. Maybe we should try it again, I dunno. Is Myrtle Thai better?
  • I like a number of dishes from Myrtle Thai. Never been there but order delivery pretty often. The yellow curry and duck curry are both tasty, among others.
  • whoa, hate to put a damper on the love fest, but we went and thought it was mediocre at best. The only saving grace was the margarita piquante. I had some pork special that was a chunk of overcooked tough meat smothered in excessively spiced sauce. The guacamole was bland and pureed -- like something you could buy premade in the grocery store. Maria's Mexican, before they expanded was significantly better.
  • as a skeptic of ethnic restaurateurs who open up in yuppie nabes, i too am skeptical of bonitas ii. i doubt it comes close to what you can get in some places in LIC or astoria like tierras mexicanas, what you can get from the arepa lady or from red hook ballfields.

but if you're up for a not-too-authentic meal, i guess it can provide that easily.
  • For those of us that are fairly new to the nabe, can you post where restaurants, stores, etc are located so that we can check them out, too? I'm a Mexican food junkie and would love to try Bonitas II.

    whatever dude, i stand by the pork enchiladas. =;

in this instance..what yuppie nabe
  • I can to relate to the skeptics, but not enough to let it influence me. Pretty much all that matters to me is the actual dining experience. Went once and loved it, though could see that small menu and noisy crowd getting tiring down the road.

Regarding the other local Mexican places, I like Castro's, Pequena's is decent, too, but do not like Los Pollitos III at all. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion, obviously, and it's worth noting that I've read many posts from people who love Los Pollitos III. I am not among them, however.

Re: coming close to red hook ballfields or possibilities in LIC or Astoria Mexican - I can't walk to any of those places. Debating the merits of those places is better suited for their respective neighborhood bulletin boards, or chowhound, even.
  • Word.
Bonita's much better than any of the alternatives in the neighborhood.
  • I've gotta disagree. We went Friday night and I was generally disappointed. I had fish tacos, which were good, but not nearly as good as what you can get at Pequena's. Husband had the special--steak tacos. They were expensive and mediocre and, for whatever this is worth, tiny. I'm not looking for huge portions or anything, but for what they charged, we expected more than two tortillas and what probably was no more than 5 oz of grilled steak. Pequena offers more value for your dollar and tastier food. I'm glad both are in the neighborhood, but I'll continue to devote my Mexican restaurant dollars to Pequena.
  • no offense to anyone, but pequena is filthy dirty, slapshod, and gross. used to be a fan, not a fan anymore. i am really happy that bonita is here and based on the track record of the owners (diner, marlowe & sons), believe that they will someday (soon) get the service right and the food more consistent. the portions have been skimpy and the servers all need brain transplants. but prices and ambience are a treat, and at least they are TRYING!
  • :-& I second the "pequena is gross" sentiment.
  • Subject: bonitaII

never been to pequena but will say Bonita was sorely dissappointing- we were looking forward to a new easy place to grab a bite. We sat at hte bar and the bartender was busier with her hair and her friends at the end to pay attention to us. I had the fish tacos which were terrible- since when is the fish in fish tacos fried first! The guacamole was pretty good. Whatever my husband has was also unmemorable. All in all, it was a bummer.
  • Been to B-nita's once and thought it was fine, I like the bean dip at Pequena, but Castro's is hands down the best mexican around these parts.

OK, with all the varied opinions popping up on Bonitas, I'm going to qualify my initial post. First off, ltjbukem, I might have been exaggerating out of a guest's politeness regarding the Costco ribeye. They were in fact damn good but I'll still take a Luger's steak over them, sorry man. Second, I have never actually eaten pork enchiladas before. So these were in fact the best I've ever had, but perhaps there's an unreliable sample size. They still were damn good though. 8-[
  • Bonita is the fakers paradise. have a great time but just remember, if you want real mexican try Castros or many of the other real mex places in CH. there are a bunch on Murtle running on down into Bed Stuy. Castros is our hands down favorite. i find all of this Bonita support a little bit funny after having gone there myself and not digging the food, which included a cold and bland corn on the cob that we thought was supposed to be one of their gringo specialties.
  • I'm skeptical of any food critic who goes by a porn star name and isn't familiar enough with the nabe to know how to spell Myrtle. Sorry.
  • fine by me but i live on Myrtle and have for over ten years, it's called a typo. sorry to make you angry anyhow, didn't know you had so much invested in this restaurant.
  • My dad says "Moytuhl Ave".
