Utilities

If this has already been discussed, please just point me in the right direction.

My fiance and I are moving in next week (Underhill at Bergen), and I have NO idea who to contact for the following:

-Electric
-Gas
-Phone
-Cable (am I in a TW or a Comcast zone?)
-Internet (preferrably cable)

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Electric: Con Edison
    Gas: Keyspan
    Phone: Verizon or whoever.
Cable: You're in Cablevision land or yuo can get Direct TV or Dish (I've been very happy with Direct TV).
Internet: Cablevision has internet. I don't know how it is. I get DSL from Verizon.

Are you moving from far away. Because if you live in NYC it's all just the same old utilities companies you're used to (and you can probably just get your accounts moved). Except for Cablevision (which I dismissed as stupidly expensive).

Yeah, I'm moving from Minneapolis, hence the cluelessness.

    Thanks!
  • electric: http://www.coned.com/

Cable/Internet: You'll need to figure who services your black as it can vary street to street. Go to a site like http://1800OKCABLE.com and slap in your future zip code and it'll tell you the available provider.

    Gas should be Keyspan:http://www.keyspanenergy.com/
  • I've been using a cable modem for high speed online access from CableVision for a few years. Very good.

I agree that the cable internet service from Cablevision is good. Too bad it only comes with Cablevision cable. :x
  • Cablevision SUCKS... less channels, more money...

Direct TV is great. Awesome customer service. They are trying to steal "cable" subscribers so you might get a great deal. (I don't work for them by the way....)

I have Verizon for wireless, land and DSL... I love them too...

    Good luck and welcome!
  • My husband is the one who really loves DirecTV but what I like about it is the cheap TiVo we got. I LOOOOOVVVEE TiVo!

How the hell did you get the nonstandard emoticon?

It's in there, just click "view more emoticons"
  • Yes, it's the only emoticon that doesn't fit in the main list, though, so don't get your hopes up. I wonder how we could have more? We need :hearts: and :headdesk: .

It's actually not too hard to rig some script to substitute words and symbols with predefined images.
  • See now, we hate Verizon (my husband had some bad experiences with them in more than one service), dislike Cablevision for the TV part but love it for internet (and unfortunately you can't have one without the other), etc. To each his own, I guess.

It really depends on what you are looking for from your various services. We don't watch that much TV--not enough to justify the expense, anyway--so we just have the basic basic networks, for which Cablevision is fine (I just miss the channel guide more than anything). We use the internet a lot, so for us Cablevision was a good choice. And we don't even have a land line for phone, just the cells.

But if you're a tube-hound, it's probably worth investing in DirectTV or some such.
  • Don't get me started on TIVO... changed my life... so much that we upgraded to an HD....
  • I really like Cablevision - we have digital cable and get over 300 channels and it is less than $100 a month plus I love the on demand feature.
We did have Verizon DSL but have now switched (very recently) to Optimum Online which I had before and like much better than DSL.
On that same note are there any computer techies that can help me set up a wireless router to my cable and playstation game system? Or point me in the right direction?
  • I have Cablevision's Optimum Online Internet service. Without TV. It can be done. Every couple of months I have to tell a phone solicitor NO I DON'T WANT TELEVISION, but otherwise it's fine. I use Vonage for phone, and use Netflix for my movie fix. All is well, except for power outages/'net interruptions, when there is no 'net AND no phone.
  • stupid ass Jewish Hospital doesn't get DirectTV, is there away around something like that?

they wont let you put up a dish on a south-facing wall? or the roof?
  • I'm sure I can push the issue. I just made a phone call, and no was the answer which is the wrong answer.
  • hey... apparently to get the DirectTV with Tivo deal, which seems like a steal to me, you need to be connected to a land based phone line... does anyone know who I talk to for a land based phone line? I don't want fancy long distance packages or anything since i can use my cell for all of that, just a local number for ordering pizza and such.

i think like 90% of my posts thus far have involved pizza.
  • I know for local calls and blocking out going long distance (if you choose) verizon has like a 9.50 a month plan...

I agree. I like Cablevision as well, and the On Demand feature is pretty good. I do, however, hope they expand their movie offerings a bit in the future. Caveat: I'm not a huge TV junkie and maybe TW and DirectTV are better, but I really wouldn't know.

Plus, I'm VERY happy with Optonline as my ISP.

And overall, I have found Cablevision's customer service to be quite good (although it appears that some people have had some bad experiences).
  • I still watch television by snatching invisible waves out of the air with a pair of extendable metal wands positioned (just so) above the set. Does that make me a hipster? Old school? Spartan? Or just too cheap for superduper electrovision service?

Yeah, I read a lot of books.
  • Subject: dish laws

Those Jewish Hospital owners kind of suck it hard. Here's the deal: apparently building owners are legally required to allow you to have a dish. http://www.ccfj.net/FCClaw.htm
  • Good to know. It's actually the real estate guy, who does suck hard but once I settle I am going to raise hell for a dish, ha. In the meantime i'll stick to my antenna. So I moved into the hospital this weekend, bright blinking gentrification bldg, but there seem to be some cool ppl there.
  • We have this package deal with Cablevision for phone, internet and tv for like $100 a month. I'm happy with it! (No, I don't work for them.... ) The phone is VoIP (like Vonage with unlimited long distance) so that's cool, and the price is sure right!
