searching for chinese broccoli and good veggie dumplings
i've been on a mission lately, finding a local PS restaurant that serves *good* chinese broccoli steamed with shrimp or scallops, and yummy steamed veggie dumplings. and it should be delivered easily.
thus far...
--red hot was very good, with the largest servings and really good shrimp. nice, non generic dumplings. but service when ordering on the phone was difficult, and they charged an extra $1 for the broccoli because they said it was more expensive (though on other places on the menu it was the same price)
--china one. no chinese broccoli
-vegetarian delight: no chinese broccoli
--uncle liao. always nice to deal with, had the broccoli. easy ordering, but not as big a portion. dumplings were the gummy kind.
--joy kitchen. (NEVER AGAIN)
--master wok (i no longer go there because of the cockroach)
--hing lung--yes, i know they are in prospect heights, but i was driving back from work and i stopped in. so far they are top of the list of my challenge with the biggest portions, no extra charge, and interestingly seasoned dumplings (though they were a bit chewy)
anyone care to join me on my journey?

master wok. in the bathroom on the wall.

How about Number One Garden? I don't know how good the veggie dumplings are, but I had the regular ones tonight and they were fine....fast and cheap, too
-
i know you love that place, and every time you say that i order from them and i'm never happy with it. sigh.
tonight i tried tofu on 7th. dumplings sucked beyond reason. the steamed stuff was overcooked and the fortune cookie sub par. -
Where is Master Wok located, pray tell.
-
Ah, well. I only order a few basic things (steamed dumplings (used to get fried ones, sometimes still do), sesame noodles, general's chicken (or shrimp) and sometimes shrimp with garlic sauce.
I've had lots of people over my house ordering in from them as well.
I like the manager/owner (Celia) and that they don't give me a hard time placing such a small order for delivery. The delivery guy is fast and nice (but I forgot his name and I'm embarrassed to ask again).
I don't eat anywhere with Tofu in the name. Blech. -
try hunan delight.
but yeah, hing lung in PH is one of my favorites for local chinese food. I like to stop in and explain that I want something steamed, but spicier, etc, and they do a really great job in fast time. -

i did, actually. i don't remember the outcome but if i didn't write it down it wasn't favorable. i know everyone loves it there, but it never does is for me.

never occurred to me that hing lung could have good food. i wish they delivered to PS -
Have you tried Empire Kitchen on 5th Ave?
I wasn't crazy about their dumplings...too much dumpling, not enough stuffing. However, their veggies are outstanding! I typically get steamed prawns with chinese broccoli and bok choy, and I LOVE it. Huge shrimp, good portion size, and a large selction of chinatown veggies, things I have never heard of before, but enjoy trying (chinese zucchini, multiple bok choys, etc...). I would definitely give them a whirl, and delivery is simple. They also have excellent noodle soups. -
Any idea of where you can get huge steamed buns packed with vegetables -- no pork or fake meat -- outside of Flushing?

brooklyn chinatown?

this may not help you directly, but hunan wok on 7th ave had, until about a year or so ago, what were undoubtedly some of the best vegetable dumplings in the city. they were called mixed watercress dumplings, they made them there (most chinese restaurants buy frozen ones in bulk), they were wrapped in a thin, delicate noodle and stuffed with a bright geen filling of chopped watercress, i think some spinach and some seasonings (garlic?). i believe they're still on the menu, but they no longer serve them. i don't know why.
i'm only mentioning this because maybe if enough people stop by and ask for them, they'll reinstate them. they were fabulous and are missed.
also, just on the subject of dumplings, gen, the japanese restaurant on washington and st. marks in p. hts. has some of the best shumai i've ever had, stuffed with large, tasty chunks of shrimp. superb. -
i'm thinking this craving may deserve a trip to brooklyn chinatown

Indeed; that's what I do. I'd settle for a place nearby where I could get the ingredients, as it takes no time to make it how I like it at home.
PS: Hing Lung @ Vanderbilt & Park, as per O.P., does indeed have generous portions of Chinese Broccoli and dumplings of fair quality and is my favorite place so far in PH/PS to get cantonewyorkese. But I'd still rather steam stuff at home most days, if only I could pick it up on the way home from work. How can we claim to have modern civilization without a single Oriental grocer in the area? -
I love Red Hot on 7th Avenue (my favorite chinese restaurant in the area) and never have any trouble ordering over the phone with them-if their broccoli is that much better and you like their food, I would just pay the extra dollar.
I also like Number 1 Garden over in Windsor Terrace, very good
