and really, this isn't about prudishness, it's about common decency
Your conception of 'common decency' is somewhere on a cultural spectrum, and would be considered prudish by some and whoreish by others. And there are representatives of most cultures on the planet in this town. My point is simply that the places where there are more so-called degrading representations of bodies on display are where you'll generally find women more empowered than here, and where there's more of your 'common decency' there's generally more oppression of women.

True enough, but there are also societies that are very open about pornography where seperate train cars exist for women so that they aren't constantly groped - or worse. Eh, I'm pretty comfortable with the balance here; you can get pretty much anything you want (uh, so I've heard) you just might need to poke around a bit - and if you really want it, I reckon you will. I'm also fine with the fact that I can go to a bodega with my 6 y.o. daughter and not have to answer questions about the copy of Rapeman she saw on the shelf.
  • what did you expect I just got up from my sleep, damn mail man woke me up and I'm posting :p.

Damned straight! But it's not a sock puppet!
  • I like the Lama, because it freaks me out.

    Just sayin'....

  • Ok, let's have some fun: Describe a hypothetical avatar that would cross the line, or give a (non-visual) example of something well-known that would not be tolerated.

Let's say I was a big fan of goatse (you can look it up if curious) could I throw that image up there and just tell everyone to deal? Would I be backed up by the mods?

i was going to give a list of things that would, or would not, be ok. but i see where you're going with this: what crosses the line? who decides? when is it acceptable? drano, we're not talking about sallee mann.

more so, this isn't an argument i'm involving myself in, because it's a wholly different--albeit related--one than my original objection: i don't like that avatar, i find it offensive, and i want it gone. the rest is just fodder and takes away from my point that *i* find it objectionable, demeaning, degrading, and just plain vile.

"mypassword"'s avatar is the way he/she would like to be portrayed, which is curious considering the fact that this particular thread is about muggings and aforementioned poster seems to think that a stack of us are racist.

if this thread is moving in the direction of how people see us, and why, and how that affects us in our communities, than the avatar conversation is a part of that.
My Avatar has nothing to do with how I "like to be portrayed" - its just a bit of fun. Come on, look at the various Avatars on this forum. Do you really think every single member wants people to "see" him or her in that way? Sure, your Avatar is serious enough and promotes your business - but others are more light-hearted or plain ridiculous. Get a grip, love.

it's disgusting, it's juvenile, it's degrading, and the fact that the mods it completely objectifies women
I have to suspect that it's a photo of password/princess, but that she doesn't have the gumption to put her face out there as well.
I'm a feminist. Why would I want to objectify myself? Believe me: if I wanted to put my own naked pic out there on the internet - I would. This is just a fun little pic that I pulled from a website. If some of you find the idea of a woman on all fours wearing spike heels offensive and "disturbing" - then I guess your sex lives can't be all that much fun.

I know that people either like/hate or don't care about my avatar....just like every other avatar here. C'est la vie.
Your signature line and your endless pictures of your scantily-clad self are not what I'd call "inoffensive to all". This is definitely a case of the pot calling the kettle.........
  • Get your quotes straight.
  • WhyFi wrote: Get your quotes straight.
Yeah the quotes got messed up in that post but I'm sure you get my general gist.

Right, 'cause there's no difference at all between a photo of someone in yoga wear doing yoga, and one of a woman with her breasts hanging down on all fours in nothing but pumps.

    Specious argument there.

Who votes I change to avatars of scantily clad me?
  • Could we please keep the discussion of the avatar over in the other thread where it got moved to?

I don't care about your gist - don't put the words of someone else in my mouth. Fix it.

That would be fine with me. As long as you have a hot body.

With nothin' but your DALIs? ME!!!

I'm going to split this thread and move the avatar parts over to the Lounge discussion where it belongs.

    No.

  • You'll be pleased to notice that I've changed my Avatar pic to an image I'm sure you'll find more palatable: a white woman.

Very funny. Of course, as a man, you have no idea what feminism is: you cannot live it or understand it.
  • here's what i think: stop feeding the trolls.

all we are doing is asking this asswipe to continue with juvenile antics, and a pseudo-pc agenda.

    done.

I'm not a troll, but you are a prude.

Does anyone remember the whole Janet Jackson "nipplegate" fiasco and white America's disgust with a flash of the black female body?

Right, because the race of the woman crawling on all fours with her breasts hanging down was SO OBVIOUSLY the issue.

This is obvious trollery. I'm locking this thread and hoping one of the admins gets around to logging in soon.

sorry. yes, I'm a mod, so I'm invading this locked thread. I think it's really pathetic that you swapped a "sexy" perhaps "pornographic" photo for what you obviously want to portray as a sizist photo of a white woman. it's really awesome that you're so eager to portray your prejudices. I can't wait to see how you deal with asian woman.

How is that a cop out? Now we have two threads, one about his stupid avatars and one about the mugging issue. This is exactly why we have the split topic option. Both conversations are still part of our community.
