Subject: why isn't there more activity on this site?
I am moving from Park Slope to Ditmas Park (hopefully) and am wondering why there isn't more activity on this site. Are people not into the neighborhood? Is there so little going on that there is nothing to talk about? I would love to get to know more about the area as well as the people, so I think we should get the word out about this forum!Comments

How come you're moving to Ditmas?

How come you're moving to Ditmas?
I am moving to Ditmas because I was ready to buy a place and found the area to be the nicest place I could live for what I could afford. Truthfully, I am completely over Park Slope anyway. Ditmas seemed like a nice mix of people, close to the park and a good train. Plus I got a great place for a good price. I am young enough to still want some stuff going on, but old enough that I don't need a scene. -
If you don't mind me asking, what kind of rent are they asking in Ditmas for 1 and 2 bedroom apartments?

I am not sure. I purchased a 2 bedroom co-op (well, they accepted my offer and I am working on the rest). You can check out craigslist to see how much it is to rent a place in Ditmas. -
It's tricky- it takes a critical mass of users in order to have the content here that will draw more people to the site. Also, the 2 most frequented boards, Prospect Heights and Park Slope, both have associated blogs (Daily Heights and Daily Slope respectively) that draw people and channel them to the message boards. Ultimately, it takes boots on the ground in the neighborhood to actually make worthwhile observations and create content that people want to read. So far, none of the people who have been committed to the other message boards lives in the areas covered by this board. Once you move, if you're interested in creating content for the site, and/or starting a blog to direct more traffic here, I'm sure that dailyheights admin would be totally supportive of that.

Thanks so much for your reply. I would love to do that, even if I am not sure exactly how to do so. Would I PM one of the site administrators about that? I probably won't be moving for a couple of months, but would like to try to get some activity on the board prior to my move.

I think Ditmas Park is also expensive now re: rentals especially because there aren't many of them! It's great that you were able to buy something.
I also think that Windsor Terrace and Kensington have sort of 'aligned' as sister neighborhoods and Ditmas Park and Flatbush are sort of far from Kensington (although some may think of them all together).
It took awhile for the separate Park Slope message board to get off the ground because people were so used to the Prospect Heights one so it will probably take awhile for this one, and others.
Also... (so many thoughts!) this board is placed so far down from the others (not sure why) that you might come to the Brooklyn forums and not even know that it's here!
I hear you about Park Slope. I lived there for about five years and although I miss some things about it, it's just gotten too 'too' for words. Some people act so privileged to live there which either I didn't notice or didn't experience until I left! (or else it changed in those five years, I'm not sure which.)

Welcome! We just bought in the neighborhood (in Nov.) for basically the same reasons. I think the boards are a little quiet, because, well... its a quiet neighborhood. I think people are into the neighborhood, but its a pretty lowkey place. The more I'm here, the more that sort of lowkeyedness becomes part of the appeal of the place though.
Anyway, once again, welcome.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I am looking forward to the neighborhood being lowkey. Also would like a sense of community and I think this could be a great forum for communication amongst neighbors.

There is another on-line group - the Flatbush Family Network - on Yahoo groups. Its a bit more active, but its also a bit focused on young families, so you end up with lots of "ballet classes - 4-6 yr old"-type of posts. That being said, there are interesting things on there for those without children - yoga classes and the occasional free furniture. We don't have children, but are on the list.
I think the community sense is slowly building up amongst the younger new comers (I include myself in that - same as you - "young enough to still want some stuff going on, but old enough that I don't need a scene"). The folks at the Farm on Adderly are very nice and there seems to be something of a "local vibe" being built up there. (Its probably a bit too expensive to really become very local-y.) But Cornerstone - good live music - on Cortelyou and Club 773 on Coney Island are starting points. I like Cornerstone quite a bit, although it has an odd smell on occasion. -
Hey, Mixergirl! I lived in Ditmas Park for 3 years and miss it. Have you checked out Vox Pop yet? When they opened up, all of a sudden people in the area started meeting each other. Also, during the warmer months, everyone starts to come out of the woodwork.

Congrats on your new place! Good luck! -
I haven't moved yet. I have walked around the neighborhood and saw a lot of places that looked cool. I will probably be in the hood within the next two months. Can't wait!

I too bought a place in Ditmas Park West after living in Park Slope for a number of years. Best decision I ever made. I really like Ditmas and Cortelyou is coming along very nicely. Welcome to the neighborhood.

Thanks for the welcomes everybody. Hopefully you will see me in the hood around 4/1. Who knew that buying an apt. was such an annoying process???

It's almost as much fun as going to the dentist! -
Hey, I live on Ocean Ave and Caton. Is this the right forum for me? Anybody else in this neighborhood?
