New to PH/Crown Heights (Park Pl and Classen) - help?

Hi all! We just moved to PH/Crown Heights (whatever you want to call it, I prefer PH) yesterday and are getting acquainted. Can anyone provide some recommendations on places in the neighborhood to eat, play, shop, etc? As you can see from the title, we're on Park Place and Classen. LOVE the neighborhood--we just moved from Long Island City (previously the Upper East Side) and are amazed by the space, the price, and the friendliness of the neighborhood.

So, sorry if I've insulted anyone by calling my corner "Prospect Heights" if it is, in fact, Crown Heights, but I'd love recommendations... especially on places that deliver to our area, since we're stuck at home unpacking.

Thanks! :D

  • Its more insulting that you can't spell CLASSON!

Way to welcome someone to the neighborhood, King.

Hellodarling, I'd encourage you to spend a little time digging around the archives here, especially on the Crown Heights board. There's a ton of stuff in the area and I think you'll find lots of good info has already been posted. And welcome!
  • King--sorry for the misspelling! Apollonia--Thanks for the recommendation! I may or may not be playing around on this site at work... I assume most of us are though!
  • Hello, Darlin.
I actually live within a block of you. I call it either PH or CH depending on my mood and who I am talking to-- cab drivers, PH. folks on this side of washington, CH.

we have some decent options for takeout and stuff. definitely visit Gen, at Washington and St. Marks. They have the best sushi around. Thai-- Mango in Park Slope delivers to me, but I am a block closer, so call them to verify. They are ok... but when I am feeling lazy and wanting Thai mediocre is ok. Pizza I like Antonios. Some people here don't like em. I do, but then again, I get the gf to flirt with em alot.

overall i would say its a great area. great neighbors. A family of moose above me. Heated like little Trinidad. What more could you want.

    Welcome to the block.
  • Jayce, you're amazing! Good to know that Antonio's delivers, I keep reading about them on these boards. So far the area's great, though the "we don't take credit cards" prevalence kinda sucks (I do carry some cash, but after spending $30 on the tolls to and from IKEA in Elizabeth, not so much). Again, thanks!

(Oh, and totally understand about the flirting--I'm the gf, and my boyfriend has a tendency to shamelessly prod me to pour on the sugar! )
  • Check out Deacon Blue (Grand and Prospect) and Saje (Franklin and Park)

You can do a search on these boards on either one of them for more info.

    Welcome!
  • hi,

i live just about a block up from you on Classon and Prospect Pl.

    Delivery:

Sushi: Gen or Tatsu II (i believe both menus are on menupages.com, if not Tatsu I is there and you can ask them for the ph # of their new location)

coffeehouse/sandwiches: the Usual or Deacon Blue (they make an amazing burger and are so nice!) Saje is great, but doesn't deliver. Serves gorilla coffee which is worth the block walk in my opinion

Pizza: Pino's or Antonio's (both on menupages.com) I find pino's regular pizza to be too greasy, but their mozzarella and basil is pretty good as is their white pizza.

Chinese: Hunan Wok and Mr.Wonton in Park Slope both deliver (and are on menupages.com)

Also, Bob Law's Seafood, Noona, and possibly the new Mexican on Vanderbilt deliver to us as well. So take a walk up and down the block and pick up all the menu's.

The thiftway pharmacy on your block is great! hours aren't very long and they aren't open on sunday, but they are very well stocked and the people who work there are very friendly and helpful.

As for the "danger". I've never felt in any way threatened by anyone...with that in mind still be vigilant as everyone must everywhere in nyc not just the hood.

hope that you have as good an experience as i have!
  • Oh yeah, you have to go grab a menu from Island Village too - YUM.
  • Y'all are awesome. I've only been on this board for about six hours (and in the neighborhood for 24) and love the community spirit on here... yeah, it sounds a bit cheesy, but seriously, thanks! I'm always open to meeting neighbors, so if anyone wants to get together for some drankin' or whatever, PM me :)

(And yes, I did just say y'all. I'm originally from Texas, I'm allowed!)
  • Welcome Hello - I think you will really enjoy it here. I will add one more to the delivery option - El Gran Castillo is a great spanish restaurant that delivers.

Hard to go wrong with a cuban and rice and beans from Gran Castillo.... mmmm.... also, the rotis (among other things) at Ginger Root are really good.
  • The flirting gf here. Welcome! And yes, if you flirt with the guys at Antonio's, they'll throw extra basil on that pie. We're all about having a fresh mozzarella and eggplant pizza delivered on lazy evenings.

So, once you've got those boxes unpacked and you wanna get out of the apartment, you should try Aliseo on Vanderbilt. It's super cozy and a perfect place for your first romantic dinner in your new nabe. Flirting with the waiter can win you tastes of all sorts of wines. Flirt with him in Italian and he'll bring after-dinner drinks.

Even though we mostly do take-out from Gen, it's actually a cute place that looks like it would be really nice to eat at. I'm picky about Japanese food and I think that they're not only pretty solid in terms of quality, but add a creative twist without going over-board. They do sake tasting parties too.

Love Soda as a bar, but as you'll see on the boards, food service there can be slow.

Franny's on Flatbush is delicious if you want a sit-down, pretty close to authentic Italian pizza and a nice (sometimes overpriced) glass of wine.

And Tom's on Washington Ave of course. Don't let the line on Saturday morning intimidate you. It moves quickly AND they come around to bring you coffee, cookies, and orange slices as you wait. LOVE them.

    Hope that helps!
  • Love you guys. This board is amazing - I have a ridiculous amount of MenuPages pages (err...yeah) open looking at everything *laugh* Though I keep reading about safety issues during the warmer months, I'm so excited to get to Prospect Park during the longer days!

Gen is much better when you eat in - we live just a block away from them, but the time that the food steams in the delivery containers... eh... the tempura is no longer light and crisp, veggies are a little more limp, etc, etc...

So true. That's why when we do take-out, we mainly do sushi. Oh, and steamed shumai because they travel well.

Hellodarling, for what it's worth, I felt pretty safe here this past summer.
  • I second the recommendation for Gen. My wife and I usually go for a sit-down meal and have always had positive experiences. The soups, tempura, and sushi are all excellent. I'm hoping that once all of those condos nearby become populated more restaurants will follow.
