catss: the good and the bad

good news:

a month after i adopted my second cat (jolene), delilah and her are getting along like two peas in a pod. they play together, share food, and jolene likes to cuddle up next to delilah. both cats were in need of homes and from the 'hood.

bad news:
every couple of nights, i hear what sounds like the most horrific cat fight in the yards behind my apartment. it is usually too dark out by the time it happens to see, but while walking around the south side of the block i found a cat outside. i've also seen one in an enclosed yard during the day --in the lot it seems they are renovating the building. this is on the south east corner of washington + park on the intererior of the lot, facing the yards in the back. any advice on how to what to do? the fights just sound really, really, really awful.

It's probably foreplay.

Seriously. I used to live over in Ditmas Park where there's a huge feral cat community. This sort of thing is disturbing at first-- I know, they totally sound like they're going to kill each other, but in my experience, it usually had a very different ending. An ending that usually involved me crawling under the porch a few months later to round up a litter of kittens to be adopted.

Jolene and Delilah are totally cute. They're lucky to have found you.

Now, I am down with s&m but this kinda foreplay sounds a little on the non-consensual side. So I shouldn't worry?

Oh, I know! That worried me too. And initially, I would chase the thug cats away from the female who lived under my porch. But I finally thought, who am I to try to change the ways of the animal kingdom?

It's cat sex, for sure.

I remember being in college and we adopted a stray. We also had our own permanent cat and then several others who knew where the food was and would wander in and out (I was living in an apartment in AZ - where we kept our doors open at times and knew all of the neighbors).

A male cat came in and started having hot, hot cat sex with our adopted stray right in our living room. The noise was AWFUL.

My roommate started screaming and getting hysterical, and forced me (I say forced me because if you ever heard that girl whine and scream, you'd do whatever just to shutherthefuck up!) to tear them apart.

Little did I know that the male cat has sort of spikes on his penis that come out during sex and that the female cat latches on to him....so pulling them apart was actually painful as opposed to the hot, hot cat sex foreplay noises.

Neither one of those cats ever gave me some affection again.

Since you hate the thought of cats even existing, perhaps you would be happier confining yourself to topics in which they aren't the subject.

Brooklynleather, how do your cats react to the sounds of the cats outside? Mine get upset when they hear that kind of thing.

Good question! I hear the sounds of what I *thought* was cat fighting most nights outside my window. Maybe it's just them having sex? But then would the cats be screwing every single night like that?

I don't hate them, they just scare me and creep me out a little. We have several strays on my block and I actually feed them (is this bad?) I love all animals but I would not want a cat living in my home permanently because they scare me. Believe it or not I've actually fostered cats before. A friend of mine does animal rescue and there were a couple of situations where he had no space for a cat and needed somebody to look after it for a few weeks until a permanent home was found. I was happy to oblige and just tried not to get too scared when the cat stared and stared at me with those beautiful but spooky green eyes...
