um, whoa. way to be hostile toward the community affairs detective. don't you think the NYPD, especially given the distrust many in the community have toward them, needs someone dedicated to "being nice" and "kissing everybody's butt" while answering questions and assisting neighbors? and do you really think that job is worth so little as to garner less pay and recognition? would you really want to have to be nice to everyone you encountered?
so what's your real beef? -

Oh, so wow... in addition to your police scanner you have copies of peoples job descriptions too, huh? Damn you are well connected. -
oooh, wait... I just figured it out.
She's stepping on YOUR toes. She's actually willing to call people back with information that is helpful and relevant and suddenly you are out of a gig. I am sure you can find other ways to be useful. Don't worry. -
Frankly, I'm glad there's *someone* at the 77th who's willing to speak with me, hear my concerns, give me some information, and not give me some bullshit "don't worry" line about a crime that happened ten feet from my apartment.
-
I'm glad she keeps you happy by acting like she cares and listening to your concerns but I hope that realize there is little she can do after that. She doesn't go out on patrol, she doesn't make arrests and she rarely passes any information on to the cops who do actually go on patrol, address conditions and make arrests.
jayce, it's common knowledge that Det McLean and Det Ratton (who is on loan to Patrol Borough Brooklyn North) are 1st grade. A simple google search will show you that a 3rd grade makes just a little more than a P.O., a 2nd grade makes Sgt pay and a 1st grade makes Lt. pay. I find it sickening that there are hard working detectives solving crimes and catching bad guys that don't ever get a grade bump but she did. Her position does not deserve that type of pay. -

okay, then, what changes are being made in the NYPD so that these detectives CAN be of assistance to investigating detectives? or, if you object so much to the existence of easy-to-approach detectives, what is being done to assist not-so-easy-to-approach detectives in being easier to approach? I don't think your beef is with detective mclean. your beef is with the NYPD and I'd love to know how you think they can fix the problem you see, and keep the public feeling like someone gives a shit.

Sounds like the answer is for you to put in for the next community affairs opening, so you too could get paid as a D1 for just being nice. -

Okay. It's obvious that you know a hell of a lot more than I do about who gets paid what, and it's obvious that you have strong feelings about how the community relations officers are paid compared to the detectives. And honestly, those strong feelings are making you come off sounding a more than a bit pissy.
However, I do realize that you're probably also trying to be helpful, as angry as you might be about what community relations officers are paid. Thank you for that, seriously. It's easy to get heated in online discussions but I hope that eventually you'll find that it's not the best way to get people to see your point.
The thing is that it doesn't keep me happy for her to act like she cares. It might help me be more informed -- if she is able to tell me anything more about what happened than I've been able to find out so far and any information at all would certainly more than the person who answered the phone gave me. I'm mainly interested in finding out whether they have any idea how these guys got in and whether they had any weapons. If I find out anything about how they got in I want to get after my building management to do something about it. If there's anything I might be able to do to keep this from happening in my building again, I want to do it. I don't plan to live in fear in my home and I'm sure as hell not moving. I like it here. And Jeebus, it took me almost six years to get a rent-stabilized apartment! I'm not going ANYWHERE.
It definitely sounds like the one you mentioned upthread might be the same incident. If there's anything more you can tell me but don't feel comfortable saying on the board, I'd really appreciate it if you could PM me.
This question's for everyone: If I find out there was no police report, should I report it myself? I do have the picture of the sign in the elevator, which was gone by this morning. If nothing else, I want to be sure it's been reported. -
Alafairnadia, you are correct. I have no problem with Det. McLean but with the system of rewards that the NYPD brass uses. By the way, you should keep in mind that there are 2 different categories of detectives in the NYPD, "investigative" and "specialist". Det. McLean is a Det specialist which means that she has no involvement in investigating cases. Her office is seperate from the investigative detectives who work upstairs. Another example of Detective Specialists are Emergency Services personell. They certainly earn their pay in my book by doing a job that few people would want to do.
That being said and moving on...
No, you cannot report this crime if you were not the victim. If the victim wants to file a report all he/she has to do is go into the precinct or call 911. If the victim decides to not report it or not be cooperative (uncooperative victims lead to many undocumented crimes) that is up to him/her. -

What crimes can you report if you're not the victim? I get that I may be too far removed from this myself to report it, but there must be instances (bigger crimes, I'd imagine) in which you should call the cops -- like, say you hear something about a murder that wasn't reported. -

but that's an issue, no, for the NYPD to sort out? and I do think you have a valid beef with the NYPD about it - investigative and specialist detectives should work together - at all levels. (I know vague bits about this, though not NYPD spec, b/c I used to be a crim. defense atty in texas) I guess I don't know what to do about it, who to complain to, etc. and, unfortunately/fortunately, folks like det. mclean make folks like me happy - she answers the phone, listens to my concerns, and calls me back. I understand that investigative detectives don't have the time for any of this - including the nice part - srsly, I'm always shocked at how nice detectives are when I talk to them when I'm a witness to a crime, cause if I were them, I'd be sick of people like me, being all "uh, I think I heard 5 shots, but it might have been 3. and I'm totally certain the person was wearing a hoodie. or maybe a puffy coat? oh no, I'm not sure!" (I've only had this experience twice, but still, both times have been remarkable in both how exhausted the detectives were (obvi. overworked) and how patient they were with my inability to give a coherent or helpful account as to what occurred.)
so what to do? it seems to me that a specialist like det. mclean should be useful - someone to filter the neighborhood concerns and be nice to everyone and help active investigations. how should we try to help with this? or do you think we don't need these folks? -
This is the first I'm hearing of Det Mclean being made 1st Grade. I've also never heard a bad thing about her. The Police dept has many positions and all of them dont necessarily revolve around fighting with bad guys. Who really cares what she makes and what she does? Shes been working there a long time and has most defenitely paid her dues.
With regards to reporting crimes,ie: (complaint report) you must be the actual victim. Thats not to say you cant call 911 and report an incident. But a physical complaint report must have a victim. -
That's horrible. A relative lives in what's considered to be a great, safe building in Clinton Hill, and was robbed at gunpoint while at the mailbox at around 8 pm on a weeknight. She's still there--can't beat the rent--but you can never let your guard down, no matter how comfortable you feel in your environment.

Hmm. Our building is predominantly African-American and I've only seen a couple of other white people around, for what it's worth.
Thanks for clearing that up, Appolonia ...I smelled the stink on that statement as well.
And the moral to the story is....don't let young African-American males in the building unless accompanied by authorized personnel??????
