Favorite Thrift Stores? — Brooklynian

Favorite Thrift Stores?

I was wondering which thrift stores you preferred. Both for clothing and home type items and furniture. I am not familiar with too many, and I wondered if I wasn't missing some.

Thanks for your suggestions and advice!

  • Housing Works is great (none in Brooklyn, but there are a ton in Manhattan) for furnishings, and some clothing, too.

Beacon's Closet isn't as cheap as Salvation Army or Goodwill, but their clothes are often the cream of the crop -- at least for women's wear.

You can often find better men's stuff at Salvation Army or Goodwill, that is, if your taste runs a on the more "dressed up" side (my beau's does, and he's always finding great ties, suits and shirts). He hits the ones on Atlantic; Livingston & Bond; Bedford in W'burg; and Quincy off Classon in Bed-Stuy.
  • Also, we hit up the Hell's Kitchen flea market on Sundays. Absolutely great for jewelry, furniture, decor, and clothing.
  • Domsey's on Broadway, I think near Hewes. Goodwill (or is it Salvation?) on Fulton near Franklin. This is for clothes. I find that the good furniture is picked through immediately in thrift shops. There are a couple of inexpensive antique stores on Marcy near Jefferson, if you want decent furniture.
  • Anyone know about Re-Pop? Any reviews on that place? I have heard that one brought up.

Where are the Hell Kitchen's ones? :)

    Thanks so much!
  • Here's some more info: http://www.hellskitchenfleamarket.com/ I go mainly to the one at 39th (9th/10th), but have been to the others which are still worth checking out.

Haven't been to Re-Pop yet, but I definitely want to check it out. It's a crime that I haven't made it over yet -- I used to live on Washington and I'm still only a few blocks away now!
  • Don't forget Blue Bass Vintage on Classon and Dekalb. It has a great selection of women's clothes.
  • Re-Pop's on the same street as Mojito's and Reign and has A LOT of cool stuff. They carry everything from clothing to furniture and everything in between. You can find some really interesting and different things there and it's really worth checking out.

Blue Bass is another good one but they only have vintage clothing.
  • I don't know as I'd call Re-Pop a "thrift store" rather than a vintage clothing-and-antique store. But I love it -- the owner is an absolute sweetheart, and some of the prices on things are pretty reasonable.
  • Subject: Best thirft store

Housingworks has finally came to Brooklyn. The new store is open and ready for donations, volunteers and shopping :) We are located at 122 montague in BK heights and have recieved a very warm and excited welcome from the neighborhood. Thanks Brooklyn!!!!
  • Thanks, everyone! I am glad to see stores around. I am just thinking generically. I usually do all of my shopping this way and have been going to places in other neighborhoods. I thought it was about time to what is around here.

Queencallipygos, I could clarify that I was seeking places in which to buy clothing and home items secondhand and/or vintage under the generic term thrift store. So vintage clothing-and-antique store suggestions welcome.
  • Why aren't there any cool thrift stores in our area?

(Sound of Queencallipygos reading the posts before yours that all mention EIGHT thrift stores in our area)

Either you have a different definition of the word "cool," or perhaps you meant to post this in a different board?...
  • ok these are the thrift stores:
Salvation Army at Broken Angel: kinda fun, very warehousy. Lotsa clothes and furniture, all a little dingy. But a fun little walk over to Broken Angel.
Salvation Army- Atlantic cross street Bond. Good fun. Probably been 200+ times. Men's clothes upstairs. Also decent furniture selection.
Goodwill- Bond at Livingston. Super clean. Lots of womens clothes.
Goodwill- Fulton at Franklin- pretty good. As with all Goodwills- better "stuff" selection. Lots of new things and Target's leftovers.
That's it for major area thrift stores.
There's a new little store right on Classon at Dekalb. I've been twice, didnt buy anything, but a nice little stroll.
