FYI: Bad business behavior!!!

i wanted to share my experience. usually i just shrug my shoulders to cranky, mean business owners but this urked me too much. for all you who used to go to the laundry mat that burnt down on underhill and sterling, you understand how we've had to lug our laundry elsewhere for 2 months now. well i have resorted to trucking to the mat on vanderbilt btw. sterling and park. i'm lazy and usually drop it off. one of the first times i did my whites came back covered in purple lipstick marks. (i don't wear makeup) so i complained. they offered to wash it again with bleach. i settled. it didn't help. i continued going. last week i dropped a load off, they asked if i had a comforter. blah blah. i said nope. i did have a duvet cover, didn't think that qualified. so when i picked my laundry up they shoved my unwashed duvet into a dirty, ripped plastic bag. they didn't wash it b/c i didn't tell them i had a comfoter in the bag. whatever...so i said just keep it and wash it, not thinking that i paid for it weight wise when i dropped it off originally. ok so i come back to pick it up and it cost $9.00. what??? to wash a duvet cover, not a duvet comforter. i expressed my disdain and the gentlemen didn't care. actually he said, " i don't care." so growing furious i told him i would no longer be using his services to which he responded, "i don't care what you do, it doesn't matter what you do, i don't care." sweet that's just sweet. just letting you all know.

  • I have to admit that I didn't exactly get a "warm fuzzy" from the crew over there. The only time I had to use them was when all of the washers in my building were on the fritz.

Also the pricing is a tad predatory. They know that some people (i.e. me) when they drop off laundry are in the "Whatever" mode and don't want to argue about pricing.

When I get home tonight I'm going to hug my washer/dryer (really, I am, honest).
  • I said it before and I'll say it again... Ali's on St Johns off Washington. Best smelling laundry ever and he's really nice! He would never say he doesn't care.
  • Btw Sterling and Park? Is that the one where they have a sign that says something like, you are supposed to tip us?
  • YES, that IS where the sign suggests tipping, and is also the place that wants to charge $6.00 to wash a bathmat b/c it counts as a "small rug." I may give the St. Johns place a try.

Totally. Leroy is great. I do my laundry myself there and he was all "hey, haven't seen you around! Been away?" because I skipped my usual washing when I went on vacation. Not to mention it's huge and modern compared to that place on Underhill everyone used to love so much.
  • Am I the only one that goes to the place on vanderbuilt between park and sterling with the rules? If you break one Della? repeats it to you like 50 times.

"Please dont slam the doors! it breaks the machines"
"Oh no you didnt put dirty clothes in that cart! Oh no, dont do that again"
"Make sure you wipe off the top of that machine when youre done"
"Dont prescrub in our sink, do that before you come here"

Anyways I always go back cause they always play Jazz and getting yelled at reminds me of home.
  • When I lived on 7th ave I had a sadomasochistic relationship with the launderers on Union off 7th, so I know what you mean. Therapy helped me break free of them, though.
  • I still don't understand how they stay in business. They are rude and greedy! Everyone I know refuses to go there and are more than willing to walk to the place next to the Met. I have also fought with the owner about the parking spot in front of their place. She needs to park her pink caddy right in front of the window and refuses to move so you can fit 2 cars.

Has anyone noticed that they have a "Premises for sale" sign?
  • So it's The Muddy Waters of laundromats, huh?
  • The laundromat on Vanderbilt between Dean and Bergen may be a few blocks walk more for you guys, but I can't recommend May, the laundress, highly enough. And, She's sweet as suger! AND the prices are low! I also aways tip her, because I want to! It's not required or asked for. She does a lovely, fresh smelling job , perfectly folded and always on time. Nothing lost, damaged or ruined in 3 years of dropping it off. I love her! They open very, very early in the morning, you can drop it off before work, and pick it up on your way home. The Best. Exactly waht a lundry should be.
  • Subject: freaks

that place is crazy....it's like your in her living room uninvited doing your laundry! one time one of the dryers had smoke coming out of it from a bath mat & she ran around trying to pin one of us with the blame...it ended up being one of her workers! so glad i don't have to use that place anymore!
  • i can't agree more about the laundromat on vanderbilt btwn bergen and dean - may is delightful, the clothes always come back folded nicely (she even folds my underwear! no one ever does that!) and smelling great, and the prices are completely fair.
  • I can not believe that anyone likes the place on Vanderbilt. I recently tried going there because the one on Underhill has been closed. I brought in two huge bags that would have cost at least $40 to wash and the woman who works there barked at me: "Are those clothes separated? If not, you have to pay more." I have used a number of places in the neighborhood and never has anyone else ever tried to charge me more to separate (not to mention that she was rude about it). I then took me bags to Ali's on St. Johns, the worker there took them with no questions asked and they did a fine job.
  • There's simply no way May barked that at you, are we talking about the same place? Her English is not the best, but she never speaks like that, and I see her almost every day. She's consistently sweet and separates without even asking, and there's definitely no extra charge for it. I've brought in bags of laundry, like 6 weeks worth, too heavy to even lift myself, and it came to less than $30. If you're happy with Ali's, that's great!
  • That sounds like something Della would say

Mr Bionic Man, was it the small place with asian people or the bigger place with black people?
  • Sorry for the confusion. The bigger place with the black women running it and the sign saying that "Tipping is Greatly Appreciated", which is slightly more classy than a sign saying that "Tipping is not a city in China."
  • Ok, no problem.
  • I've been dropping off my laundry at the place on Vanderbilt between Park and Prospect for the past three years and I've never had a problem: Nothing missing, nothing added (I used to get other people's towels and underwear from the laundromat on Union beneath 7th) and the women working there are nice and polite, even when I've lost my claim ticket.
  • Agreed, the Vanderbilt (btw. Park & Sterling) laundromat gets on my nerves. The attitude, etc. I only keep going there because it's on the way to the subway in the morning.

I miss the place on Underhill and Sterling. I say we throw them a party when they get up and running again!
