I would say people don't only seem to think some cuisines should be expensive, but they actually do think so, and eat accordingly. I guess it all comes down to interpreting overpriced versus expensive.

I lived in Southern Africa (Namibia) for 3 years, and the food on the menu does resemble the types of food people (farmers) would make there, except maybe for the fish dishes (with the notable exception of fish and chips) , which I can't recall ever eating. I find the entrees to be at least based on actual dishes from there. I mention farmers in particular, because in the cities, the available food was pretty much what we have here, and there were a variety of restaurants one could choose from.
agree that it all comes down to interpreting overpriced vs expensive...based on the length of time they've been here (and successfully so)...they've even opened a Miami (i think its Miami) location..i guess a majority of people perceive it to be worth the price :)

when I eat caribbean (which can probably be described as simple) food..if I go to a "Mom and Pop" shop the food may be basically the same as a more "upscale restaurant...but the prices are quite different..which is expected

but more interesting than Madiba's prices..3 yrs in Namibia..wow..did you like?
  • Out of context? How did I manage that?

I thought you were done with this?
  • thalia wrote: [quote=WhyFi][quote=thalia]mebbe its the way you go about it..but it's always easier to look outwards
Yes, of course it is, but it cuts both ways, 'specially when the messages you're sending out are so precise.

Keep looking outwards, and you have a safe one, too!

you appear to be extremely dense..lemme spell it out for you..you are seriously lacking in interpersonal skills and appear to have control issues, to boot..I have no inclination to clarify anything I say to you..I managed to get straight answers from two other posters without any of the the silliness you put into yours...keep taking my statements out of context if it helps with that little control problem you have..

    =D>

actually, I've been to the Miami Beach Madiba - for an M3 party last March, in fact. the drink prices seemed fine to me - but we were also the only people there and the bartender was giving out a lot of freebies. I looked over the menu (the kitchen was closed at that point - the party was a dance/techno fest, not a food thing) and thought "crap, this is expensive."
also, the area the restaurant was in is an industrial area sandwiched between several pricey Miami Beach and causeway locales. Miami, though, is not NYC - people don't generally stop in sketchy locations - they just keep driving.

as an aside, I will forever associate the Miami Beach location of Madiba with a German DJ and his Overtown whore. sketch-o-rama.

It's dirty, too. Check out this report from the NYC Dept. of Health and Hygeine--notice that they received 13 points. If you get 28 or more, you fail inspection:

    MADIBA
    195 DEKALB AVENUE, BROOKLYN 11205
    718-855-9190

    Current violation points: 13

    Inspection Date: 03/08/2006

Violations were cited in the following area(s) and those requiring immediate action were addressed.

1.) Food not protected from potential source of contamination during storage, preparation, transportation, display or service.
2.) Evidence of flying insects or live flying insects present in facility's food and/or non-food areas.
Okay that totally groosed me out... but thats normal in most NY restaurants... no matter how "upscale" it is...

they customer service is great!! And I always leave there full... broke but at least in a good mood
  • There is another place, Cafe Layette, I think, that was revealed to have a rat infestation problem in it's inspection report. Nice.
  • Cafe Lafayette was shut down as a result, but it has since reopened. I haven't heard of any problems since then, so we can only hope they've gotten their acts together.

Didn't know they had shut down! I was last there in 2002, I think. When did they shut down and how long for?
  • I forget exactly, but I think it was some time in early 2005, and I'm guessing it was like 6 months.

I did like it a lot....I was with the Peace Corps, and taught up in the north of the country. It was a really interesting time to be there because they were just emerging from an independence struggle from South Africa, and most of the peoples were able to deal with race issues without a lingering bitterness that seems to be apparent here. The (white) Afrikaners were an exception, they were bitter. The other white groups, the English and the Germans were adjusting, as were the African groups.

It was also interesting to see how children were socialized by being given a lot of work to do on the family plots and with livestock, and thereby feeling a sense of importance at the role they play in the family.

All-in-all, a very transformative experience for me.

i think I stopped eating there in 2004 (i think)...I heard rats playing in the garden next to the patio while I was having dinner and right after I read the state dept health report and saw where they were cited for vermin droppings...that was enough for me..'twas a shame 'cause I loved some of their dishes

    very interesting observations..thank you :)
