The Armory on Pacific and Bedford (Mens's Shelter)

As far as I know, there are no plans to change it. You may want to call Tish James office and ask. She mentioned several proposals for changing the usage at a community meeting, but it seemed they were more things folks would like to happen not anything that had get been agreed on.

Tish James sucks.

Well, she's black for one--and educated--that's dangerous. Although it takes a "guest" to say so, cuz it ain't pc. I am being only slightly facetious. She's probably not perfect, but as far as I know from having met and spoken with her, she seems very leftish/anti Ratner, and pretty cool--but many people on this board say snide things--although from what I can tell, it's never backed up by any evidence other than the obvious--

About 2 years ago or so my husband attended a Community Board meeting where Roger Green said he was considering a proposal for armories in the district--the one on Bedford/Atlantic or the one in Park Slope on 8th Avenue. He wanted to convert an armory into a community center--place for recreation, events, activities for children/teens. He said he would propose either of the armories, but not both. Obviously we wanted it to be the one in Crown Heights on Atlantic, but I bet he either went with the Park Slope armory or dropped it entirely because I haven't heard anything since. It's a great idea and would be a nice use of space--we need space like this. I also know that Bloomberg's general homelessness policy is to try to phase out large group shelters like this one and focus on permanent housing, but I don't know what the current plans are (if any) for this men's shelter. I thought I heard something like that...I don't think it will stay a men's shelter forever. If the community puts enough pressure maybe things will change. I'm not thrilled with the idea of a shelter so close to me, but it is what it is, it doesn't consume my daily thoughts—life goes on. So far I havn't experienced anything totally negative. Knock on wood.

It’s an amazing building inside and out. I, a long time ago, have been to a few community events including a concert there 25 years ago "Steele Pulse" I believe. The men’s shelter is what it has been for what I believe to be the better part of the last twenty years. Which isn’t at all a negative. It functions very well, and offers great services for the homeless and is one of the few lasting such resources in its ability and scale. The community’s involvement in the facilitation of programs that create bridges and services for the homeless is what is needed. But in terms of the Armory being a plus or a minus for the neighborhood, I must say that its existence is a good thing and a necessity. This (Crown Heights” is and has always been a community. Community in the, "really explore the meaning of the word" sense.

would be nice to see something else than a homeless shelter.

and those rich white folks who want that homeless shelter to stay. well they can host it in their area! or hell host a homeless person in their homes.
