Tamarindo [split topic]

BTW: speaking of salmonberries, I couldn't find fresh tamarind the other day, so I ended up using leftover cranberries from the holidays in the stuffing for my baked schnapper. Worked a treat. But I'd still like to know where to find fresh tamarind.

I've never checked for sure, but they might sell it at Sahadi's on Atlantic Ave. I know I've also seen it around in some Carribean groceries too, but it might be a seasonal thing. I'll check today with someone who I know has bought it. -

I went to Sahadi's yesterday looking for it. They had a jar of processed gloop which I bought. They didn't have the semi-fresh compressed pith, let alone the fresh pods. -
Try the West Indian markets on Flatbush Ave. between Empire Blvd and Hawthorne. It might also be seasonal. I know the Co-op gets it in once in awhile.

There is fresh tamarind to be found on Flatbush in PLG. OJ Grocery on Flatbush and (IIRC) Midwood definitely has it. -
I actually bought some of the dried tamarind pulp at the Key Food of Flatbush a few months ago. It was stuffed in with the "ethnic foods" at the end of one of the aisles near the produce. Just used it to make some damn tasty squid salad.

tamarind: actually found some frozen, unsweetened, unadulterated pulp at the c-town on washington (yes, it's disgusting, but how deadly can frozen tamarind be) a few years ago. used it to make some fan-fuckin'-tastic margaritas.

Ba Xuyen, the sandwich shop (8th Ave/42nd St) always has two kinds of the boxed pods, and some pressed paste. And then you're just down the block from Hong Kong Market...
Now I totally want a tamarind margarita. Best from frozen paste??
