Cool! I've always wanted to see the inside of that church. I've heard good things about the pastor.
  • just bumping up this thread as a reminder to anyone who is interested in attending

as noted on another thread there was an incident last night on st. marks between classon and franklin that involved a number of people getting shot, one is in critical condition.

this is not about fear, this is about the reality of gun violence in our community
if we want to rid the neighborhood of guns,
it is going to require persistent pressure on the precinct and our elected officials
and this is not an issue of race or gentrification
to anyone who thinks that it is
i challenge you to show up at the meeting and see who else attends.

i was biking home once on a saturday night, around midnight, and ran into pastor gahagen helping one of his parishioners park her car. i'm not exactly sure how this happened (he may have gotten out of the car to ask why i was standing on the sidewalk staring at his church in the middle of the night), but he introduced himself and after talking for a bit we eventually discovered that he went to seminary with my pastor from back home in PA. he invited me to come by on sunday, an offer i haven't taken yet, but i am considering. basically, yeah, good things, he seems like a nice guy. i'd be interested in seeing the inside of epiphany too, but unfortunately cannot attend tomorrow's meeting.

actually, i may be wrong. how long do these meetings usually go, and is it okay to step out before they are over?
  • hmmmm
the meetings are certainly not known for their brevity
but it is fine to come and go as you please
  • I'll try to attend myself, thanks for the info guys!
  • Subject: precinct and community meeting

    so...anyone went to the meeting?
  • yes,
    • the new Brooklyn North borough commander was there,
he is Gerald Nelson and he grew up in Crown Heights,
he promised he would be focusing on our issues.
    • Det. Ins. Kosgrove gave the end of year stats which as we all know were not good
and i am sorry, i spaced on the exact figures but homocides were way up,
i think there were 13 fatalities due to guns.
he is making a big push to reintroduce a 7 year old program where a $1000 reward is given to anyone who gives info leading to the arrest of a person with a fire arm, this is a completely confidential program.
reducing the gun violence is his major priority.
    questions that were raised included:
    • saturday night's incident on st. marks: it resulted in a shooting, a stabbing and an attack with a blunt object, no arrests have been made.
    • how effective an investigative force do we have (on the part of either NYPD of FDNY) when it comes to arson, a crime which is a huge threat to our community
    • a plea to keep putting pressure on solving the murders of the young people of our community (ie Chanel Petro-Nixon)
    on the lighter side:
i was a bit late and walked in just as a group of kids who won 1st place in a step competition were performing. (excellent 8) )
awards were given, people were honored, food was served
  • wow, awesome. too bad I was asleep after a red eye from vegas. I really, REALLY want to make it to one of these meetings. next time. thanks for the update, neene!
  • It was my first community meeting and I found it rather informative. There was a good turnout. Seemed like qite a few people had agendas to push. Especially a lady named "Connie", who was heavily into fire prevention. She spoke about a wave of "suspicious" fires. She even tried to recruit me to join her organization. They are having a meeting on the 16th of Jan. I think.

Does anyone have any info on those fires especially the ones around Pacific St.? I live on Pacific and Franklin. I've noticed quite a few buildings that were bought and being renovated. I've also noticed some condos going up heading toward Washington.

I agree too neene. Those steppeers were fantastic. =D>
  • Thanks for the updates, guys! I got home from work lateish last night and didn't want to step in an hour late :( Scary about the stats, but Gerald and Det. Kosgrove's new initiatives sound promising...
  • in the end i wasn't able to make it last night either, so thanks for the report. what exactly was this meeting though, was it the 77th precinct community council? cos their website gives misleading information about where that happens. when is the next community board meeting, and are those worth going to as well?
  • The next community board meeting is tomorrow Jan. 11 at 7:30 pm.
    PLACE: BEREAN MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH
1641 Bergen Street (near Rochester Avenue)

  • I am a bit confused about all the different meetings regarding CH (the 77th Precinct, the Community 8, the Crow Hil Association, etc). Can anyone enlighten me about the differences and importance of each one? when and where do they meet? I would like to become more involved in the community but my time is extremely limited.

    thanks!
  • Crow Hill is a community association representing merchants and residents in the area of Crown Heights historically called Crow Hill
this is the website: http://www.crowhillcommunity.org (tho we are still having technical problems), it addresses everything from safety to beautification. if you live within its boundaries: basically eastern pkwy to atlantic from bedford to franklin (tho loosely from rogers to classon) this is a very good place to get involved

here is a general description of what a community board is and how it functions: http://www.nyc.gov/html/cau/html/cb/cb_main.shtml
this is the best place to get an idea of the scope of issues that are facing our community.

i do not know what the formal definition of a precinct community council is but...
this is the best place to voice concerns over safety and police related issues. the commanding officer gives a report and there are usually a number of elected officials present. there is also a lot of recognition given to the youth in the community especially those involved with PAL which the precinct seems very active in.

if you want to pm me i can give you a more personal view of what i have learned from attending various meetings over the past 6 months.
  • A precinct community council is a forum for the police to meet and become involved directly in the community. They usually meet once a month and it gives residents a chance to question the police about their activities and voice concerns. Each precinct runs its own council and the boards are elected from amongst the participating residents. Elections are usually once a year. The community councils also serve as the community relations/outreach arm of the precinct as they assist in the planning of events for the community like PAL, the Explorers, etc.

In terms of importance, it really depends on what your particular interests are and what impact you want to have in the community. Community Bd meetings tend to cover a lot of issues from quality of life to crime to economic development. If crime is more of an issue for you then the precinct council meetings are probably the ones to attend. If you are looking for something more social, then something like Crown Heights North that deals with a lot of issues but has been focused more on landmarking and neighborhood improvement may be what you're looking for. You probably need to determine what you are most interested in and then attend a couple of meetings to see what each organization is about.
  • How was the crow hill meeting?
  • Assemblyman Karim Camara is having a meeting this Thursday, Jan. 25, 2007 at 1200 Dean Street at 7pm. Be there to find out whats going on in the hood.
  • 77th Pct. Clergy Council will be hosting a meet & greet with Deputy Inspector John Cosgrove of the 77th precinct and Chief Douglas Ziegler of the Community Affairs Bureau.

  • Reminder!!!

    Tonight is Assemblyman Camara's meeting.
  • Not sure why this thread got locked (wasn't me!) but the trolly guest post has been removed and this topic is now open again.

Anonymous guests, please take a moment to read the rules -- which are posted at the top of every page on this site at the link labeled "READ THE RULES" -- and BE NICE.
  • when i clicked on this thread and found it locked, i raised the question with admin as to why...
    (thanks apollonia666 for unlocking it.)
i feel this is an important thread in that it contains substantial information about meetings in the community and i believe it is helpful (especially for new members) that it gets revived when a reminder gets posted to it.

@guest: may i suggest two things (and normally i would put this sort of thing in a pm but...)

first is that you actually join this community by adapting a name so that the rest of us have a sense of communicating with someone who is literally "on board". at a certain point, it's hard to respect the comments and suggestions of someone who isn't willing to participate with the same sense of commitment as the rest of the group. while i appreciate the effort you make to get people involved, i think remaining as an outsider over such an extended period of time undermines your intent and your posts start to have a quality of "talking down" to the rest of us which i hope is not your intention.

the second thing that comes to mind is that instead of admonishing people for their lack of action, try letting them know what they are missing when they don't attend, give them a taste of what happens at these meetings, it just might spark someone's interest.

so what did you all miss?
    • first of all (imho) this group (currently called the Crown Heights Coalition) has a huge potential to get things done. everyone who attends seems to be there because they have something they want to offer to the community. it is a group that is geared towards action not complaints and most of the people involved have a long standing and deep commitment to the community. at the next meeting, Citizen's Action of New York will be present to give us guidelines on creating an infrastructure best suited to serve our purpose: we will be defining how tight or loose an organization we want to be and structuring our policies accordingly.
    • Assembly Member Camara discussed his office's efforts to get the Impact Zone reinstated in the community
    • Det Raton (formerly one of our community affairs officers) was present and fielded some questions about police/community relations and policing in general
    • Council Member Letitia James gave a report on the impact of this year's budget (positive & negative) as well as the initiatives that she is working on
    • people signed up to be part of various committees which will address everything from economic development to street outreach to resources
    • a number of opportunities for employment (an upcoming job fair to be hosted at camara's office, an american friend's service committee position for a young person and resume writing assitance) where discussed
gratuitous plug: i am chairing the resource committee, the goal of which is to create a database of the various opportunities available to the community; from non-profit grants to church programs to help with resume writing, everything!
so, if anyone has any information about programs/resources (no matter how big or small) that should be included in this project, please pm me

when the next meeting date is announced i will post it along with a list of the various committees that are already in place,
anyone interested in advance of that can call Camara's office and speak to Lauren: 718-756-1776.
  • I've been in CH for a while (3 yrs) but new to these boards (any boards for that matter)..... so excuse a stupid question.
I haven't had any problems with crime, but want to get involved. I love my nabe.
All the mentions for community meetings seem to concern the world north of Eastern Parkway. Living on the south side..... I'm feeling a little left out.
Do these community groups cover my neck of the woods? Or should I be trying to find something more local.
    Please inform

The south side is covered by the 71st precinct and Community Board 9. Call the precinct and they can help you out with when and where the meetings are in your area.
