hair salon recs? — Brooklynian

hair salon recs?

edited November -1 in Park Slope
hi everyone-

can you recommend a good hair salon in park slope? i've been going to mousey brown in williamsburg, but it's such a trek in crappy weather & i'm looking for something closer to home.

i just need a cute cut- long waves with some layers...if anyone has a salon name, or even the name of a favorite stylist, that would rock.

also something under $75 would be good too.

and- if there are places to avoid, that would be a good topic as well- i once went to the aveda salon on 7th avenue & they fried my hair, as well as cut it too short, even while i was protesting. argh. just trying to avoid that; thanks in advance!!!

  • Do a search on 'hair' or 'hair salon' or 'haircut' and you'll find a lot of previous discussions.

I let a gal named Jackie that was working thursday at a place named Michaels ( I think) ; that is across the street from the Aveda salon at 9 th street & 7 th avenue, style my hair the other day. I liked her. I am going back for a cut this next thursday , for a trim. I'll let you know how it was.
    Meredith, proprietress, mousey brown salon.
( i like strangers to cut my hair, go figure)

I use Medusa on 7th avenue. The cuts are fashionable and reasonably priced. Cash only, though.
  • I just had the worst haircut of my adult life at Le Chandelier. The stylist spent less than 15 minutes actually cutting/styling, I ended up with horrific surprise bangs and I wasn't offered the chance to see the back of it at the salon.....and it's uneven. I will spend tomorrow attemting to have it fixed. Or I will resurrect Seattle Grunge and wear my knit hat at all times.

  • I just got my haircut at Medusa on 7th and Sterling. It was reasonably priced and he does a great job. I have long hair and I just wanted a trim with layers,. I've had had experiences with stylists who overzealoulsy want to give me some sort of bob and the guys here dont go scissor crazy :P !

Oh, maybe I'm talking about a different salon but this one accepts credit and debit cards.
  • Transplant, i have gone to Le Chandelier for years -since it opened and had wonderful haircuts. Tara and her crew are the best and I would recommend it highly. I'm sure it was an aberation.
  • re: medusa, who did you go to there? I've gone to Laurie at Pomona but even tho' for NYC she is reasonably priced ($60-65), I'd like to spend less than that. is it possible? how much is medusa? thanks! (also there are two medusa's on 7th avenue. are they related? how do they differ?

meredith, did you just pick michael's out of 'the blue?' that seems brave! let us know tho'.

I went to Tara once at Le Chandelier and I thought she did a good job. I didn't go back from whatever reason but I wasn't unhappy with the cut.
  • The original Medusa is across from PS 321. A couple of years ago, Louis, who was one of the owners of Medusa, sold his interest in it to his partner and moved to Harmony Salon, which is on 7th Ave. near Flatbush. One or maybe two of his sons went to Harmony with him. Maybe you are thinking of that as the other Medusa? I don't know of another one. Anyway, Louis has been cutting my hair for years. He's a nice guy and will listen to what you want.
  • I use Kelly at Medusa on 7th and Garfield(?) as does my roomate and a friend of mine. She's great, but she's cutting back on hours because she is in school. The cut is about 60$.

I did just pick Michael salon cold. I did go back just today and get a trim with Jackie. I want to wash it once and style it myself to really see.I am a big baby about the quantity of hair that gets cut, as I am constantly growing out my hair it seems. So, Jackie just took off a little.I didn't like that we didn't have a consult before the shampoo.I ALWAYS do. It's the only way I can really assess all the factors that will come into play when I am cutting & styling.Over-all, for a gal 3 years out of beauty school, she is good. I have difficult hair, in that if a stylists doesn't texturize my ends how I like it, I never love it. My hair shows every cut, because it is straight and glossy. So it looks best either really blunt , or really texturized with a lot of "pointing". I know it sounds like I am an egomaniac, but I really do love how I cut long hair. I wish that I could pop my own head off to cut my own hair. Many stylists are weird-o's about their hair, but I take the cake. I do feel my clients are well served by my perfectionistic streak. I won't admit to how long I've done hair, but I still love to hear it when I am told how much they love their cut. It's heaven for me when women or men have alot of hair to cut, so I can really transform it. I imagine most stylists like that. So in all honesty I can't say if Jackie was a 'Hair genius' or not, cause she didn't have much to work with, since I didn't want to loose too much length.
I would let Chris, whom I work with, do my hair if I could ever get it long enough for him to do his magic on. He's very good.
I fantasize about a really great rock 'n roll shaggy thing from Sally Hershberger, or a long sexy Sahag cut, but who can afford it?
  • The few times I've gone to Le Chandlier I've gotten great cuts. I go to Rudy and I'm pretty impressed. Last cut I got, I got so many compliments on it and it works really well when I wear my hair straight or curly. I especially liked the fact that he styled my hair curly so I could see how it looked before he blew it out. Only downside is they do charge extra to blow my hair out, but alas that's the curse of having really curly hair!
  • Carrie at Park Slope Suds (7th ave. at 15th St.) is fantastic. Cute, funky salon. Cuts are $60. She's meticulous and listens to her clients. Texas, another stylist, is also fantastic. Previously had gone to Medusa, where my desire to have my hair dyed a dark chestnut resulted in a nuclear purple/burgundy disaster. They're inconsistent.
  • I've gone to Hair Concern for years. They are on 7th Avenue between 2nd & 3rd Streets. The place is upstairs... over the newsstand (the entrance is between the Tempo place and the newsstand). I've had my hair cut by both Dana and Vincent and have always been pleased with the results. They pay attention to requests and don't do things if you don't ask for it. They also have a great policy that if you aren't completely happy, come back within a week and they'll touch up the cut for free (like if you aren't sure you want it cut so much but then it turns out you did want a bit more off). Sometimes you just can't tell until you wash and style it yourself for a couple days. Their phone number is 718-499-9400. Hope this helps! :D

Almost forgot... for just a cut/trim I think with tips I usually spend $50 or so (give or take a couple bucks).
  • Don't go to Medusa - I posted looking for a new place to go a couple of months ago and Medusa was highly recommended to me. After my cut my bangs were VERY uneven with the shortest part of the slope only about an inch from my scalp and they were backwards (I wanted them off to the side - but they went longest to shortest rather than the other way). The girl who cut it was just way to "hip" and mangled my hair. I'm waiting for it to grow long enough to go back to Bumble and Bumble in the city. A 20 minute train ride is better than being forced to put your hair in a ponytail in the winter .
