to buzz or to open

I tell them that I'll be down in a few seconds, but I buzz as well, 'specially if it's cold, raining, etc. If they feel inclined to come up, and they get to my door before I put on my shoes, so be it.

I buzz and wait for them to come to me. If the UPS or FedEx, I often shout down if I have to sign for it... if not, I just tell them to leave it there to save them a trip up (I'm on the top floor of a walk up).

my building doesnt have an intercom. but i still just buzz. then i open my door and they can keep walking up the stairs until the see me greet them in the hallway at my door. my last building didnt have any way of buzzing people in, and id have to run down and then back up 5 flights of stairs everytime, only to find half of the time no one was there.... so i say buzz, and wait for someone to come in.
but if youre like me, without an intercom, never buzz someone in if youre not expecting mr. pizza man, mr. chinese delivery, Freshy-D dudes, etc. -
I go down and meet them. I feel bad making people walk up 4 flights of stairs.

Fresh Direct: i pay them a nice tip for humping my groceries up three flights of stairs. Young and strong can help out the old and wise.
Anyone else: I'll shout them out the front window and go meet them. -
i wouldn't worry too much about what the delivery person is used to...i have little doubt that they get their share of people who make them walk up 5 flights of stairs on a regular basis. if you're one of them, just give them an extra buck or two for the effort. money talks and your guilty conscience walks.

Yea I always give a higher tip to thank them for making the hike rather than me.
