Donation: THANKS to 11238

edited November -1 in Prospect Heights
As noted on a previous thread (here), our benevolent webhost shut down Dailyheights.com last night for being so insolent that we actually use the bandwidth we paid for. Consequently, it looks like we will have to abandon El Cheapie and go with a "real" webhost, or at least a somewhat more expensive one.

A couple of you have offered to make donations, and many thanks to 11238 for an amazing donation! She has definitely made the search for a new webhost easier. [email protected] is set up to receive donations, so you could use that for now. However, like Dave said, technical expertise is also appreciated, as we may be making big changes around here soon.

  • One way you could earn a little extra for the site, would be a fee for each of the title promotions (newbie to regular, insider, grandmaster, etc.). I know we talked about new titles before- we should have some unique ones (only one person could have each). I bet some people who might not donate would be willing to pay a nominal amount to be "Archduke of Home Heating Oil" or "Master of Carneviento". You could even auction them off!
  • SELL T-SHIRTS!
I'd pay more for a DH or meaty wind t-shirt if proceeds went to keep the site running.

Definitely t-shirts! And maybe stickers too!

I think you can make that type of stuff on cafepress.com or something.
  • Subject: fundraising

Online T-shirt sales are a great idea. You could also sell a "subscription" to some kind of email "newsletter" that provides links to the most popular threads and announces the times of upcoming Soda flashmob drinkfests.

And hey, I would totally buy a DailyHeights mug. Or give me the pics used by GrandMaster profiles and I'll draw some kind of cartoon poster that you could then sell with the t-shirts (I am an amateur illustrator).
  • I think we're going to do a Graphics Contest with a Ca$$H Priz$$e. The best ideas will all be uploaded into the dailyheights.com cafepress account that's currently dormant (or another custom merchandise vendor, if there's something out there better than cafepress).

This is not the formal announcement, but if graphics are your bag, baby, then you just got a head start! Also, the non-graphically-inclined can describe ideas and then split the cash prize with a graphically-inclined DHer.

    I'm on it.

    Me too!

What are these cash prizes, I wonder? How about free drinks at Soda? Or a meal at Beast? Or a wine from Fermented Grapes? Or cigars?

Or maybe you could get local places to donate stuff to the contest, since we are already giving them tons of free advertising. Maybe you (or someone) could offer to post links or their info on the DH site in exchange.

P.S. I was in Fermented Grapes last night and overheard a couple tell the owner that they were new to the neighborhood and wanted to know where to get things like good produce. I interrupted and plugged this site as the source for all Proho info & networking needs.

I LOVE the soviet-era concept, but the "drippy drumstick" idea kind of makes my stomach turn (I'm feeling a bit queasy already). :(

I think there should be two versions, "with drippy" and "without drippy." :)
  • So what happened with the host?

Yeah -- I feel guilty every time I hit reload. and considering I'm STILL at work, I'm hitting reload pretty frequently.

I'm at home. Quite loaded, rather frequently.

I'm pretty psyched for getting home to a glass of something. dinner be damned, must drink.
  • Don't feel guilty reloading or getting loaded. We are nowhere near our bandwidth limit, and I'm still working out with "tech support" exactly what went wrong with the server load. I think I ameliorated the problem but I have no idea what the current server load is. And tech support is all by e-mail. They move at the pace of one barely intelligible bit of text hurled at you every 12 hours. It's like playing chess by mail. Also, we have an extremely decent amount of donations that I still have to announce and say thank you properly for, so if we do get kicked off the server we have plenty of options.

awesome! no more guilt! I'm guilt-free!

    :D
  • No kidding - I was feeling guilty, too. I had already begun to streamline my DH surfing habits. ("If I minimize this window, I won't have to navigate through the home page later...")

awesome. I'm such a junky for things I get attached to that I can't handle the guilt associated with them. I'm glad I don't need to worry. :) yay DH!!
