Woman in Burnt Orange Parka w/stroller and dog . . .
To the woman in the burnt orange longish parka with dark hair in a ponytail
at Fifth Ave and Union St this morning around 9:15am
with the stroller and a medium sized fluffy light-colored dog . . .
I noticed you because of the look on your face as your dog left a trail of glob on the sidewalk. It was cold out, and we all have places to get to and things to take care of, out of the cold. I have a dog - I'm sympathetic to that feeling.
A short time later, I passed back by that same spot. You were gone, but the trail of poo was still there. YOU didn't clean up after your dog! YOUR kid may be in a stroller today, but other kids on that block have just started walking, right into your dog's poo apparently. Hundreds of other people pass by that spot on the way to the subway - right into your dog's poo.
I'm rather hoping that you're home now, checking this neighborhood message board. Or maybe one of your loved ones (or perhaps employer, if you're the babysitter out walking the dog) is reading this and recognizes your coat, your kid, your dog that looks like a small sheep dog.
It's not too late to go back and do the right thing.
It doesn't matter if it's cold or what else is going on - CLEAN UP AFTER YOUR DOG!
p.s. if you're dog is pooping like that on a regular basis, it needs a giardia test and/or change in diet. Giardia is contagious - spread by the poop of course - and is epidemic in the West Village right now.

Though what do you do when the poo is just too runny to be bagged? I have had this dilemma more than once. I do make a good-faith effort to bag as much of it as I can, but that usually doesn't do much good.
There has been a serious epidemic of dog shit on my block lately. I think someone got a dog for Christmas, and the dog didn't come with instructions, or plastic bags. I walked out one morning to find it smeared all over right in front of my house, for my kids and my own dogs to walk through. It was so bad that I had to hook up the hose and turn on the water that had been shut off for the winter, to wash the sidewalk. Then I poured Pine Sol on the sidewalk. It was really bad. -
Urg! Seriously! clean after your dog!! Urrg!
My block is littered with small dog waste. Warning to the person who's doing this: If I catch you and your little mut I swear I'm going to shove it up....
Well, you get the point. I hate the fact that I can't walk around town without having to stare at the floor constantly to avoid stepping in crap.

Not to be gross but I've been seeing a lot more trails and less piles. I fear that a few dogs in the neighborhood already have it. Nobody cleans up after their dog anymore. It sucks. I saw a woman picking up a pile the other day and it felt weird - because I never see anyone doing it. -
I sympathize with the runny dog poop dilema, I mean if its all 'wet' how can you pick it all up? I make the good faith effort with some newspaper but it ends up far from 'clean'.
That being said I wouldnt care all that much if it was in the street, but on the sidewalk (especially a busy one like 5th and Union) is just WRONG -

it's all about the good-faith effort, and leaving a smear is also gross but there's less to be done about that. Maybe put newspaper over it?
If I had *know* she was going to walk away, I would have approached her with a bag. I've done that on the rare occasions that I've seen someone walk away from their mess, which btw I've only witnessed late at night. But in broad daylight? Some nerve . . .

Dottietron, if that were true, there wouldn't be a clear place to walk. There are THOUSANDS of dogs that live here, and most of their owners clean up after them. I hate doing it, but I do it. -

99.9% of the time you dont know its coming and a small water bottle isnt going to do anything except make a slightly bigger mess.
Again I only let them go in the street and then clean up as best I can but I'm afraid the street is only going to get real clean again after it rains.
Luckily my dogs are real regular (and solid) -
Before my parents' dog died, my dad would carry paper plates with him when he walked her. when she...er... struck her pooping pose... he'd stick a plate under her bum like a target. Then he'd pop the plate in a baggy. Seems like that might work for the more liquid variety, too.

2. I remember when the pooper-scooper law was first passed and I couldn't figure out how enforcement was going to work. I had visions of cops walking around and putting tickets on the little steaming piles. -

It's been going on for years, and they'll even send you the flags. -

Then again, I was with my dog upstate once, and she made a pile in the middle of a road (not a road anyone ever walks on, mind you), and I just happened to be working outdoors, with a can of spray paint in my hand.
