Finding an affordable apartment in surrounding 11238 areas

My husband and I have been searching for a 2+ bedrooms apartment for 4 people (2 adults and 2 children) and have had the hardest time. I'm getting desperate and need HELP. I've even started viewing apartments in Jersey. Hopefully someone out there has some strong leads for us where we dont have to move in with anything but the rent and security- not $4000, please.
Our budget is $1200 a month.

  • I'm not terribly familiar with the 11238 neighborhoods but a 2BR for $1200 is going to be hard to find, isn't it?

Also, you should post this on the P-Heights board, no?

    FG/CH/B-S is more 11205, 11206, and 11221, if I'm not mistaken
  • I hate to be the bearer of bad news but you aren't going to find a 2BR apartment in Fort Greene for $1200. A studio costs $1300 these days. You're going to be extremely lucky to find a 2BR for $1200 anywhere near Fort Greene or Clinton Hill.

11238 is part of FG (I used to live on the block of Greene between Fulton and Cumberland and it's 11238 but now I'm in 11205).
  • 11238 is Clinton Hill not Fort Greene. I live on Washington between Greene and Lafayette. By the way, Clinton Hill has very few two bedroom apartments. You should probably expect to pay $1500-$2000 in this area.
  • CHDiva, As I mentioned... I lived on Greene between Fulton and Cumberland... Definitely Ft. Greene.. My address was definitely 11238. I'm not making things up... Check the map if you like... http://www.google.com/maps?q=5+Greene+Ave,+Brooklyn,+NY+11238&sa=X&oi=map&ct=title

as Homer would say, "unregardless..." we all agree there ain't no 2 BR for $1200 in FG/CH

I see listings for 2 BRs, but they ain't $1200
  • In addition to FG and CH, 11238 covers a significant part of Prospect Heights, probably still not possible, but boygabriel has a good suggestion, post on that board as well Katrina
  • Yikes. That's my zip code and I pay more than that for a 1 bedroom. If I remember my Craigslist days right, Bed-Stuy often has two bedrooms around that price.
  • thanks for every ones response, and I do believe that the area I've been living in for 12 years is Clinton Hill, I am on Clifton Place and St. James. If anyone has any strong leads though, please reply.
  • for that price have you thought about bensonhurst/gravesend its safe and cheap and witin your price and alot of kids around the area. but travel time is about 40 mins to manhattan via train.
  • I will agree with the above post. lots of bargains down here, and very safe.
I found a full floor thru/1BR for $780. overall its worth a little longer commute
  • oh only draw back is most landlords also live there. and they dont really put up ads. best is to walk around or look at newspaper ads like daily news.

but it is dirty cheap hehe.
  • We have a 3 bedroom apt in BedStuy for $1360. Thats a bit out of your budget but I think its about as good as it gets- I know we have units open in the building but there's not tons of kids around or anything.
  • Well if anyone sees an "apartment for rent " sign, please email me directly. I'd appreciate it. I spent today driving around Newark, NJ where every other house has a for rent sign. Im definately not against a 40 minute commute, we're pretty used to it. But I would prefer to stay in Brooklyn, NY.
  • if you consider south brooklyn, there alot of cheap listings here

I see its down, but its the web version of the classifieds I get in the papers around here.
