Hotels or BB's in the neighborhood

Subject: Hotels or B&B's in the neighborhood

So some good friends of mine who visit me a couple of times a year are coming for a weekend in February, and this time one of them is thinking about bringing his mom and aunt along. I don't have room to put them all up at my place, so my friends are going to stay with me and we're looking for a hotel nearby for the mom and aunt. I'm thinking a small hotel or B&B would be nice, if we can find an affordable one, and I'd like to find something within walking distance of my place on Bergen just east of Washington. It would just make coordinating everything with all the visitors much easier.

There are two older threads on the site that talk about places in the area:
http://www.brooklynian.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=3560
http://www.brooklynian.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2241

In those threads, the following places were mentioned:
Brooklyn Marriott (not really what we have in mind at all)
Bed & Breakfast Marisa
Garden Green Bed & Breakfast
House on 3rd Street
Bed & Breakfast on the Park

I'm leaning towards Marisa, because it's close by and the rates aren't too bad. Garden Green is in PH too, although I haven't found out the rates yet because it doesn't appear to have a website of its own. The last two are in Park Slope, which we'll consider if we have to, but it would be great if they were able to stay closer.

Anyone know of any other places in the neighborhood I should look into?

  • You can get some information on Garden Green here:

I'm not sure if the rates are completely up-to-date, but I think they're approximately what was paid by visitors of ours who stayed in the garden apartment about a year ago. (I seem to remember also that there was a little bit of a deal for staying several days -- but I may have invented that.)

The apartment is very nice and everything went smoothly for our visitors -- nice being so close to Met foods and Natural Land, since the unit has a kitchen. (We ate at our place or out for lunch and dinner, but they liked having breakfast at home and also having a little wine and cheese pre-dinner.)

My impression is that the wife of the couple deals with the B&B -- the only weird part of the visit was when our guests tried to deal with the husband on his own. They said he acted strangely towards them, but frankly, I wouldn't be prepared to rule out their having been strange towards him first.

Since they failed to make timely reservations for their summer visit, we just cruised craigslist for a long-weekend apartment sublet, which also worked out well and affordably.
  • Have you thought of searching Craigslist for a private house for sublet over the weekend? Lots of people try to get a couple hundred for their place over a long weekend. It is more then their rent and less then a hotel. Might be worth checking out.
  • we had overflow guests stay at Garden Green (that's the one on Carlton, right?) and it was fine. Made it easy for our peeps to find the train.
Husband *was* a little weird, but nothing terrible and nothing that would prevent me from housing my aunties there. At the time, they had dropped the breakfast part of the B'B.

I'm curious about Bed & Breakfast Marisa - pls post back if you use 'em . . .
  • I hadn't considered a weekend sublet -- that's a great idea!

It's up to my friend, really, but I hope they consider Marisa -- they have a pair of rooms that share a bathroom, which sounds just right, and are closer to my place than any of the other options I've found so far. Whatever happens, I'll let folks here know how it works out.
  • Dang, not enough room at the Marisa the weekend we need it. Still looking.

We found one more in Park Slope we're checking out:
    Union Street Brooklyn B&B
  • Holiday Inn Express on Union and 4th.

FYI, that's Union St in Carroll Gardens, on the other side of the Gowanus. It's a very industrial walk to the train at Union/4th Ave.

The Holiday Inn Express is between 3rd and 4th Aves on Union, and is as a good a backup plan as any . . .
The Garden Green place is much closer to you.
  • My friend Johanna owns Angelique Bed & Breakfast on Union st. in Carroll Gardens...it's in a lovely brownstone, run by an artist, and has been in operation for a number of years.

    405 Union Street Brooklyn, NY 11231 (718) 852-8406

    tell them Stacey sent you.

Very odd place for a Holiday Inn, but I suppose a hotel that rents by the half-hour might be handy.

    Oh please!
  • My brother and his wife stayed at B&B Marisa a few years ago and it was fine. the only weird thing was that i booked them in a room with their own bath and it wasn't until a few days into the visit that i found out that they had actually been put in a room with a bath DOWN THE HALL. This was something my bro definitely didn't want and they changed it right away but still... wha the fu...?

the owner guy seems nice but struck me as a little spacey. however, it's the most convenient locale. and it wouldn't stop me from booking there again.
