  • I love her in that cantina scene. And the soundtrack.

I hate feeling like an Old Fart, but I do sorely miss the excitement that new music had for me in the 70s and early 80s, when every other record was a life-changing revelation. Bowie, Roxy, Eno, Bill Nelson, Devo, Sex Pistols, Talking Heads, 2-Tone, Pere Ubu, Magazine, the Slits, Au Pairs, Lene Lovich, Lora Logic, Suburban Lawns, Gang of Four, the Specials, Laurie Anderson, Danielle Dax, Klaus Nomi ... and I wonder how much of that is because I do think the postpunk era was an incredible time, and how much is just that, for every generation, the music you listen to in your teens and 20s remains the most emotionally vibrant. Is it the hormones? And life circumstances, before most people "settle down"? Obviously every generation has its certain frequency, but I hate the idea of taste becoming calcified.

I really try to explore new music, but so much of the time I think, "eh, I've heard this done before, and so much better". Most of what I listen to these days is classical.

I shouldn't complain, because what I have in my life now is more important than the thrill of buying that new album - but I miss it, anyway, dammit. Ah well.

You may have hit the nail squarely on the head, sister. I think at that age you are putting together the musical equivalent of your life's photo album/scrapbook. The soundtrack to the beginning of your adulthood. A time that you'll look back on and ask, for better or for worse, "Wow, was that really me?" And if that period in time coincided with some seminal music, well then...

I still get those moments when a new song or album makes me feel like a teenager all over again. (And not just rock; jazz and world get me that way on occasion.) Granted, it's not as frequent as back in the day but then again a good chunk of what I liked then I don't care for now. (Of course, there are plenty others that STILL rock my world.) I think part of it has to do with acknowledging that when it comes to rock music it's all been done. Three times. So, these days I'm looking the other way so to speak and giving more points for execution than originality. (However, I won't fail to acknowledge the BLATANT influence of, say, Gang of Four on Franz Ferdinand, The Futureheads, Bloc Party, etc. That's just plain wrong.)

Your heard-it-before-and-better dilemma reminds me of a musician friend whose ear/pitch is so developed he can take musical dictation. We'd discuss a song he'd be listening to for the first time and he'd say, "OK...check out the chorus: B into F...here comes that D#minor...yeah." I remember thinking one day, "It's an awesome gift but I'd never want it. I never want music to lose all its magic for me like that." I guess what I'm trying to say is if maybe you put aside their immediate and/or obvious influences a little bit you might be able to enjoy a new song/album/artist a little better. Good luck...
  • I don't have a problem with blatant influences per se ... I like Interpol f'rinstance ...
  • The Influence isn't the problem per se, no? It's a failure to go past and make something of your own out of it.
Fer instance, the first time I heard Antony and the Johnsons I thought, MAN that child listened to a lot of Nina Simone. But it's not karaoke, it's a great influence. The nothing new under the sun thing is *not* the problem.

I think music blogs are definitely the best way to find new music, as are podcasts (NPR has all song considered, MPR has a program as well). Anyway, here's some sites I like:

    http://elbo.ws/tracks/
    www.cocaineblunts.com
    http://www.prefixmag.com/media/1
    http://hype.non-standard.net/
    http://www.fluxblog.org/

Nadia--I think Barlow is still recording. I found a recent track of his online not too long ago...
    double thumbs up on

  • MichaelKeys wrote: [quote=caaahyoko][quote=erikka]speaking of iPods and such, a lot of my music is recorded at different levels, so the volume will be fine for one song and painfully loud for the next (without my touching the dial). Is there anything that can be done for that?
There is a setting on ipods called "sound check". It fixes the problem somewhat, but its not perfect. :)
Unfortunately, I've found the Sound Check feature to be mostly useless. It's the one thing iPods REALLY need improving on, in my book.

Yeah, I gave that a shot on my old iPod and my new one (shiny 30gb video---so shiny, so pretty!). I'm betting there's a software you can download somewhere...
  • Hey Michael?

    How's that Robyn Hitchcock album?

It's Globe of Frogs/Queen Elvis/Perspex Island-good. Maybe better. Highly recommended if you are a fan of the Egyptians.
Peter Buck and some of the other REM/Minus 5 guys are on it, too.
  • Cool. I am downloading it now from Yahoo Music, I use their subscription service, so it costs no more than everything else. Robyn falls into that category of artists I have meant to listen to more for years now.

Incidentally, I'm having a John Denver phase...

You're a brave man to admit that. :)

Steve, if you happen to be drinking when "Thank God I'm A Country Boy" comes on, have one for me.

I could get into that one, if I had enough likker in me. :D/
  • Subject: What are you listening to lately?

    KCRWmusic.com and monkeyradio.org

    Bent
    Radiohead
    The Dead 60s

    you?
  • Big Daddy Kane and Hot 97 and the Wendy Williams Experience.
  • There's actually a really active thread about this already in The Lounge and it doesn't really have anything to do with Prospect Heights, so I'm going to move this over to that board and merge it.

That said, I've been reading this great book about the underground music scene in the 80's called Our Band Could Be Your Life, so I've been listening to a lot of the bands featured in it -- not new music, but still great stuff, like the Minutemen, Mission of Burma, and Beat Happening.

I've been re-reading it myself, lately. And it made me think about how one of my favorite musical collaborators looks like a blonde Steve Albini. Yikes.

    The Minutemen were the shizzzat.
  • I found some old Reagan Youth and MDC. Did anyone listen to WFMU (91.1) in the afternoons in the early to mid '80's? They were the opposite of the mellow WNEW (102.7) back in the day.

    I was a WLIR/WDRE fan.
  • Yeah I always tried to get WLIR myself. Unfortunately I lived between 6th and 7th Aves. where the slope/top of the hill blocked the signal. I could always get it when I was in a car heading towards Queens. As an aside, I had a friend who lived in one of the tall plaza Street building (top floor) and he was able to get Channel 17 of Philly (with snow). It was always good to see Ultraman and Johnny Socko in the 'Lyn.
  • Ah, LIR/DRE...good times.

  • New old music: Clara Rockmore's Lost Theremin Album
  • I'm listening to the soundtrack of The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. Morricone is the Man.
  • Now it's not giving me a delete option.
  • idlewild, are your fingers tired?
