Poloce, Police, Police — Brooklynian

Poloce, Police, Police

My husband and I are looking at a place in Bed-Stuy on Greene between Bedford and Nostrand(although the brokers are calling it Clinton Hill!). There seems to be a large police presence in those blocks- is that a regular thing? and it sounds as if there are a few incidents of gun shot fire at night? is that usually related to drugs and domestic squabbles- meaning if you use your head and keep your eyes open you'll be fine. we love the neighborhood, but just would love any real info.
thanks

  • I live on Myrtle Avenue and there has been a strong police presence the whole time I've been living here (1.5 yrs.). The past several months the police have set up shop on the corner and they stay there all night. It's great for me because I always know where to find them should I need them. I seem to remember reading something about police "impact" neighborhoods that would be receiving greater police monitoring. Maybe what we are seeing is the Impact Program at work.

You sound like the type of folks who will be fine in that area since you recognize at the outset that you just have to be smart and keep your eyes open. I hope this feedback is somewhat helpful even though I'm in a different area of Bed-Stuy. :)
  • Subject: thanks

thanks for the info.-especially on the "impact" program. it was helpful. :D
  • I live on Lafayette and Bedford basically 3 doors from the mobile precinct parked outside the G station right there. The unit has been there for about 2-3 months now, and I talk to the cops there all the time. The reason they were initially sent out there was (is) that there is a problem with people breaking into the projects up on lafayette/dekalb and tearing ass down lafayette with whatever goods they have and jumping into that subway station for a getaway. This is why the entrances on that side of the street are closed also- plus apparently some chick got her house broken into on lafayette near nostrand and had like $30k in music equipment stolen. They also said they were having problems over the summer with sexual assaults down on Nostrand. The cops I've spoken to say also, like Changeling said, that they're going to be there for a while as a show of force. Every once in a while there will be like 15 cop cars parked outside my building for no apparent reason.

With all that said- I've lived here for months and am a single, 22 year old white chick and have had no problems whatsoever aside from the occasional cat call on my way to the grocery store. This area isnt somewhere I'd wander around after dark with headphones on, but I definitely leave my apartment regularly at night alone to grocery shop, go to bars in the area, etc.
You just have to be smart, like any neighborhood in the city. I don't feel any less safe here than I do in, lets say, alphabet city in manhattan. Its all about perspective, and I've actually found most of my neighbors to be really cool (even the homeless people "living" in the lot next door are hilarious and friendly in a not-creepy way.)

Good luck! I love the hood here.

OH and I'm pretty sure thats actually BedStuy in that area ;)
  • thanks for the feedback. my husband and i have been walking around the area during the day and at night. sat. night when we went to where we are hoping to live we were a little taken aback by all the police, but once we thought about it i guess it is better that they are there especially since there are some issues. but everyone is saying that they love the neighborhood, their neighbors etc. so we feel more at ease (like we did originally). we are excited about joining the community.

i think my husband wanted to make sure all was OK as he is a skinny white dude.

thanks for the well wishes- see you in the hood!!

seems like the general idea is be aware and

i just stumbled onto this, and am smiling because my husband and i are also moving to that block in a month or so and we have had the same conversations. we've lived in ft. greene for almost 20 years and still have had to get our heads around the idea of moving to bed stuy (we were here in the crack years) -even though it's on the "border" of clinton hill. we're not buying into negatives that the press has associated with bed stuy in the past-we're looking ahead. that block is gorgeous-and the area feels just like ft. greene did a few years back. as far as i can tell-the police presence is a good thing. get to know your neighbors, and use good judgement. see you soon!
  • I live closer to Fulton in Bed Stuy. We have loads of cops around also and I do think it's that operation impact thing. I lived in Ft Greene about 20 years ago also. The people in Bed Stuy are actually much more welcoming and friendly (sorry, Ft Greeners). You'll be fine.
  • that's good to hear- tho' my heart will always be in ft. greene...it's changed just a bit too much...losing the people that made it special-it's feeling very park slope lately. it's nice to have all of the amenities, but it's getting way too congested, and then with the arena- forget it! go bed stuy.
  • i lived in ft g from 80 - 85 (ft. greene lean & mean) & we used to get ripped off on a weekly basis. they'd steal at night then come back and sell it back to us the next day. in the ghetto. i just couldn't take the garbage & summer nights drunken brawling. my daughter just moved to bedstuy & the dealers on her corner made things a little uncomfortable for the white guys in her bldg, y'all thinkin' they're gettin' down with the homies til gangstas upped the ante, whities had to hightailed it to the slope. someone ripped off laptops, ipods.whatta ya expect. you're doin' the same to them aren't cha?
  • that block is amazing-clinton hill is technically just accross the street. there's a house new to the market listed by corcoran for 1.1, i think. the brownstones are beautiful. it was the same in ft. greene, and then ch...everything changes. people need to chill out, be cool to one another, and stop worrying so much.
