Slope Health Fitness or NYSC — Brooklynian

Slope Health Fitness or NYSC

edited November -1 in Park Slope
Hi. I'm looking to join a gym in Park Slope. Has anyone been
to the NYSC or Slope Health & Fitness on Union? I heard
it's very small, but the location is great for me. Not sure
if there any other good options in the area. Thanks!

  • Eastern Athletic Club is right at Grand Army Plaza, across from the Library (so it's Prospect Heights, not Park Slope). I like it - very down to earth, doesn't get really crowded. They have good trainers. Plus they have a 75' pool. I believe, with your membership you are also able to use their other facilities (which is good because they have limited hours on Saturday): two additional locations in Brooklyn: Brooklyn Heights and Metrotech, as well as Tribeca (Leonard Street, off of Broadway).
  • I belong to Park Slope Fitness CLub, on 7th & Union. It's not bad - it's clean, not crowded at the hours I go, and they've got a good selection of machines that I want to use. I'm not the pickiest or most discerning person when it comes to this sort of thing, but it does the job for me.
  • I've been a member of NYSC for several years now, and I've used several facilities in Manhattan as well as two in Brooklyn (the one in the Slope and the one on Boerum Place). I use the cardio equipment and weights on my own so I can't comment on the classes and trainers. The Slope branch is very pleasant and offers all the basic amenities and more. Everything's always been in good working order and there aren't oversize meatheads hogging the weights. The women's steam room is very good too.

Sure, NYSC is the McDonald's of gyms: slightly impersonal, interchangeable branches. But it's also very convenient--you can use all their locations--and I've never had a bad experience there.
  • Subject: Slope fitness is good.

I belong to Slope Fitness and I think it's pretty decent. It's still too 'busy' (tv's everywhere, music, etc...) but I think they all are. I've belonged to other chain clubs in Manhattan in the past and I just like the feel of it. I don't know the other ones in the area tho'.

    good luck deciding!

Thanks everyone! I'm going to check out Slope Health & Fitness this week.
  • the nysc on 9th & 5th in the slope is a pretty nice nysc. it's quite new and everything is always clean and in good working order (which is something for a nysc -- they don't exactly have the best reputation for keeping their gyms in order).

I just went to Slope Health & Fitness. It was crowded -- I had to wait to lift weights and felt like what could have been a 30 minute workout was getting dragged on forever. There were TVs on the treadmills, but they were broken. There was no music to drown out people grunting. The bathroom was trashed and there were holes in the towels (rags?). They should reduce their fees or provide better service.
  • does anyone have a membership to NYSC? How much are the memberships usually? My insurance plan offers the "passport" membership (which if good for all clubs in all cities) for around $80 a month and I don't know if that's a "good" deal or not, as their rates aren't listed on their site.
  • i go to nysc at 5th and 9th. it's a very nice gym...especially for nysc's in general. they can be hit or miss.

i'm up in the north slope and while slope health and fitness and crunch are much closer to me, i still prefer nysc for some reason.

i've been a member for years and had kinda gotten screwed on the price...but i just went in this weekend and cancelled my passport membership and started up again on gold because they are running a 69.00 a month special for the gold plan. that means 5th and 9th is your home gym then you can go to any other club during off-peak hours and weekends, i believe. it works out great for me and i'm paying about 30 bucks less than i was. i don't know how much the passport is.

i wish they'd open one up on flatbush or somewhere else up nearer to here.
  • Subject: NYSC

I like NYSC on 9th Street...I need to go to a gym I can walk to and it was that or the Y...I know the Y has improved but when I went years ago, it was awful and it just left a bad taste in my mouth.

Classes are good at NYSC as well (you have to find ones you like).
  • I go to the NYSC in Park Slope a lot. I like it. Clean, working TVs/machines and it's never crowded when I go --except the week after NY Eve

80 bucks a month sounds about right for a discounted membership for the passport version. I pay a bit less than that but got a "cheap" deal a few years ago and it only goes up a buck or so a year. A guy who works for me says he pays 80 a month and has the "gold" version.

If you have one near where you work, passport is great 'cause you can go at lunch (if you have time). If you plan to mostly use one or use others on "off peak" hours, then I agree you should go with the "gold" membership.

Oh and I regularly take the spin classes. They kick your ass (and I'm in good shape). I've done the yoga but never really got into it much, but my friends say they are good classes too.
