Best massage in the Slope?
Does anyone have recommendations for great massage in the Slope? I've tried Opal, but its not really my cup of tea - too hippy dippy for me. I've tried that newish Chinese place near Gorilla and while the massage is good, the place is unprofessional - the guy massaging you keeps stopping to go answer the phone or greet someone at the door about 6 times during a 45 minute massage. I'm looking for a GREAT massage, preferably something like shiatsu/acupressure. I like to get a massage biweekly. Anyone have any tips?

i want to preface this by saying that i have no first-hand knowledge of the place myself, but a lot of my friends speak highly of D'mai on 5th Ave. (and Lincoln, i think).

D'mai is very good.

Go over to Boerum Hill - Atlantic and Hoyt. Providence Day Spa. They're amazing, and go to great lengths to find the right therapist to suit your needs.
-
Thanks all. I've actually tried D'mai before and found that the quality of the massage depends on the particular therapist they've managed to hire that day. So there was no continuity in my experience.
The best local massage I've ever had are with my acupuncturist. I want to get a massage from her weekly but she tells me I do not need it, which is very annoying, because she is amazing.
I've heard of a woman called Eileen tHomas who works out of her home in the Slope. Has anyone tried her? -
Okay, this is not a fancy place by any means but Studio 97 gives a nice Swedish massage that will get the knots out of your neck. I usually go to Marsha, who is a little "handsy" but is very good.

Have you tried the Slope Health and Fitness? They have masseurs and you don't have to join the club, just buy message packages. -
I had a great massage recently at Sage.

Subject: some thoughts...
I've tried D'mai, Opal, Providence, Sage, and that place Spring Thyme on 7th Avenue that is at Carroll on the 2nd floor (good in a 'pinch' but definitely strange. they sometimes do one 'side' and you don't realize it til your time is up!).
I always think massages are too expensive for what they are. I know I will maybe not be popular saying this but should it really be that expensive and on top of it you give a tip?
Anyway, there's a woman who works out of her home on Union Street who has a business called Shining Star who I think is very good. It is somewhat spiritual in nature the way she works so I don't know if that would work for you. I can't remember her name right now! I went to her for awhile and then stopped. She also does reflexology. Might be better to go to a woman after your last experience.
Opal I had a bad experience but I do think they can be very good. I just went to the wrong person. Providence one time great experience ; next time not so hot. I went before they moved to Atlantic Avenue. Sage - I liked but there was something too business like about it. Even tho' the surroundings say 'relax.'
There's a woman whose brochure I picked up at Second Helpings recently who does aromatherapy massage. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with her. Jenny ... something? -

That's massage you fool!!! -
Subject: what is studio 97?
where is studio 97, by the way?
I would definitely like to spend 'less' than the going 'rate' of $90 (+ tip) and over for an hour! -

Hi, Studio 97 is on 7th and 9th street. Right above the new Burger joint. I had an hour long massage from handsy-Marsha yesterday and it was only $72. I have chronic problem with my neck and shoulders area plus a little carpal tunnel and she always gets rid of the pain, stress and knots.

wow. I never noticed that spot. Has it been there awhile? What else do they do there? $72 is a bit more in line. (although it used to be sort of guide of a $1 a minute at one point and that was good.) when you say she is "handsy."
what does that mean exactly? how did you hear the place? just walking in or a recommendation? -

I've also been to Spring Thyme and I agree that it is ok in a pinch. I'm not mad keen on the flimsy things separating each bed. I only had one massage at Opal and I didn't like it. The masseur's armpits were too pungent. LOL. -

Great!
I just remembered her name. It is Noga Kreiman-Miller.
For some reason, I was blanking on it, but it just came to me reading your response.
She's doing a lot of doula-type work now apparently but I'm sure she still also does massage. She has a website - something to do with Shining Star - so I'm sure a google search would unearth it!

Cat" By Handsy I mean she is a little more hands-on than I normally experience but she is NOT inappropriate by any means.
Its a nice place to go for a mani & pedi as well. They have been there for a little over a year (I think!) Its this nice little gem of a place I only recently discovered. -

thanks for the info! great to know. I'll definitely walk by and then maybe check it out. ! thx. -
Sure! Let me know what you think.

If you can smell your masseuse, that's a bad sign.
But that's totally *not* the experience I've had at Opal, and I have a very keen nose. And I was there in August. I've seen a couple different women there, all great so far. Can't recall their names . . . -
I've been to Sage several times. They offer all sorts of modalities and so far, each massage therapist that I've had has been great. If you like deep-tissue, I thought Karen and Serena were fantastic. I had a Shiatsu done by Jessie and that was really relaxing. And when I was sooooooo tense that my range of motion was limited and the pain in my neck and shoulders was giving me a headache, Jessie's myofascial massage made it all better. Plus, it's a cozy atmosphere, very clean, and they are very professional.

Subject: massage at the Slope Fitness
You should really try it out.
Ben is great.
You can also buy individual massage packages without the option of buying a whole memmbership.
I love it down there, and I'm not ashamed to admit it.
The Slope Fitness has upgraded their whole image, and it works . -
I tried one massage at Sage, and I was very disappointed. I went for the sports massage and felt that the girl (I cant remember her name) was afraid to touch me. It was a total waste of money, and I had to go elsewhere (outside of Brooklyn) the following week. The folks at Sage were nice though, but I also found the space too small and confining and uncomfortable. I couldnt wait to get out of there really... Too bad because I wanted to like it.
Others seem to have better results and their citysearch profile had raves, so maybe I had a bad experience. -
The Slope Health and Fitness has a great massage department. You don't have to join and it is not a major ordeal to book appointments.
-
Oh my god, ENOUGH with Slope Health and Fitness!! No one from this board is EVER going to go there after all this shilling!

YOU REALLY ARE CRABBY.
YOU NEED A MASSAGE!!!
GUESS WHERE? -
I assume you arent referring to the kind that conclude with a 'happy ending'?
-
Hahaha, I don't care what kind of massage they give you there, I am boycotting Slope Health and Fitness for being so damn annoying on this forum.
