Atlantic Center Eyeglass Scam — Brooklynian

Atlantic Center Eyeglass Scam

I had a friend who got jacked about two weeks ago. Here's what happened: As he was walking into A.C., a man bumped into him really hard then dropped his glasses onto the concrete, which were broken. He and his huge friend began screaming at him complaining about how much the glasses cost, etc. They pretty mcuh embarrassed/coerced him into ponying up $60 to compensate for breaking the glasses. They also gained public attention into thinking my friend bumped into him, not the other way around. The guy looked helplessly around for a cop, there were none. Kinda whack.

Anyway, if anyone "bumps" into someone who claims they have broken glasses because of the "bump", just know it is bullshit. A complete scam.

  • that sucks. This is a well known scam. It happens with other items too.
  • yes, and an OLD one, too. similar thing happened to my mother about 25 years ago. an oldie but a goodie, unfortunately.

sorry about your friend, LeeHo :( Thanks for the heads-up.
  • how are you supposed to handle it, anyway?
  • sorry to have happen to your friend. sounds terrible. i would be like excuse me buddy.
  • Someone (possibly the same dude) tried to run the same scam on me a year ago. Forturnately for me two friends had days earlier told me about this guy, who they'd encountered on the sidewalks of west side of Harlem. When he bumped into me in the Fashion District (on an empty sidewalk no less!) and followed me to say "yo!.. look what you did to my glasses", i couldn't believe it! I simply said to him "yo!.. i've heard of you!". He got flusterred as hell and said back "heard of me? what do you mean 'heard of me'? I'm not even from here. Forget it."

And that was that. If this kind of retort isn't an option, i'd recommend saying "okay...let's contact the police and do this right".
  • OMG! this happend to a friend of mine... he works in the city... he was goin to pick up his lunch when this 'big' dude bumped into him... the sidewalk was crowded and the dude made a scene. my bud ended up robbed. careful out there folks...

i agree with izisharp... get loud right back.
