Valentine's Day Ideas Anyone?
Subject: Valentine's Day Ideas Anyone?
Hi All,I'm looking for some creative ideas (but not kinky or kooky ones involving whip cream) for Valentine's Day this year - either for gifts, places to go, things to see and do, etc. Any suggestions? Stories of your own you can share? This is the first time I am actually doing something for a guy on Valentine's Day, so I'm nervous... and at a loss. I swear I wasn't born yesterday, just trying to change my old school ways... 8-[

I like to make romantic spicy red sauce dinner at home
something totally easy: pasta, salad, and a good red wine
and never go to a restaurant on Vday -
No restaurants on VD. Blech. Much better to do something special and private.....
-
Agree (with both of you) and the "private and special" are what make me nervous! I'd love to look like Giada or Nigella Lawson while I'm cooking (everything looks so scrumptuos and strangely sexy) but I'm afraid I'll just look like my granny with all the old pots and such. I need that personal chef guy on the Food Channel who finds people in the market and goes to their house and cooks. He's adorable. Or, maybe some nicer kitchen stuff.

Well, if I might plug my own thing, I'm putting on a show that makes for an interesting something-to-do on Valentine's Day. I run an all-blogger reading/performance series called the WYSIWYG Talent Show and February 14 is our fourth annual anti-Valentine's Day show "Worst. Sex. Ever. IV: Getting It Ain't Getting Any Better," in which a bunch of people of various sexual orientation will be telling stories about bad, bad, bad sex. It's always *really* funny. It's at Bowery Poetry Club at 8pm (doors open at 7:30) and the cost is $7; there's a full bar and you have to be 18 to enter, 21 to drink. We'll be putting the lineup on our website by the end of the week.

I don't think the guy is going to care so much about your cooking stuff!
If you can't cook, get something that you can just throw togther - like a fresh pasta and sauce, some bread, a little mixed greens, some good cheese, red wine. Simple and delicious (and coincidently, what was cooked for me this weekend
). -
Yeah, I'm probably the picky one. I get grossed out watching people cook if they aren't tidy or wash their hand alot or keep the counters clean.

Well, it's definitely raunchy, but reeeally funny. Last year, one of the stories was by a guy who hooked up with a woman back when he was in college, while they were on shrooms, which he says was awesome until he started hallucinating that her lady parts were turning into an evil vortex. Then he got sick. And there was a woman who once worked at a phone sex line and had a caller who wanted her to pretend he was Jacques Cousteau. He was faking a French accent and she had to talk to him while blowing bubbles into a glass of water with a straw. She re-enacted the whole thing (well, her end of the call, anyway) and I was laughing so hard I nearly wet my pants. At our very first show, I told this story about how I was dating this girl who worked at a group home for developmentally disabled men; she called me and asked me to come by because she had a Valentine's Day present for me, and when I showed up she blindfolded me and dragged me into the house and into her bedroom. Kinda hard to really enjoy things with your girlfriend when there's a guy pounding on the door screaming, "I crapped my paaaaants!"

Anyway, so yeah, it's dirty, but fun dirty. Lots of people bring dates for something different to do for Valentine's Day! -

apollonia666, hilarious

GiGi, for what it's worth, and from a guy's perspective, I can tell you that going to Apollonia666's show sounds like a blast and really worth checking out. But probably NOT on your first Valentine's Day with a guy. Especially one called "Worst. Sex. Ever." It seems like the kinda thing that couples that have been together for a bit would be more at ease with. Then again, he might be into it. But unless you are absolutely sure that he'd be cool with it you probably shouldn't risk it; he might just say yes to please you and you'd end up dragging a dude into a situation he might not enjoy. On Valentine's Day. (Ah, memories...) And anyway, isn't it too early for you to be dragging him anywhere?
If you stay in and cook, trust me, at this stage just the effort wins you major points. (Again, FWIW: The last time I dined out on Valentine's the GF at the time and I had a nice meal at 12th St.)
Apollonia666: NOT hating on your show AT ALL. Just putting in the average guy's 2 pennies in the pot under these circumstances. -
as a guy i approve the idea of food!!!

Gigi - have you thought about a nice lasagna dish - one pan - in the oven - no mess with a nice mixed green salad. For dessert may I suggest a nice fruit tray with some nice dips (I love cream cheese, heavy cream and amaretto) and/or whip cream and/or some melted chocolate. My husband and I used to love to put all our candles in our living room and have a picnic on the floor (be careful if you have rugs this could lead to rug burns - [only if your lucky])!
Appollonia - that sounds like a really fun night. I would love to check it out. When I told my husband about it - it made us think of the time we got busted in his room by his sweet 80 year old religious pentacostal abuella who from that day forward would roll her eyes upward to the heavens and make the sign of the cross whenever she said hello to me. Thank God I married him because those looks made me scared

Hey, she asked about unusual events/things to do, so I piped up! But you definitely have a good point. I have no idea how long Gigi's been with her fella. -
I might be sorry but I'm totally willing to take a risk by going to Appollonia's event! It's just that I teach and am always afraid of ending up on the front page of the school newsletter or something. I appreciate all the suggestions (especially hearing the guys' perspective). Lasagna sounds great since I have few kitchen items. My other thought was a bunch of stuff from Blue Apron. That way all I need to buy is a nice platter or something that I could arrange/decorate. At least I know how to make things look pretty. :-k

Sounds like a plan, Missy. Good luck to you both. -
If you do end up coming to the show, please say hi! And I should warn you that it'll probably sell out, but Bowery Poetry Club allows people to stop by earlier in the evening and buy tickets in advance.

I thought this was funny . . .
Looking for a fun date night? How about a wine tasting in the company of world-famous sex therapist Dr. Ruth? Priming the pump for Valentine's Day, Bottlerocket welcomes the wise and witty Dr. Ruth for two hours of sex tips and wine.
Mark your calendars: Tuesday, February 13, 6 to 8 pm. Like all Bottlerocket Eclectic Salon nights, this event is free and no reservations are required.

some restaurants (ici, in fort greene, e.g.; i've never been, but i'm dying to try it someday) offer a vd takeout special if you want to try to combine the dining out with the dining in.

You don't have cook a lot to have a great dinner. Go to Stinky Cheese on Smith St, or any local cheese shop, and get a nice cheese tray and some crusty bread and wine to go with it. You can throw in some fruit and chocolates too.
For the main course, you can toss together some mixed greens in a balsamic dressing, topped with cherry tomatoes and maybe some feta. You can make a simple pasta dish with store bought tortellini and a good sauce.
=P~
Wine and food. A match made in heaven. -
I can totally LIVE on this cheese plate menu. Sounds like the best plan... and possibly Appollonia's show if I go in disguise.

Oh, hey, for what it's worth, it looks like we may be able to sell advance tickets after all -- just waiting to get the go-ahead from the folks at BPC. I'll post the info here for y'all.
And really, Gigi, nothing to worry about. The people in our audiences tend to be pretty normal.

Btw, are you bringing your Valentine to the show? -
Take the free Staten Island Ferry past the Statue of Liberty, open a bottle of wine, drink it out of the bottle while looking at the skyline. Give him a gift on the ride back from the Island. Boys do like chocolates, get him a small box from a fancy chocolatier (not Godiva) and maybe a DVD or book of something obscure by a director or author he likes, or a copy of your favourite book. Then follow it up with tapas. Tapas are sexy.
Thats what I would do.. -
Oh how truly dreamy Anotherdayinbklyn! I simply adore this idea. In addition to stinky cheese, tapas places are actually my favorite restaurants. There's a new one I tried - Boqueria - and it was really tasty.
I feel compelled to report back here with rich description after V-day!
Thanks

well what i'm doing is making one of those photo albums for v-day from kodak.com easy share. martha stewart talked about it on her show. they make you a book, not just print out copies of your own uploaded photos. Then I reserved tickets for the Daily Show for the night of the 13th.
