Reliable cell service?
I have Nextel through my parents plan but it's just awful. I get terrible reception on 7th Ave and frequently get cut off all throughout the Slope. I recently moved to PH/CH (on the border, I think) and the reception is only slightly better there. I'm trying to figure out which company has the best reception in Park Slope and the surrounding areas so we can switch.
Any thoughts? What are your experiences with Verizon, Cingular, etc? I really appreciate the help, thanks!

Here's my vote for Verizon. I had them for years, had excellent reception all over NYC, in BKLYN and travelling up to see my family in VT. Loved them. Then - foolishly - I switched to Sprint and my boyfriend's plan in order to save some $$...and it's staticky and not good. And doesn't come in at all in large sections of New England.

I have Verizon, live in PH and it has always been reliable and I get good reception

I had Verizon for many years. Signal was great.
At the time (6 months ago) they had no good phone options that were GSM compatible, which was important for me to travel to Europe.
When I decided to get a blackberry, I went with T-mo because they had the best price plans.
My coverage is really good. There is a small area on 5th Ave. near 12th Street (ironically, right near the T-mo store) that has no signal, but other than that, no problems. -
I just bought a Treo from Sprint 2 months ago, though i'm considering switching over to Verizion because I dont always receive my voicemails or text messages. And lately, Ive been receiving them at a 3-4 hour delay, and i just cant deal anymore (i'm willing to pay the fee to get out of my 2 year contract.)
I'm assuming i'd have to buy a new Treo from verizon since i couldnt use my Sprint Treo with Verizon, right? I havent switched carriers in so long i dont know how much of an investment/big deal it would be to switch carriers....any advice is appreciated. -
I switched carriers (although my contract was finished).
You have a few options - one is to buy your new Treo via Amazon. Somebody here suggested that to me (I would have never thought of it). I managed to pick my phone/blackberry and calling plan and saved a ton of money.
Try to get your Treo "unlocked" and move it to Verizon. I don't know exactly how to go about this (I'm sure if you do a google search you'll find tons of info), but I know it can be done.... -
Thanks Flexi, i'll look into it. I'm willing to go through all the effort to ditch those idiots over at Sprint!!

Had Verizon while living in the Slope for 5 years now. Only service that gives a signal in my basement apartment. Never had a problem and I can count the number of dropped calls on one hand.

Verizon is annoying b/c they dont have the best phones and the ones they have ,they lockdown features (like ringtones and messaging) so you have to use their 'extra' services but Verizon has by far the best service, it is almost like one of those 'portable' Army phones circa 1955 - where you are carrying the wire behind you. Always clear and never a dropped call
-
Another vote for vereizon. They are the only ones that still have some of the old analog network so if you are going to the Adirondacks or Vermont you still get signal

I had verizon here, and I must be the only one who never got reception with them! And this was after 3 phones, too. I couldn't get reception on PPW, 7th Avenue, anywhere. It was shoddy at best. When I was in Manhattan, I'd be walking on Prince street, but if I turned on to say, Mercer, the call would drop completely. Terrible service, I thought. I went to Cingular, and I'm really happy with them.
