Armchairwarrior,
I passed by a place called Milan's on 5th Ave & 22nd St. the other night and looked at the menu. It's Slovakian food so you'd probably find the kind of dishes you might be craving... goulash, stuffed cabbage, sauerkraut, kielbasa, dumplings, crepes, etc. If you happen to go there, let me know if it's worth a visit. -
Did you try Citysearch?

just did city search
.
wow there isnt that many. -
I believe the big Russian markets in Brighton beach sell Hungarian goods like salami, canned goods, etc. Outside of Russian, Ukrainian and Polish I don't see that many Eastern Euro/Slavic restaurants in NYC.

There used to be Mocca Hungarian on the Upper East Side, but it closed. I think their chef went to some Italian/Diner place a few blocks away, and the Hungarian stuff was added to that menu, but I don't remember the name. Not a restaurant, but the Yorkville Packing House on 2nd Ave and 81st has an amazing array of Hungarian products and meats. They have at least a dozen different varieties of dried ready-to-eat sausages, and 6 or 8 different kinds of bacon! That place is one of the few things I miss since moving out of that neighborhood.

Out of curiosity, would this search for a Hungarian place have anything to do with "the best three days of your life" you posted elsewhere? Sorry, but I had to ask as my nosey little self is making all sorts of connections...

There are some really good Austrian places that have some Hungarian-influenced food on the menu. Some of these would include Cafe Sabarsky, Wallse, Danube, or (right across from BAM) Thomas Biesl.
Warning: some of these (Wallse, Danube) are pretty pricey.
