Keyspan Gas Bills
My mom has a two family 13 ft home in Clinton Hill that for the last 2 years has racked up impossible $900- $1300 bills from Keyspan. These charges were in May when the whether was warm! i wonder if anyone else has seen their bills go up 194% in the last 2 years '05-06'? It just seems astounding that 2 people can have a bill that went from $3400 to over $6000 in the space of a year. Any thoughts? Also does anyone know how to fight this type of thing?

When I first moved here a year and a half ago my first Keyspan bill arrived in October and it was over $400. I had not paid for gas in my previous place, so I had no idea how much it would cost. I thought it was rather high for that time of year, but I shrugged my shoulders and paid it. The next bill came eight weeks later and it was $1900. I knew then that something was wrong. I called them immediately and told them that I wouldn't be paying this bill because there was obviously something wrong. We weren't even in the coldest part of the year! The rep. told me that they could send someone out to take a look at the meter, and that there had been a problem with one of the other meters in the building. So apparently other people in the building had been overcharged because something was wrong with the meter, and Keyspan didn't think to check ALL of the meters in the building to correct the problem! At first the rep. said that they wouldn't be able to send someone immediately. The earliest available appointment was a couple of weeks away. I told her that the bill was due before that earliest appointment, and that I would not pay the bill until someone came out and checked the meter. Suddenly, an earlier appointment was available! They would send someone out the day after tomorrow.
They came. A day later I logged into my account online and it said that I had a $400 credit. So I didn't owe them $1900, they owed me $400!!! I MARCHED down to Keyspan and told them IN PERSON that I wanted my money. After overcharging me I wasn't going to let them hold my money as a credit. The rep. was nice and she said that she would send out a check and I should receive it within a few days. It came three days later and I haven't had any problems since.
Keyspan is a shady-shade tree company and they will overcharge you in a minute and not think anything about it. Call them and then go down there, no, MARCH DOWN THERE, and get your hard-earned money back. Good luck.
