No, but I love Urban Optical on 7th Ave/9th St.

Subject: Two thumbs up!
Eyes on the Slope's staff is friendly.
The doctor at Eyes on the Slope caught an eye problem that all the other opthamologists I've seen within the last five years have missed. So, I finally have lens that work. Before the doctor caught the problem, I thought I was helplessly blind.
I've received bad service from Lenscrafters on 5th Avenue in Manhattan. I felt like I was invisible in a crowd of workers running around the floor in apparent confusion.
Stylish glasses at both Lenscrafters and Eyes on the Slope cost a small fortune without eye health insurance. -
I like Urban Optical too.

I went to Eyes on the Slope. The eye doctor they employ was thorough, and I really liked the service I got from the owner and his son. The eyeglasses I bought from them are still going strong, and when they needed a small repair last fall it was fast and painless going back.

never go to the Park View Optical in Windsor Terrace
they are awful and fuck up all your glasses.
i took two pairs of designer frames as did my boyfriend and they made his look like girly cat-eyes and made my cat eyes look like droopy miserable things.
don't trust them to your frames.
ever.
they'll quote you a cheap price and not include all the charges and then when you go in it'll be at least a hundred dollars more than they quotes.
stay away.
save yourselfs!
don't make the same mistake we did!

mod note: I moved the subject line "never go to the Park View Optical in Windsor Terrace" into the body of this post, because it changes the clarifies what this poster is meaning to say.
Guest poster: the subject line is practically buried on thread responses... -
I went once to the place on 7th ave & 11 st but the dudes toupee was too much of a distraction.
I think I'll stick with the place on PPW since I got my first pair of glasses there 21 years ago -

I recommend Eyes. The owners are very nice. Great service! -
I'm picky about getting my prescription right. Eyes On The Slope's in-house doctor (Loy?) spent more time with me than any tech ever did, even at my Park Ave ophthalmologist. And I like Eddie (the owner?) he's friendly and very good at matching faces to glass frames.
-
i've gotten my last two pairs of glasses from 'eyes on the slope' and i recommend them
their opthalmologists know what they're doing. and they have a great selection, which is the main reason i keep going back
the owners are very attentive and make sure to fit the right frame for your face
in my experience they won't sell you something you don't look good in
and their glasses last
of course they're not cheap, but who is in park slope? -
I haven't dealt with the opthamologists there, but my husband has, and he said they were fine. If you're getting new glasses, try to get one of the guys to help you out because the woman doesn't seem to have as much knowledge about what best fits a person's face and style. If you have a more complex prescription, however (like astigmatism), or your previous prescriptions have never seemed quite right, you might want to check out Cooper eye care in Manhattan - they have a new machine that measures more than just near/farsightedness and astigmatism, and claims to virtually eliminate halos around lights that can occur at night. This is only worthwhile if you wear glasses, because they can't make contact lenses that follow the complex prescription. They also have a machine that takes a picture of your retina, which shows more than normal retina exams and has the added benefit of being a printed picture that you can keep as part of your permanent record. I just went there (can you guess?) and really liked the doctors.

I've never been to Eyes on the Slope myself but someone else I know who went said they screwed up her glasses. She was not happy with the service she received there and said she wouldn't go back.
I've been to Urban Optical for eye exams, contacts, and glasses over the past few years and never had a problem. It can get a little crowded in there since it's a small shop but I've always gotten good service there. I'd say the prices are about the same as the other shops I had checked out in Park Slope. -
The doctor who examined my eyes at Eyes on the Slope was EXCELLENT. The sales people are always friendly.
If only glasses were less expensive.... -
are there actual opthamologists at either place or optometrists?
-
I'm not sure. I believe Adam Friedland (Urban Optical) has an "OD" in his title but to be honest I don't know for sure which that is. You'd have to call and ask. Here's their info:
Business Name : Urban Optical
Contact Name : Adam Friedland
Address : 330 Seventh Avenue, corner of 9th Street
Telephone Number : 718-832-3513 -
that's an optometrist, an opthamologist has an MD (not saying which is better, just explaining)
-
ok, cool... thanks for the clarification. I know the difference between what they do but I could never remember how to know which was which by title. You might call them to verify though because as I said... I don't know for sure. Good luck!

If you just need someone to prescribe you the right glasses, an optometrist is fine. If there's something wrong with your eyes besides refractive error, you need an ophthalmologist (almost always misspelled by everybody, including MDs, by the way).
