Got sick from Castro's — Brooklynian

Got sick from Castro's

Subject: Got sick from Castro's

So the wife and I got food from Castro's on Wed night. Had the Sante Fe burrito and the the tortilla chips with the works. Next moring, at about 7 am I got violently ill. It lasted for about 36 hours, just getting over it now. I checked with the Dept of Health and there is no record of an inspection of Castro's ever being done.

Man, I liked Castro's but no more. Since they remodeled and raised their prices, their food has declined to the point of making me sick.

Did you call the D.O.H. and register a complaint? If you don't say anything nothing will change.

A few friends and I got sick from a manhattan pizzeria last month. We called 311 and the DOH and it got inspected.

Grandzu - there has been a terrible terrible stomach flu going around and myself as well as quite a few co-workers got it. It happed to two of us right after we had lunch together and it lasted almost 3 days. When I asked a doctor friend if he thought it was food poisoning he said no because food poisoning usually lasts about 24 hours.
  • The worst of it lasted about 24 hours. I still have the headaches. This has all the signs of food poisoning.
  • Grandzu - what are the signs of food poisoning? I think I got it from some ground beef I purchased at Back to the Land. The meat tasted like POO and then I was sick for 24 hours with violent diarrhea and halucinations.

Yes. She imagined she graduated from Oxford and was a published author.

I also hold Bachelors' from Yale, Princeton and Bennington and got my graduate degree from Stanford.

    Exactly...
  • Why on earth would you eat meat AFTER you'd decided it tasted like POO?

Seems like all that edumacation let you down.
  • Its not rocket science, Nathan. I placed a forkful of meat in my mouth and swallowed. Then I said to myself, GEE - that tasted like poo. Then I threw the rest of the meat straight into the trash can. You can't know that meat tastes like poo until you actually taste it.......
  • Ah, but I have super powers. First among them is the ability to be able to know that certain foods will taste like POO by merely glancing at them.

I can also stir Iced Tea from across the room, but please don't tell the government.

I agree it sounds like that awful stomach bug.
I have never been so sick in my life and was convinced it was food poisoning until other people I know started getting it too. (I was one of the first I knew, back in early December). I spent 3 days sicker than I have ever been, inches from checking myself into a hospital, to weak to sit up and feed myself soup. and let me tell you, the headaches were god-awful-- not the least of which was from caffeine withdrawl and spending a day and a half puking every two seconds until there was nothing left in me and i didn't even have the strength to wretch anymore. 3 days later I felt much better but was way to afraid to eat. took a good week before I was 100% again.

so it sounds kinda like what you are describing.

i wouldn't rule out the restaurant yet. if it was a problem, other people would have gotten sick from the food that night too. probably including the workers.
  • I'm interested to know how it was that mypasswordwontwork knows what POO tastes like. Is that what an Ivy league education gets you nowadays? mmmm

as some people said above, i think one of the main ways to tell food poising from a flu bug is that food poising symptoms typically only last for 24 hours and then are gone.

that's what happened to me a while back
  • Symptoms are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea with no fever and non severe abdominal pain. The symptoms would manifest themselves about 6 hours after eating the questionable food and last roughly 24 hours.

The worst thing, other than the actual sickness, is that you actually swallowed someones poo, because 99.9% of contamination is fecal-oral route. Way to go Castro's.
  • Almost everyone I know has had a stomach virus this past month, with the symptoms you describe. It's nasty! I honestly don't know of Castro's, but you should be sure before you slander an establishment.
  • Since I never actually spoke with anyone on this board regarding Castro, no slander was committed.
If you mean libel, then what I experienced has to be proven false to be defamatory.
This was not stomach virus because that takes up to 2 days to show symptoms and is accompanied by a fever and abdominal cramps, neither of which I had.
Lets see if Castro's gets inspected by the Health Dept and what the results are. Buckets of vomit say I'm right.
  • Just had Castro yesterday. No problems :D

BTW, did your wife get sick too?
  • good way to slim down after putting on those holiday pounds...
  • supergirl wrote: BTW, did your wife get sick too?
No, she fortunately did not have the Sante Fe burrito as I did, and did not get sick.
  • I'd like to make a snarky comment about how at ethnic restaurants we're better off sticking to food consistent with the theme but this is no joke - getting really sick is bad. Still, bad as this is, this hasn't changed my opinion that there is no better hangover cure than crawling to Castro's for 2 veggie tacos.

My wife believes she got sick from some bad lobster at Jean Georges. I used to work at a high fallutin' rest. and - on my day off, thank god - like 1/2 the staff ate some shark steaks that turned out to be bad. No only did they get reprimanded for stealing, but also horribly ill. In other words, even at well known fancy pants places, these things can happen.

All this is to say that, regardless of did or didn't happen to grandzu, I'd need to see a bad inspection (or experience something bad there myself - like the gigantic roaches running up and down the walls at Chez Oscar the final time I went there) before I stopped going to what I consider the best mexican in the nabe.
  • you know what's weird? i just looked through the DOH's inspection website and they list Castro's under the name "El Patio Mexicana" (same address at 511 Myrtle). has anybody ever heard it referred to as such? anyway, at their last inspection they had 17 violation points, which sounds worse than it is.

my roommate was sick this past week, seemed like food poisoning, but now i wonder if she didn't get that bug that's going around. food poisoning can happen anywhere, my old girlfriend got violently ill after some bad mussels at Al Di La. actually, she got food poisoning a few times form various places. some people are just more susceptible i guess.
  • oh if you want to check out the DOH Inspection site, it's pretty interesting:

    http://home2.nyc.gov/html/doh/html/rii/index.shtml
  • i've gotten sick from tons of places - fancy places are not excluded - but it's never lasted more than a day until it's...ummm...passed thru your system. makes me think you've got the stomach flu...which i had too once. lasted a month and similar symptoms. i couldn't hold anything solid in.

anyway, last time in castro's i saw, unfortunately, a roach. it didn't freak me out, i use to live in chinatown...talk about dirty, but my dining companion flipped. now we can't go back. so sad as it it good mexican food at a reasonable price.
