Eww! I passed by there on the bus last night and that font on the sign/building was bad enough.arielbl wrote: Walked past old city lighting/ new burrito bar. They're putting up the ugliest sign I have EVER seen. 3-foot-rainbow neon letters <shudder>

The full name of the place is, creatively enough, "Burrito Bar and Kitchen" ...JUST IN CASE IT WAS UNCLEAR THAT THEIR RESTAURANT HAS A PLACE WHERE FOOD IS PREPARED.

It's unfortunately also clear that they have decided to forego any attempt at real Mexican food in favor of a "frat boy" type theme.
They have fucking Corona banners!
It's like a faux Upper East Side Mexican restaurant.
They're not even open yet and I'm hoping they'll close. And I was looking forward to that place's opening. -
it looks like a restaurant at Sesame Place!!! argh!!
-
I wouldn't be too harsh with the Coronas. In the U.S. it is a frat thing. But overseas, it's not as frat-ish if that makes any sense.
But if a Muppet buses my table I will be leaving the biggest tip ever. Unless it's Telly. Then he can go ram it. -

i'll have to add if elmo waits on me at brunch i might have to strangle him. can't handle that high-pitched voice before i've had two cups of joe. -
I predicted this level of lameness some months ago and others told me to wait and see. It sucks that something so lame is going there, but I think the windows will be a nice addition for whoever takes over the place next. This place is going to tank. The only question is how fast. Perhaps we should have a DailyHeights pool to guess when it goes under...
-
C'mon now kids, lets give it a chance - they haven't even served one taco yet...Why all this doom and gloom? And no, I am not in any way affiliated with the proprietor, staff or suppliers. Just think we should check the place out first and then slam them full throttle if need be.

Nah, let's just be brats and trash 'em...
Yeah you're right, but I'm not going to be the first one to try it. That sign.... -

I'm thinking Janice is the most likely muppet to be waiting tables. -
i saw the sign today as well, and it looks silly as all hell. it's true, the place will probably be lame and all, but i'd agree with the 'don't knock it 'til you try it' idea... after all, despite the stigma associated with coronas, they are delicious. What if this place actually has really good burritos?

I fear that, as it is called "Burrito Bar and Kitchen" (with the kitchen as if it was an afterthought), that the emphasis will be on booze, not food. Alright, alright, I'll give it a chance, but I can have my fears, can't I? -
i will wait and see how the food tastes, because as long as a place has food, i wouldn't care if there was a celine dion impersonator floor show, i'd still eat there.
though this seems more like the joint to have an el vez impersonator floor show. -

actually, celine dion would make me vomit. but I will give the place a chance.

so. their soundtrack. any votes for buena vista social club, the mexican restaurant's favorite (busted) way to access sexy hispanic culture?

We walked by there earlier today and I have to say that I was quite surprised: I was prepared for an unattractive sign, but I wasn't prepared for such a fugly sign, or one that was so very large. Wow. They're going to have to have some damned good food to make up for that.
-
Hey I don't care how ugly the sign is...if the margaritas are good and they have some decent nachos...I'm there!
-
Yea, man, this really makes my blood boil! I couldn't sleep last night due to my rage over this eyesore of a sign. Those of you who predict that the food will suck are spot on! Decades of research have revealed an inverse relationship between the attractiveness of a restaurant's sign and the quality of its food. Furthermore, I suspect that Ratner is involved. It' all part of the conspiracy!

Sarcasm noted, but I think you mean a direct relationship, not an inverse one. -
hopefully the ugly sign will drive down the rent prices in the area. Sucks that so many yuppies had to move in and destroy the market for normal working class people
-
If it only worked that way, then Union Square and Midtown would be the cheapest neighborhoods in town!

The sign matches the new Nextel sign, which is awful.
I don't like Corona... I will probably try once anyway.
& I agree that Prospect Heights is getting far too expensive... & I think additions like the Burrito Bar & Kitchen signals more yuppies not less. -

well, we are in the US after all...
also: to those of us who totally called the lameness of this place weeks ago... it looks like, unfortunately, we're right.   -
I just drove by to see for myself... I had the same reaction as EmilyM. The sign is SOOOO ugly... I hope their food and drink make up for it....

youd think that if it strikes the majority of us level-headed potential consumers as ugly, it would dawn on the owners that it was ugly...
i mean, honestly. what are people thinking? are they intentionally going for some crappy theme or are they just that out of touch that they thyink it actually looks good? -
That's what I keep wondering. I mean, there's too big, and there's too colorful, and those are pretty common problems. But this sign features typography from the seventh circle of Hell. Who on earth designed it?

I spent a bunch of years in ad design and I came to know this much...people are fucking retards and should sometimes just die. I'd see $30-60k ads that looked like the end result of stealing grandma outta the home, smoking a shitload of crack with her and dumping her in front of photoshop. I mean horrible, painful wretched shit and some asshole thinks it "pops" and is a good thing. It defied sanity. I can only assume the same phenomena has recurred here with this barfalicious burrito sign. -
daveb wrote: some asshole thinks it "pops" and is a good thing.
Oh man, I've learned to dread that phrase. Whenever something "pops," it looks like someone made it on an acid trip. -
i will definatley give this place a try as its in the neighborhood.
but i am predicting a very quick crash and burn.
the name, the sign, just the feel - as mentioned - of upper east side frat-boy faux mexican about the place are some dangerously bad omens.
as also mentioned, the new windows are great for the next owners.
its too bad really, i hope the spot doesn't get a "cursed" reputaion, because i think i could be great.
i kept going to city lighting even though it was one of the worst managed restaraunts i've ever been in. most of the staff was always trying hard, but it was obvious to me the clock was ticking on the place.
good luck to the next place, sorry but i can't really root for this place. -
Y'all must be talking about a sign that faces Flatbush, 'cause I saw the one on the Prospect side this morning, and it...looked fine. No neon, so either it wasn't lit yet, or I was looking at the wrong sign. Also, the exterior didn't match up with the Hendrix and other posters I saw during construction.
Not like burritos are part of the regimen right now anyway.
-
Yes, the small sign facing Prospect is not nearly as offensive as the one facing Flatbush, although the one facing Flatbush has a somewhat temporary feel -- I'm hoping it's a banner they are putting up temporarily to draw attention to themselves ... it's pretty bad.
Howdy, Stranger!
