Stroller Derby Anyone?
After what will undoubtedly be my last daytime visit to the Tea Lounge ever, I feel compelled to post this rant about the Stroller Mafia. Ladies, the place is not a daycare center. The people who actually spend money there and can see over the counter don't want to be tripping over pacifiers and strolllers, anymore than you would want a bunch of hispter teenagers lurking around your kid's daycare center.
I know, I know, Tea Lounge shameless panders for your stroller dollars and you have every right to be there. However, try to be a little bit curteous and remeber that not everyone is excited that stay-at-home mommies have a cozy haven in which to congregate. In addition to the stroller hazards, and loud, spirited sing alongs of "Old Macdonald" I have recently had one of your little adorable kiddos stick his hand in my food, and one of you was kind enough to breastfeed on the couch next to me.

lol. As someone who works from home a lot, I feel your pain. The free internet access at Tea Lounge is great, but the Stroller mafia is absolutely unbearable. Ozzies on 5th ave. is more conducive to productive work, but the fact that you have to pay for wi-fi sucks.
I wouldn't mind the kiddie singalongs, etc. but the kids who run around like its romper room with nannies/moms who couldn't care less is intolerable. Never mind the incessant screaming and crying. One actually came up to my desk, and started hitting keys on my computer while the mom just kept talking to her friend. Not wanting to actually touch someone else's kid, when he wouldn't stop upon my asking nicely, I yelled at the kid "Get away from that, kid!", and he started crying. the mom had the nerve to give me a dirty look.
Just pony up the cash and just go to Ozzies. there is no arguing with the stroller mafia. they think they own that place. mostly because tea lounge wants them to think that they do. -

WWF Smackdown! Mommies Vs. Childless
Round One: BEGIN! -
No, I don't think it's Mommies Vs. Childless. It's People Who Realize that they Don't live in a vacuum and that the messiah hath not cometh in their child and those who haven't a clue, are rude, and 10 to 1, not real New Yorkers, watch too much Sex and the City and who don't get that when you have children, sometimes, your social life needs to suffer a bit in order to actually raise and discipline your child.

They say you learn something every day, and I just met my quota. I don't frequent The Tea Lounge, but these posts are always coming up: "I hate teh tea lounge, strollers, brats, mommi3s, I don't like why why why". Which is cool, it's not my scene either, so I don't go. People seemed to be taking it very personally, however, which I found odd; outside of the kids the place is ok, but really nothing to get in a lather about. Now I understand that the problem is the free wifi - everybody likes free, and I'm sure that its presence causes many an anguished inner debate over whether it will be worth it to brave the Romper Room crowd. Anyhow, gooner, my compliments on having the right idea - just go elsewhere and spend a few bucks instead of being miserable in the name of getting something for nothing.
As far as the mommies owning the joint goes, well, I'm sure they at least pay the rent. -
Didn't we just have this thread?
If you don't want to be around little kids, why would you hang out in a place that hosts regular sing-alongs and storytimes for little kids? -
Rose wrote: Didn't we just have this thread?
It's the free wifi. I'm convinced that if Ozzie's offered it up, The Tea Lounge would never again be mentioned on this board. Hopefully they will.

But is it the free WiFi or perhaps it is those free sing-alongs? -

As someone who also works from home a lot, I work from home a lot. I agree that a cafe is not a day care center but neither is it an office. No, that doesn't excuse untrammeled preschool wilding--but if you work in public, sometimes the public's going to cramp your style.
Yes, it's a drag to have to work all the time in a small apartment without a separate office... or to have to pay for high-speed Internet at home... or to stare at the same four walls all the time. But people say all the time to parents here that, yes, it's a drag being cramped at home with kids, but in public you can't expect the rest of the world to bend to your needs, so you just have to suck it up and deal, and if you can't deal, don't go out. Well, the same goes for telecommuters. -
The world needs more Stroller MILF.

I'm with you on the singalongs and the hands-in-the-food but not the breastfeeding. They have every right, legal and otherwise. -

I dont know about "the world" but Park Slope could certainly use more 'eye candy'- there are an abundance of Stroller Moms but very very few in the ILF category. -

Thankfully God bestowed various methods of birth-control upon the masses. -
Could you please move this conversation over to the 115 post rant? If you all hate kids so much, don't live in Park Slope. Or get a real job that allows you to have someplace to work.

WC Fields said it best "Anyone who hates kids and dogs can't be that bad".

It's comments like these (and the ones that will follow) that make this forum indispensible reading. -

"and one of you was kind enough to breastfeed on the couch next to me..."
This reflects the general lack of support in our society for breastfeeding... please try to remember a mother and child's right to do so, whenever, whereever.
I doubt the baby thought "how dare that person....he had the nerve to drink coffee on the couch next to me while I was drinking my milk". Give them the same courtesy and respect. -
This whole MILF is really mysoginist. Why should a mother (or any woman) have to get dolled up to stroll a drooling kid to the super market? No wonder we still don't have many women in real positions of power in this country. They have to first be someone that adolescent boys LF.

You must have seen the same video I did. -
Along similar lines of what BabsAnne was saying, it's not a mommies vs. childless issue. It's about having consideration for those around you. I would get just as annoyed at a group of single adults breaking into song next to me as I was trying to relax with a cup of coffee and a good book. I know that children are children, and I don't blame them for wanting to explore their environment, but parents need to keep an eye on them-- make sure they're not touching other people's belongings or disturbing strangers when they're trying to concentrate on something. And isn't this in the child's best interest too? Little roving bodies can get knocked into in public places. I've almost tripped over darting toddlers on several occasions in the Slope and the parents have either been oblivious or unfazed by it. When that happens, I really want to say, "Um, how is it that you don't seem to give a crap that your kid was almost stepped on? Or that I lost my balance dodging him/her? Thankfully, no one was hurt this time, but please be more mindful of what your child is doing in public."
As for the Tea Lounge, I just don't go there anymore unless the weather is nice enough that I can take my beverage outside. It's a shame because I like their space and think their coffee and tea are far superior to Ozzy's. But it's just not the kind of environment that I care to sit and sip tea in due to inconsiderate parents. -

What is misogynist about it? A little crude to be sure but it really is just a shorthand way to say 'an attractive mom' - why is that misogynistic? And who said that a women has to get 'dolled up'? - I generally dont need "dolled up" to figure out if ILF someone (although I admit sometimes it can help)
nor does a Mom have to be pushing a drooling kid to be a MILF, she is still a MILF if she leaves the kid at home.
Lighten up! -

If you told a racist N word joke, would you tell the African American poster to "lighten up"? Probably not--you would probably be embarassed or pissed. I think discussing women in terms of who you want to F&^% is to me, more then crude--it is sexist and I find sexism and misogyny are usually pretty linked.
It is apparent again this past few weeks when a woman makes a move for power she is immediately analyzed and reduced to her physical attributes. It seems very Neanderthal to hear the Fox News type media discuss Clinton and Pelosi in terms of how they present themselves. By perpetuating that crap, it helps insure that the US will remain the industrialized nation with the fewest number of women in real power. -
To refocus: it's not parents Vs child-free. It's the entitlement behind those moms allowing their kids to run rampant that defines them. As assholes. And you have every right to scold a wild kid; obviously his parent isn't. And if she gives you a dirty look, stare her the fuck down.
Let's have a war!! We need slogans!! Names!! Catch phrases!!
We're obsessed with this subject--let's have fun with it.
Next time some kid spills your shit, you should say "_________________

OK, let's back up a minute here:
Clearly, the intent of a racist joke featuring the "N" word is not to compliment in any way shape or form a black/African-American person; the whole MILF thing--as crude, crass and Neanderthal-like as it may be--is, in its intent, rooted in the exact opposite: flattery. Misguided, inappropriate, condescending? Perhaps. But to call a black/African-American person a n***** and to refer to an attractive woman as a MILF is SO not the same thing. (As a person of color myself, I can tell you that I'm sure many would bristle at the comparison.) That's where I presume the call to 'lighten up' comes from.
Btw, to use the Fox Noise Channel's blatant, negatively-biased depictions of two powerful women they ideologically despise as the basis for an argument decrying the perpetuation of stereotypes against women, is like rating the obnoxiousness of Yankee fans based on interviews with their Boston counterparts. In other words, your argument may be valid--and indeed, it is--but the example needs to be tweaked. -

With all due respect Clinton and Pelosi are no MILF's. Although Hillary does have a nice rack. -

Have to disagree. While I won't presume to know what being called a N****** feels like. I can tell you as a woman (my friends feel the same way) being "rated" by appearance or reduced to whether some stranger wants to f*** me or not is demoralizing and takes away your feeling of power. What does the N word make you feel like? Some men think that we woman like to be bothered when we pass construction sites. Most of the woman I know don't find that attention flattery, it makes us feel angry most of the time. It is intrusive. It is more then condescending--it is objectifying which is what I think the N word would be like. Although I know those guys were joking around and weren't making some big sociological statement with their MILF, I thought I would point out that for some mothers, we don't think it is that funny. I hope my sons don't think they can rate women on whether they are F&^%-able or not. I hope they have more respect and also aren't so presumptuous to think that the feeling could be mutual.
Howdy, Stranger!
